Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore your first round, check the course and tee, scoring, units, and any distance-adjustment features on your Garmin golf watch. The exact menus vary by model, so use your watch’s manual for button-by-button instructions rather than assuming one Garmin setup path applies to every device.
Before you leave: prepare the watch and course
- Charge the watch and install Garmin Golf if your model requires it. Garmin’s Venu 3 manual instructs first-time golfers to download the Garmin Golf app and charge the watch before playing. These are Venu 3 instructions, not universal steps for every model. Garmin Venu 3 series Owner’s Manual: Playing Golf.
- Sync or update course data using your model’s documented method. Workflows differ: the Venu 3 manual says its courses update automatically, while the Approach G82 manual describes a Course Manager and downloadable course maps. Check the relevant Garmin Golf Settings information and your watch’s manual.
- Start Golf and allow the watch to locate satellites. Confirm the selected course before beginning. If you are playing a specific hole rather than starting at the first, Garmin says rounds can be started on any hole; follow the model’s instructions for choosing it. Garmin: Starting a Round of Golf on Any Hole.
Choose the right course and tee
When the watch prompts you, select the course you are actually playing and then the intended tee box. On the Venu 3, the watch may select a nearby course when only one is available; otherwise, choose from the list and select a tee. Check the displayed course, hole, and tee before relying on the yardages. The exact screens differ across models, so consult the device-specific manual rather than looking for a universal menu path.

Set up scoring for the round you are playing
Check that scoring is enabled and that the scoring format matches your game. Garmin’s general golf-settings guidance covers stroke play and Stableford on supported devices; the Approach G82 manual also documents scoring prompts and handicap scoring. Options are model-dependent, so follow the settings available on your watch. Approach G82 Owner’s Manual: Settings.

Do not assume the watch automatically captures every stroke. Garmin says scoring may default to par and can require you to adjust the score manually after each hole. Review the scorecard as you play so an incorrect hole score does not carry through the round. Garmin: AutoShot and Other Features on Garmin Golf Devices.
#1 Best Overall
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
Decide whether to track statistics
Turn on Stat Tracking if you want to record supported details such as putts, greens in regulation, fairways hit, or penalty strokes. It can make later round comparisons in Garmin Golf more useful, but it also adds prompts and data entry. If you want the simplest first-round experience, start with accurate scoring and add statistics when you are comfortable with the watch’s interaction.
Club tracking is optional. Compatible Garmin Approach CT10 sensors can support club setup and club statistics on compatible watches, but the cited Garmin materials do not establish compatibility with every golf watch. Check your exact model before buying Garmin Approach CT10 club sensors.

Use familiar units and understand adjusted distances
Set distances to yards or meters according to what you normally use, if your model offers that setting. If you enable PlaysLike or another adjusted-distance feature, understand what it factors in before treating the result as a standard yardage. For example, the G82 manual describes PlaysLike settings involving wind, weather or air density, and home conditions; those details should not be assumed to apply to other Garmin models.
Some features may be restricted in formal play. Garmin says Tournament Mode disables certain features, with the exact set depending on the device; the G82 manual lists additional disabled features for that model. Before a sanctioned event or a round used for handicap calculation, check the event rules and your model’s documentation. Approach G82 Owner’s Manual: Settings.

What to leave for later
You do not need optional sensors, Virtual Caddie, or premium green data to get basic yardages and keep score. Garmin says Virtual Caddie becomes available after five rounds, club tracking, and scorecard uploads to Garmin Golf. Garmin’s app information also describes premium green contour data, and the G82 manual says its GreenZoom feature requires a Garmin Golf app subscription; availability and requirements are model-dependent. First verify that the watch has the right course and hole selected, then check whether the course map is current using the update method for your model. Garmin notes that course remodeling and outdated database information can contribute to inaccurate yardages. GPS displays should not be treated as a guarantee of exact distance.
