The best free Gantt chart software depends on whether you need a schedule that changes with your project or just a timeline graphic. For a free desktop scheduler that works offline, GanttProject is the clearest fit. ProjectLibre is worth considering for traditional desktop planning. ClickUp combines task management with a Gantt view, but its free Gantt access is limited. Other options in this comparison are trials, add-ons, presentation tools or spreadsheet templates—not equivalent free project schedulers.

Start with the job you need the chart to do. A living schedule should let you connect tasks and show how a change affects later work. A static timeline is enough when you only need a visual for a presentation or one-off plan.

GanttProject: best for offline, no-account planning
GanttProject is a free, local-first, open-source desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux. It works offline and requires no subscription or signup. Its feature set includes task hierarchies, dependencies, constraints, automatic scheduling, milestones, baselines, resource assignment and load charts, cost calculations, PERT generation, and PDF, HTML, PNG and CSV exports. It also supports Microsoft Project file interoperability. The vendor’s product page describes it as a “free, local-first, open-source project management app with Gantt chart for Windows, macOS and Linux.” See GanttProject’s product documentation for current details and releases.
This is a strong choice for an individual planner, student or team that can exchange project files rather than edit the same schedule live in a browser. It is not designed around live, browser-based multi-user editing.

ProjectLibre: best for traditional desktop scheduling
The July 2026 comparison describes ProjectLibre’s desktop product as free and lists Gantt scheduling, dependencies, critical path, resource planning and baselines. The vendor presents ProjectLibre Cloud separately, with collaboration, portfolio management, resource pools and AI features. Do not assume cloud capabilities are part of the desktop application; check the ProjectLibre product page to distinguish the offerings.

ClickUp’s official pricing page lists its Free Forever plan with unlimited tasks, five spaces and 60 MB of storage. The comparison and TeamGantt’s buyer guide say free Gantt use is limited; the buyer guide gives a quota of 60 uses, a dated secondary-source detail that may change. The official pricing page confirms the free plan and task allowance, but not that exact Gantt quota. Check the current ClickUp pricing page and plan flow if the chart limit matters.

TeamGantt: check the free-tier limit before committing
TeamGantt’s published figures do not agree. The July 2026 comparison and the vendor’s buyer guide describe a Personal free tier with one project and 40 tasks; the buyer guide also says one user. The pricing page displays a Base tier with five projects, one manager, 10 collaborators and 150 tasks per project. The pages may describe different tiers or account states, so these figures do not establish a definitive current free-plan cap. Verify the plan shown during signup and on the TeamGantt pricing page; the 2026 buyer guide is the source of the Personal-tier figures.

Spreadsheet templates: useful for a simple visual
Google Sheets and Excel templates can produce a basic timeline graphic in a spreadsheet you already use. The comparison describes this as manual charting without dependency logic or automatic rescheduling of downstream tasks. Choose this route when a visual is enough, not when the schedule needs to maintain relationships as tasks move.
What to verify before choosing
- Confirm the kind of free access. Identify whether the offer is an ongoing plan, trial, companion product or editable template.
- Test schedule behavior. Link dependent tasks and see whether moving one updates the downstream schedule automatically.
- Count your work. Check limits on projects, tasks, collaborators and Gantt uses, not just whether the product has a free tier.
- Check planning depth. If handoffs or delivery dates matter, look for critical path, milestones and baselines.
- Plan for sharing and portability. Confirm offline access, collaboration, exports and whether you can move project files elsewhere.
