Before installing a Galaxy software update, make a fresh backup and confirm that it finishes. Samsung offers several routes—not one universal backup—including Samsung Cloud, Google Drive, Smart Switch, and OneDrive synchronization. What each route can save depends on your model, software version, country, and carrier, and an update does not necessarily erase personal data.
Choose a backup method that fits your data
Use the phone’s available backup categories as your guide: no method should be assumed to capture every item. Samsung Cloud and Google Drive offer cloud backup flows; Smart Switch can create a local backup on a PC or SD card, or transfer data between devices. OneDrive is a synchronization option for supported files, not a complete device-restore backup.

| Method | Useful for | Important limitation | Restore path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Cloud | Supported Galaxy settings and device data | Coverage varies by model, operating system, country, and carrier. Samsung Canada says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through Samsung Cloud. | Restore data from Settings |
| Google Drive backup | Device backup associated with a Google Account | Uses Google Account storage. Samsung Singapore states that backup data is deleted after 57 consecutive days of device non-use, excluding Google Photos items. A backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older one. | During initial device setup |
| Smart Switch to PC or SD card | A local copy or a device-transfer workflow | Requires a suitable computer or SD card and compatible connection. Transfer coverage is subject to device and operating-system restrictions. | In Smart Switch, select the saved backup and follow the prompts |
| OneDrive synchronization | Supported files already synchronized with OneDrive | Synchronization is not a complete device backup or full-device restore. | Use OneDrive to access synchronized files |
Prepare the phone before backing it up
- Connect to Wi-Fi where practical. Samsung recommends Wi-Fi for Samsung Cloud backup and restore; mobile-data charges may apply.
- Make sure the phone has enough battery for the backup and update steps.
- Know the Samsung Account and Google Account credentials used on the phone, since they may be needed to access backups or restore data.
- Check that the destination has room: Google Drive backup uses Google Account storage.
- If a menu path below does not match your screen, search Settings for “Accounts and backup,” “Samsung Cloud,” or “Google Drive.” Labels and availability vary by model and software version.
Back up to Samsung Cloud
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data.
- Select the categories available on your phone.
- Tap Back up now and wait for the operation to finish, then tap Done.
Samsung’s Canada guide lists categories that can include call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendars, clock items, settings, home-screen layout, apps and settings, and voice recordings. The actual list varies, and some large message files may not be backed up. Samsung says an individual file larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through Samsung Cloud in that guide.

Samsung Cloud device backup is not the same as synchronization. Samsung says contacts and calendars set up with a Google Account will not synchronize through Samsung Cloud. Check the categories shown on your own device rather than assuming an item is protected.

Samsung also offers automatic backup as a separate option. Its guide says the device must be charging, its screen must be off, and it must be connected to Wi-Fi. For an update happening soon, use Back up now so you can confirm a current backup completed.
Back up to Google Drive
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Drive > Back up data. This is the path in Samsung’s Singapore guide; labels may differ on other devices.
- Review the available categories and tap Back up now.
- Wait for the backup to complete and verify its status on the backup screen.
Categories can include apps, photos and videos, SMS and MMS messages, call history, device settings, and Google Account data. The precise categories depend on the device and software version. The backup uses Google Account storage, so available space can affect whether it succeeds.

Samsung says automatic Google Drive backup occurs over Wi-Fi when the phone is connected to a charger and unused for at least two hours. Samsung also says Google Drive backup data is automatically deleted after 57 consecutive days of device non-use; this condition excludes data backed up to Google Photos. An older automatic backup may therefore be stale or unavailable, so make a manual backup before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake a local backup or transfer with Smart Switch
Smart Switch can back up phone data to a PC or SD card and restore that backup to a phone. Samsung’s computer workflow uses Smart Switch software and a USB connection. Direct device-to-device transfer is also available through wired or wireless routes. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable is one documented wired option; use a compatible cable you already have if available. A cable is not needed for cloud backups.

Depending on the device, possible transfers from Android include contacts, schedule, messages, photos, videos, music, call log, documents, and settings. Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfer may also include selected app data and home layout. Restrictions depend on the device manufacturer and operating system, and DRM-protected content cannot be transferred.
- Keep the phone sufficiently charged; Samsung warns that low battery can interrupt a transfer.
- Do not disconnect a USB cable during file transfer. Samsung warns this can cause data loss or device damage.
- Check that the PC or SD card contains the completed backup before starting the update.
Restore data if you need it
Restore from Samsung Cloud
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > Restore data.
- Choose the source phone backup and the data categories to restore.
- Tap Restore, wait for it to complete, then tap Done.
The categories available for restoration still depend on the device and software version.

Restore a Google Drive backup during setup
Samsung describes Google Drive restore as part of the initial device setup flow. At Copy apps & data, continue through setup, choose the option for not using another device, select the backup, choose the items, and restore. Samsung warns that a backup created on a newer Android version cannot be restored to an older Android version. This is a version-direction limitation, not a claim that every newer backup is incompatible with every other device.
Restore a Smart Switch backup
In Smart Switch, select the backup stored on your PC or SD card and follow the on-screen restore flow. Exact screens can depend on the device and software version.

Confirm the backup before installing the update
- Confirm that the manual backup reports completion; do not begin the update while it is still running or failed.
- For cloud backups, check the account and backup status shown on the phone. For Smart Switch, confirm the PC or SD-card backup is present.
- Check that the categories you care about were included. A completed backup does not mean every kind of data was saved.
- Proceed with the update only after you have a usable backup and can access the account credentials needed for restoration.
