Start with the game’s render resolution or resolution scale and its upscaler setting; those most directly determine the upscaling tradeoff. Then choose a frame-rate target your phone can sustain and, where possible, match the display refresh rate to it. Keep other demanding graphics options only as high as the phone can maintain without heat-related slowdowns. There is no universal best preset: settings, upscaler support, chipset performance and thermal behavior vary by game and handset.
Which settings should you adjust first?
- Find the game’s render-resolution and upscaler controls. Look for labels such as render resolution, resolution scale, or upscaling. Check whether the option is actually supported by that game and phone; “AI upscaling” is not a universal phone-level switch.
- Choose image quality, then lower render resolution only as far as you accept. Upscaling renders the game at one resolution and reconstructs or scales the image toward a higher output. A lower internal resolution can reduce GPU work, but the result depends on the specific upscaler and its game implementation. Inspect fine edges and moving objects rather than assuming the output will retain native-resolution detail.
- Set a sustainable frame-rate target. A high FPS number is not helpful if performance repeatedly falls below it. Test during representative gameplay for several minutes, rather than relying on a static menu or a short burst.
- Match display refresh to sustained FPS if your phone allows it. Android’s guidance explains that a display refresh rate higher than the game’s target may use extra display power without benefiting the game in that situation. Modern-device examples include 60 Hz, 90 Hz and 120 Hz; these are examples, not a recommendation to run every game at 120 FPS. See Android’s game power-efficiency guidance.
- Reassess effects and FPS if performance degrades. If the target is unstable or the phone heats up, lower demanding visual-quality options available in that game, or reduce the FPS target, then compare again. There is no well-supported universal ranking of shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing and textures across phone games.
- Use manufacturer game controls only when available for your model. These may expose per-game resolution, FPS or optimization options, but labels and availability vary by software version and region.
How to compare two upscaling settings
Use the same game scene and play conditions for each setting. Judge the tradeoff across four factors rather than treating a single FPS reading as the answer:

- Image: Look at sharpness, edge stability and artifacts, particularly on fine details and moving objects.
- Frame delivery: Check whether the phone sustains the target and whether motion feels consistent, not just whether a counter briefly reaches it.
- Heat and battery: Notice changes over a representative session. Android notes that high CPU/GPU utilization generates heat; thermal throttling can reduce processor speeds and affect game performance and battery drain.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the game, phone model and software expose the named upscaler and controls. A technology announcement alone does not establish support on a particular handset or in a particular game.
What “AI upscaling” means on phones
The label covers different implementations, and not every upscaler is AI-based. Qualcomm’s 2023 description calls Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) a single-pass spatial upscaler optimized for Adreno GPUs, combining upscaling and sharpening. Qualcomm’s game-studio materials also describe rendering the 3D scene at a lower resolution while drawing 2D interface elements at device resolution. That means the game scene and its UI need not share the same rendering resolution. These are Qualcomm’s descriptions, not independent comparative tests. Qualcomm describes GSR2, in an October 2024 developer article, as temporal anti-aliasing and upscaling that uses color samples from earlier rendered frames. The company reports an example timing under 2 ms, including a 1 ms fragment-shader variant, for a specified scaling scenario on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 at maximum GPU frequency. In September 2026, Qualcomm announced Adreno Neural Fusion, describing a unified mobile rendering pipeline for neural processing, AI super resolution and frame generation, with Unity and Unreal Engine support. This is a vendor announcement, not evidence that every compatible-sounding phone or game offers a user-facing toggle. Compatibility depends on platform and game-engine integration. Where to find phone-level game settings
Some manufacturers add per-game controls beyond the game’s own menu. Samsung documents Game Booster options that can include optimization level, FPS, screen resolution and frame booster settings. Treat these as examples for supported Galaxy devices, not instructions guaranteed to match every model, software version or region; check the exact device and current menu labels. Changing a device-level resolution or frame-booster option is not the same as enabling an in-game AI upscaler. Confirm which control you changed and whether the game reports or visibly uses the feature.
