Use the format required by the specific speech API endpoint. Send multipart/form-data when an endpoint accepts an audio file as a form part, as OpenAI’s transcription endpoint does. Use Base64 in JSON when the endpoint’s REST schema requires inline audio content, as Google Cloud Speech-to-Text does. For gRPC, stored audio, or live transcription, follow those workflows instead; multipart and Base64 JSON are not universal alternatives.
How the two request formats differ
Multipart upload
A multipart/form-data request can carry ordinary fields—such as a model name—and a file part containing the audio. The audio remains a file payload rather than being converted into text. OpenAI’s speech-to-text guide shows this approach for file transcription.

Base64 inside JSON
Base64 represents binary bytes as text so they can fit in a JSON string field. Google explains that JSON does not directly support binary data, so its REST Speech-to-Text inline content field uses Base64 encoding in its Base64 encoding guide. This is a requirement of that request path, not a rule that all speech APIs use.

Multipart avoids Base64 conversion when the endpoint accepts the original file, but it still has multipart framing. Base64 adds an encoding step and makes the representation larger than the raw bytes. Those facts alone do not establish a universal speed, cost, or memory winner: client implementation, payload size, network path, and server behavior all matter. The cited provider documentation does not publish a controlled head-to-head benchmark.

Provider-specific limits and options
OpenAI file transcription
OpenAI’s current file transcription guide documents multipart/form-data with a file and model field. It lists a 25 MB file limit and supports MP3, MP4, MPEG, MPGA, M4A, WAV, and WebM. For files above the limit, the guide suggests compression or splitting into chunks of 25 MB or less, and warns against splitting mid-sentence because doing so can remove context and reduce accuracy. These limits and formats apply to the documented endpoint; check the guide when implementing because provider requirements can change.
Use a maintained client library or a correctly configured multipart implementation. Let the HTTP library generate the multipart boundary; manually declaring a boundary that does not match the body can make the request invalid. Where supported, pass file input as a stream rather than loading a large recording fully into memory.

Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
Google offers multiple ways to provide audio: Base64 in inline REST JSON, binary audio over gRPC, a Cloud Storage URI for stored audio, and separate streaming or batch workflows. For a storage reference, configure access so the service can read the specific object.

Google’s current Speech-to-Text quotas page says streaming requests accept inline audio only and are limited to 25 KB of audio per request; a stream can remain open for up to five minutes, with audio sent at approximately real-time speed. For batch recognition, the page specifies Cloud Storage URI input, up to five files per request, recommends one file per request to receive a separate operation ID, and allows each file to be up to eight hours. These are Google quota figures, not general limits for speech APIs, and Google notes that limits can change. Check the quota for the endpoint and region you use.

Amazon Transcribe streaming
Amazon Transcribe’s StartStreamTranscription API uses a bidirectional HTTP/2 or WebSocket stream, returning results as the application sends audio. Its AudioEvent reference sets a maximum audio chunk duration of one second. That is a streaming-specific requirement, not a recommendation to Base64-encode completed audio files.
Implementation checklist
- Identify the exact API: confirm provider, endpoint, API version, region, and whether the task is file transcription, batch processing, or live streaming.
- Read the request contract: verify accepted field names, media types, and transport. Do not assume one provider uses the same audio representation for REST, gRPC, batch, and streaming.
- Check current limits: confirm file size, duration, format, per-message limits, and quotas for that endpoint. Limits may change.
- For multipart: send audio as a file part and options as ordinary fields. Prefer a maintained client library and allow it to construct the boundary.
- For Base64 JSON: encode directly from the bytes, avoid line wrapping or text corruption, and account for the larger encoded representation and any extra memory used by your client.
- For a storage URI: grant the speech service only the access it needs to read the relevant object.
- For long recordings: use the documented batch or storage workflow when appropriate. If splitting is required, choose sensible boundaries; splitting mid-sentence can remove context.
- For live audio: follow the streaming API’s chunk size and pacing rules rather than packaging an entire session as one JSON upload.
- Benchmark only valid requests: with representative audio and identical endpoint and model settings, measure encoding time, client memory, upload duration, server latency, and failure rate separately.
What to compare beyond encoding
- Endpoint compatibility: whether the API accepts the chosen representation at all.
- Audio constraints: file format, size, duration, and any streaming message or chunk limit.
- Client support: whether your HTTP, gRPC, or streaming library can send the required payload without unnecessary buffering.
- Where audio lives: a local recording may suit file upload; an object already in cloud storage may fit a storage-URI workflow.
- Interaction mode: a completed recording, asynchronous batch job, and real-time stream are different request patterns.
- Security and access: consider how uploads are protected and whether a service can access a referenced storage object.
There is no source-established universal performance ranking for multipart versus Base64 JSON. If performance matters, measure both only where the target endpoint genuinely supports both, keeping the request, audio, client, and network conditions comparable.
