How to Turn a Raspberry Pi into a Whole-Home Intercom

A Raspberry Pi intercom uses a Mumble server and a client in each room. Understand the audio and network requirements before building it.

You can build a Raspberry Pi whole-home intercom by placing a Pi and a suitable speaker-and-microphone endpoint in each room, then connecting each endpoint to a Mumble server with the rpi-intercom Python client. It is a configurable maker project, not a plug-and-play appliance: echo cancellation and a stable network connection are essential design considerations.

How the Raspberry Pi intercom architecture works

The rpi-intercom README describes the software as “A mumble client written in python that makes a raspberry pi run as an ‘intercom’.” Each room endpoint connects to a Mumble server; phones and computers can also connect using Mumble, so a room-to-room system does not have to consist exclusively of Raspberry Pis.

For a two-room setup, the project’s example uses two Raspberry Pis and two speaker/microphone endpoints. The Mumble server can run on a home server for a local-hosting design, as the project author describes, or be hosted on the internet. Local hosting is a privacy-oriented option, not a guarantee of security: protect the server and its accounts, and consider who can reach it on your network.

What you need in each room

  • A Raspberry Pi running an operating system and Python environment compatible with the client.
  • A microphone and speaker arrangement that suits the room and, critically, handles echo cancellation in the audio path.
  • A reliable connection between the Pi and the Mumble server. Wired Ethernet is a sensible choice where practical; Wi-Fi may work, but the project does not establish that every wireless network will provide a stable enough connection.
  • Optionally, GPIO-connected controls or status indicators. The project documents GPIO inputs for mute, deafen, transmit, and connected status.

Choose the audio endpoint based on how it will be used: built-in or external microphone, mono or stereo playback, and whether its output is line-level or already amplified for speakers. Also account for how many rooms you want, where the server will live, and whether you want physical buttons or software controls.

Plan for echo before choosing audio hardware

Echo is not a minor polish issue. When a room’s speaker plays incoming speech, its microphone can pick up that sound and send it back to the other endpoint. The project explicitly says its client does not perform software echo cancellation: “Handle echo cancellation. This means that the audio played on a speaker "echos" back to the recipient unless the hardware you’re using removes it.” In practical terms, select a speaker/microphone device or audio arrangement that removes speaker audio from the transmitted microphone signal; do not assume the Pi itself or an audio HAT will do this.

Audio options documented by Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi’s current Audio HAT documentation lists boards with different input and output roles. These are specifications, not confirmation that a board has echo cancellation or is a tested turnkey intercom solution.

Board Documented audio role Intercom consideration
Codec Zero Up to 96 kHz; built-in microphone, external microphone input, and mono speaker output. A compact I/O candidate, but the published specification does not establish echo cancellation.
DAC Pro Playback up to 192 kHz; line-level or headphone output. Plan for suitable amplification and a separate microphone arrangement; echo cancellation is not established by the specification.
DAC+ Playback up to 192 kHz; line-level or headphone output. Plan for suitable amplification and a separate microphone arrangement; echo cancellation is not established by the specification.
DigiAMP+ Playback up to 192 kHz; terminals for two passive stereo speakers. Provides amplified speaker output, but the specification does not establish microphone input or echo cancellation.

Raspberry Pi’s general setup documentation also says audio output is available over HDMI, USB, or Bluetooth across Pi models. A 3.5 mm auxiliary jack is present on Pi 1 through Pi 4 and supplies line-level output rather than amplified speaker-level output, so a speaker connected there may need an amplifier to reach useful volume.

Install and launch the rpi-intercom client

The project README’s quick-start path is to obtain or install a Mumble server, install the client library, and launch it with the server address. Use the server address that resolves from the Pi; the example below uses a local hostname.

  1. Set up a Mumble server. Choose a host reachable from each room endpoint, then note its address.
  2. Install the Python package on the Raspberry Pi: sudo python -m pip install rpi_intercom. Confirm that the chosen Pi operating system and Python environment support the project before building multiple room endpoints around it.
  3. Start the client with the server address: python -m rpi_intercom --server my-mumble-server.local. Replace my-mumble-server.local with your server’s actual hostname or address.

The README identifies the server address as the only mandatory setting, but its defaults transmit and listen constantly. Do not mistake this for push-to-talk behavior. Decide deliberately whether an always-open room microphone is acceptable, and configure the client’s behavior and controls to match your privacy and household needs. GPIO inputs can be configured for mute, deafen, transmit, and connected status.

Make an endpoint start automatically

For an always-on room unit, the README documents installing a systemd service so the client starts at boot and is restarted automatically if it stops. Follow the service-installation command and options in the project README for the version you install. Before relying on automatic startup, verify that the configured server address, audio devices, and intended transmit/listen behavior are correct after a reboot.

Keep the audio and network path reliable

The project says the client lacks anti-jitter audio processing and calls for stable connectivity between each endpoint and the Mumble server. Wired Ethernet is a practical installation preference where available, not a requirement stated by rpi-intercom. If using Wi-Fi, check that the endpoint’s actual room has dependable coverage rather than assuming performance from a router’s location or signal elsewhere in the house.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio setup is also part of the build, not an automatic consequence of installing the Python package. Select and configure the Pi’s input and output devices, confirm that playback reaches the intended speaker, and confirm that the microphone captures speech without returning the local speaker audio to other rooms. The cited project documentation does not provide latency targets, reliability rates, or a universal hardware recipe.

Where Home Assistant fits—and where it does not

Home Assistant is optional and separate from the documented intercom architecture. Its Raspberry Pi installation guide recommends Home Assistant OS for most Home Assistant installations and describes hardware such as a Pi 4 or Pi 5 with at least 2 GB RAM, a microSD card of at least 32 GB, a power supply, and Ethernet for initial installation. That guide does not describe an intercom feature or the rpi-intercom client; it should not be treated as an installation guide for this project.

What to check before expanding to every room

  • Test one room endpoint against the intended Mumble server before duplicating the build.
  • Confirm the chosen audio equipment provides the required microphone and speaker connections, amplification where needed, and echo cancellation in the complete audio path.
  • Decide whether constant transmitting and listening suit the room, and provide deliberate mute or transmit controls if needed.
  • Check the connection where each endpoint will actually be installed and plan for ongoing operating-system, Python, audio-device, and client maintenance.
