To fix a blurry Halide photo, first determine whether focus missed or the phone or subject moved; use manual focus only for the first problem. For dark or overexposed shots, check Halide’s histogram and adjust exposure before capture. In low light, a longer shutter gathers more light but increases motion risk, while higher ISO can brighten the image at the cost of noise. RAW editing may recover some tonal detail, but not information the camera did not capture.
Fix blur by identifying its cause
Blur generally comes from incorrect focus or movement during the exposure. The fixes are different: manual focus can correct the distance the camera focused on, but it cannot undo movement captured while the shutter was open.

When the camera focused at the wrong distance
Halide defaults to autofocus. If the intended subject is soft while another distance appears sharper, switch to manual focus, adjust the focus dial, and inspect the subject with the focus loupe or focus peaking on sharp edges. Halide documents these focus controls in its camera manual. Interface details can vary by app version.

If a stationary object looks smeared across the frame, or a moving subject is soft despite being in focus, movement during capture is a more likely cause. Use a faster shutter speed if manual controls are available, or steady the phone. For a static scene in dim light, a tripod is a practical way to reduce camera movement; it will not freeze a moving subject.

Use the histogram to diagnose exposure
In Halide’s viewfinder, open the quickbar and tap the bar-graph control to show the histogram. Its left side represents shadows and its right side represents highlights. A strong pileup at the left can indicate very dark tones with lost shadow detail; a pileup at the right can indicate highlights losing detail. Halide’s guide advises avoiding tall bars at either side, but a histogram does not need to be evenly distributed in every scene.
Adjust exposure with the documented up-and-down gesture while watching the histogram. Halide’s product page also documents left-and-right swiping for focus and manual control of shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. If those gestures or controls differ in your version, use the current on-screen controls instead.

Choose low-light settings for the scene
In manual mode, shutter speed and ISO involve different trade-offs. A longer exposure collects more light, but makes capture less responsive and gives movement more time to cause blur. A higher ISO needs less light for an exposure but introduces more noise; a lower ISO reduces noise but requires more light. There is no setting that is best for every scene: subject movement, available light, noise tolerance, and the controls supported by your device and app all matter.

Pick a processing option that fits the light
Halide describes three processing choices: Process Zero, Apple Processing, and ProRAW. They affect the look and editing options of a capture; none is a universal fix for poor exposure.

Recover exposure from a supported RAW capture
If you already took a supported Process Zero RAW photo, Halide’s Image Lab can adjust exposure after capture. Open the last photo or library, select the image, and tap the +/- control. Halide recommends beginning with exposure, then adjusting white balance, reducing highlights, and raising shadows. These changes can reveal detail retained in the RAW data, but recovery depends on what the sensor captured and how severely the tones were clipped.

Quick troubleshooting order
- For blur: check whether the wrong distance is sharp. If so, use the focus loupe or peaking and adjust manual focus. If the image looks smeared, address movement with a faster shutter or steadier support.
- For a dark or washed-out preview: show the histogram, identify whether shadows or highlights are bunching at an edge, and adjust exposure before capture.
- For a low-light scene: decide whether the subject is still. A longer shutter can gather light for a static scene; for movement, favor a faster shutter and accept the ISO-related noise trade-off where necessary.
- For future editing: choose the processing and RAW option for your goal, and verify that your current iPhone and Halide version support it.
- For a photo already taken: use Image Lab on a supported Process Zero RAW capture and adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, and shadows. If detail was never recorded, editing cannot recreate it reliably.
