First compare the watch with the same target: Garmin golf watches show distance to the center of the green by default, not necessarily to the day’s pin. Then check yards-versus-meters settings, satellite reception, updates, and whether the problem is limited to a particular course or hole.
1. Compare the same target
Before changing settings, make sure you are comparing like with like. Garmin says course markers generally show distance to the center of the green, and the watch reports center-of-green distance by default. A pin can be 20 to 30 yards from the center on some shots, so a reading that differs from a marker or the flag may not indicate a GPS fault. Garmin’s golf-distance guidance explains the distinction.

If you have manually moved the pin location on the watch, compare its reading with that selected pin rather than the green center. Garmin considers a discrepancy of 5 yards or less acceptable for consumer GPS; this is Garmin’s support guidance, not an independent accuracy test.

2. Check the distance units
If readings are consistently wrong across the round, check whether the watch is set to meters while you expect yards, or vice versa. Garmin identifies an incorrect meters/yards setting as its most common listed cause of consistently inaccurate golf distances. The menu names and location vary by model.
#1 Best Overall
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
- Start the Golf activity.
- Wait for GPS to be acquired.
- Open Settings or Golf Settings.
- Choose Golf Distance or Distance Units, then select yards or meters.
If the menu labels differ, consult the owner’s manual or support page for your exact Approach model rather than assuming every Garmin watch uses the same path.
3. Improve the satellite fix
A watch needs a clear view of the sky to acquire GPS reliably. Start the activity outdoors and wait for the GPS-ready indication before relying on distances. Move away from buildings, covered areas, and dense foliage if acquisition is slow or readings appear unstable.

- Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
- Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation

Garmin also recommends keeping the software current and syncing the watch with Garmin Express or Garmin Golf to refresh predictive-orbit data, which helps the device locate satellites. If it still will not acquire satellites, restart it and try again. See Garmin’s satellite troubleshooting steps for the model-specific guidance.

Outdated software or course data can contribute to inaccurate readings. Garmin says Approach devices can update software and maps using Garmin Express, connected with the supplied USB charging cable. Depending on the model, software updates may also be available through Garmin Golf, and CourseView maps may be updated over Wi-Fi through Map Manager. The available options are device-specific; Garmin’s update guidance describes the routes.

For example, Garmin’s Approach S50 support page lists software version 9.15, dated August 2026, with fixes for a possible large-distance display issue involving hazards and layups and for custom targets saved far from the hole. That note applies to the S50; check the support page for your own model before assuming an update addresses your symptoms. Approach S50 software information.
5. Check for a course or pin-placement issue
If the problem occurs only on one course or a few holes while other readings look reasonable, the cause may be course data or pin placement rather than the watch’s GPS. Course renovations and database updates can leave localized distances inaccurate. Confirm the target and any manually selected pin first; then submit the issue using Garmin’s Golf Course Report Form.

Garmin says CourseView maps cover more than 43,000 golf courses worldwide, but coverage and what a particular device can store vary. A large map catalogue does not guarantee that every course detail is current.

If settings, reception, syncing, and updates do not help, a reset may be an option. Garmin describes reset as a last resort because it restores factory settings and deletes user data. Sync the watch first, then follow the instructions for your exact model in its owner’s manual. Garmin’s satellite troubleshooting guidance covers reset after simpler steps fail.
