For travel and commuting, prioritize noise cancellation that suits your route, comfort over your longest listening stretch, battery life with ANC switched on, and a fit-for-purpose way to hear announcements or use in-flight entertainment. Then check how the headphones pack, connect to your devices, and charge. No single model is best for every traveler: comfort, aircraft connections, and the noise you encounter can matter as much as headline specifications.

Start with the noise you need to manage

Active noise cancellation (ANC) is most useful against steady, low-frequency sounds such as aircraft and bus engines. It can reduce that rumble, but do not expect it to erase every voice, announcement, or sudden sound. Passive isolation helps too, but RTINGS notes that it typically does less against lower-frequency noise than ANC. See Sony’s headphone buying guide and RTINGS’ travel headphone guide.

If you need to hear station announcements, traffic, or a travel companion, look for an ambient-sound or transparency mode. Learn its control before you reach a busy platform or boarding area; fumbling through app menus while wearing headphones is less useful than knowing how to switch modes directly.

Judge comfort over a real listening session

Over-ear headphones can be a good choice for long listening, but comfort is personal. Earcup depth and size, clamping force, weight, glasses, and heat all affect how a pair feels after an hour or more. Sony’s guidance puts comfort among the most important factors for people who listen for several hours at a time. If fit is uncertain, try the headphones on or choose a seller with a return policy that gives you a fair chance to assess them during ordinary use.

Compare battery life with ANC enabled

Use the longest stretch between charging opportunities on your usual trips as your benchmark. Compare manufacturers’ or reviewers’ figures under conditions close to yours, especially with ANC on if that is how you will travel. Volume and enabled features can affect runtime, so a published figure is not a guarantee for every listener.

For one specific reference point, RTINGS reports close to 32 hours for the Sony WH-1000XM6 with ANC enabled in its testing. SoundGuys reports just under 56 hours for the JBL Tour ONE M3 in its test conditions, using real music peaking at 75 dB SPL. These are results from those publications’ tests, not directly comparable promises or universal minimums. Check the test details and the current model specifications before deciding.

  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Check how the headphones pack

Look beyond whether the earcups fold. Check whether the headphones fold or lie flat, the size and shape of the case, and whether the case can hold the cable you may need. A compact folded design is not helpful if its case takes up too much room in your bag. Carrying convenience is a trade-off to compare alongside sound and comfort; there is no universally best folding design for every traveler.

Bluetooth switching and calls

If you move between a phone and laptop, multipoint can keep compatible headphones connected to two Bluetooth devices. Support and behavior vary by model, so verify the exact product and its compatibility with your devices rather than assuming every pair offers it. For calls, consider how you will use the headphones in noisy surroundings and whether the controls are practical while walking or carrying luggage.

Wired audio on a flight

Aircraft seat connections and headphone inputs differ, so check both before packing a cable or adapter. SoundGuys says the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) accept USB-C digital or 3.5 mm analog audio. Its flight guide says the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless package includes an airplane adapter for its detachable 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm cable. Those are model-specific details: do not assume a cable, adapter, or aircraft socket will work with every combination. See SoundGuys’ guide to headphones for flying.

Compare current travel-friendly examples

These models illustrate different trade-offs identified by the cited comparison guides; they are examples, not an exhaustive shortlist or a permanent ranking. The guides do not establish a comparable current price for every model, so check live listings and manufacturer specifications before buying.

Sony WH-1000XM6 RTINGS names it its best travel headphone in the guide accessed in 2026 and reports close to 32 hours with ANC enabled in its testing. Try the fit and confirm current generation and listing details.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) SoundGuys presents it as a travel pick, highlighting ANC, comfort, and its travel case. The flight guide describes USB-C digital and 3.5 mm analog wired audio; confirm which connection suits your seat and cable.
JBL Tour ONE M3 SoundGuys calls it a battery-life runner-up in its travel comparison and reports just under 56 hours in its test conditions. The guide also describes a Smart TX accessory. SoundGuys identifies comfort as a trade-off; assess fit and check what accessories are included in the listing you are considering.
Anker Soundcore Space Q45 Wireless RTINGS includes it as a lower-mid-range travel option and discusses battery and build trade-offs. Compare those trade-offs with your priorities and check current specifications.
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless SoundGuys’ flight guide cites its detachable cable and included airplane adapter as travel-relevant. The guide cautions that its ANC is not class-leading; confirm the adapter and cable arrangement fits your aircraft setup.

RTINGS says it has tested over 895 headphone pairs, but that total does not make a ranking permanent: models, firmware, availability, and comparison results can change. TechRadar’s dated change log also shows recommendations being updated as reviews change. Treat any “best” label as a guide to investigate, not a substitute for checking fit and current details. Pack accessories only when they solve a real problem

  • Airplane adapter and cable: Bring one only after checking the aircraft connector and your headphones’ wired input. A 3.5 mm cable or dual-plug airplane adapter is not a universal match.
  • USB-C power bank: It can serve as a charging backup, but it does not compensate for headphones whose runtime is too short for your needs. Check the airline’s battery-capacity rules before flying; those rules can vary.

For a broad product search, “over-ear noise-cancelling headphones for travel” describes the category. Compare the exact model and package rather than assuming similarly named versions include the same cable, adapter, or other accessory.
