You can hide Spotify listening activity from your profile or followers, and use a Private Session to keep future listening private. Spotify’s official help pages do not document a way to delete individual past plays from the Recents history, so hiding a display is not the same as erasing account history.
What “Spotify history” means
Spotify has several listening displays and sharing controls that are easy to confuse:

- Recents: your listening-history view. Spotify’s Recent activity page says mobile users can open Home, tap their avatar, then tap Recents. On desktop, open Play Queue and select Recents; Spotify describes that desktop view as showing the last 50 songs.
- Recently played artists: artist highlights displayed on your Spotify profile. You can hide these highlights, but that does not delete the plays that contributed to them.
- Listening Activity: a follower-facing sharing setting that controls whether your listening appears in Friend Activity.
- Private Session: a temporary setting for future listening. It stops the session’s listening from appearing in Friends Activity, updating profile recent artists, or being used to personalize recommendations.
Hide recently played artists from your profile
This changes what people can see on your profile; it does not remove songs from Recents or erase past listening records.

- On mobile: swipe left or tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, then under Privacy and social switch off Recently played artists.
- On desktop: click your profile picture and choose Settings. Under Social, turn off On your profile, people can see the artists that you recently listened to.
Spotify says you can turn this setting back on to show the artists again. Labels or menu placement may vary by app version or region. See Spotify’s Recently played artists instructions.

Stop sharing listening activity with followers
Turn off Listening Activity to stop your listening from being shared in Friend Activity. This controls follower visibility, not your Recents list or Spotify’s record of past plays.
- On mobile: open Settings and privacy → Privacy and social, then switch off Listening activity.
- On desktop: click your profile picture → Settings → Social, then turn off the listening activity sharing setting.
Spotify’s Privacy and social controls page notes that a Private Session can temporarily override sharing.

Keep future listening private with a Private Session
A Private Session is for listening from the moment you turn it on; Spotify explicitly says it affects only what you listen to while it is active. It is not a way to remove earlier plays.

- On mobile or tablet: tap your profile picture → Settings and privacy → Privacy and social → switch on Private Session.
- On desktop: click your profile picture and choose Private session.
The session applies across devices on your account and ends automatically after six hours or when Spotify restarts. While it is active, listening does not appear in Friends Activity, recent artists do not update on your profile, and the listening is not used to personalize recommendations. Which control should you use?

Can you delete individual Spotify plays?
The Spotify help pages cited here explain how to view Recents, hide profile artist highlights, stop sharing Listening Activity, and limit future listening with a Private Session. They do not document a control for deleting individual past plays from account history. If you need account-specific information about removing personal data, contact Spotify Support; these help instructions do not establish whether another account-data removal mechanism is available.
