Start by checking for a Fire TV software update. Then decide whether to stop home-screen previews from autoplaying, review the privacy controls, and confirm that picture and sound formats suit your TV and audio equipment. Set parental controls if children use the Stick; use network and app-storage tools when troubleshooting a specific problem. There is no single best configuration for every household, and these changes are not guaranteed to make a Stick faster or eliminate ads.
1. Check for a software update
Open Settings > My Fire TV or, on some software versions, Settings > Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. Amazon includes checking for current software in its Fire TV streaming troubleshooting steps. Treat this as routine maintenance, not a guaranteed speed fix; Amazon’s guidance does not quantify a performance gain from updating.

2. Choose whether home-screen previews should autoplay
To stop Featured Content previews from starting as you browse, open Settings > Preferences > Featured Content > Autoplay and turn autoplay off. Depending on the software, video and audio autoplay may have separate switches. Keep it on if you prefer previews.

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick guide describes the feature this way: “Autoplay is a great way to get a taste of content without having to press a single button.” That is a description of the feature, not evidence that leaving it on or turning it off changes device speed or bandwidth use. Amazon does not quantify such savings.

3. Review the privacy settings by what each one covers
On Fire TV products, Amazon lists these controls under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings. Its Fire TV privacy FAQ says the operating system collects information about use of device features, including home-screen navigation, settings selection, and opening and closing apps or services. The controls have different scopes:
- Device Usage Data: Turning this off opts out of processing that usage data for product improvement and customized marketing. Amazon says some processing needed for device features continues; this does not necessarily stop marketing offers, interest-based advertising based on other data, or processing tied to Amazon services such as Prime Video.
- Collect App Usage Data: Lets you opt out of Amazon collecting information about when third-party apps are opened or closed and how long they are used.
- Interest-based Ads: Instructs apps that use the device’s advertising ID not to use that ID to build advertising profiles or target interest-based ads on the device.
Choose based on your privacy preferences, and consult the privacy information for individual Amazon and third-party apps and services. These switches should not be treated as a way to disable all tracking, advertising, or app data practices. Amazon’s FAQ covers Fire TV products broadly; its over-the-air viewing data setting applies to smart TVs with an antenna, not as a standard Fire TV Stick control.

4. Check format compatibility before changing picture or sound
If you expect 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or surround sound, look for Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics. If available, Amazon says this tool reports detected audio and video capabilities of connected equipment. It is not present on every Fire TV device.

Whether 4K playback works can depend on the streaming service plan, network, TV input, HDMI path, and any receiver or soundbar. If a desired format is unavailable, use the diagnostic and the connected display’s manual to identify the limiting link. Amazon’s surround-sound troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the content supports the format, using a high-speed HDMI cable, and, in some setups, connecting the Fire TV directly to a soundbar or AV receiver. These are conditional troubleshooting steps, not routine purchases.

5. Turn on parental controls if they fit your household
Open Settings > Preferences > Parental Controls. Depending on the controls you select, a PIN can be required before restricted video categories, purchases, or apps can be accessed. This is a household-specific safeguard, not a setup requirement for everyone. See Amazon’s parental-controls guidance for details.
6. Use Network Status to diagnose connection problems
Open Settings > Network > Network Status. Amazon says the tool checks the connection between the Fire TV and router, then the router and internet, and may show recommendations. Some compatible devices provide a speed-test result and more information. This can help distinguish a local Wi-Fi link problem from an internet connection problem.

For 4K playback trouble, check the network before changing picture quality or buying an accessory. Amazon’s network and streaming guidance suggests moving the device closer to the router or using a wired connection when appropriate. Check compatibility with the exact Stick model before buying an Ethernet adapter.
7. Understand storage features and troubleshoot apps only when needed
Auto Offload
On supported devices, Auto Offload is on by default. When storage is low, an unused app may be offloaded after 60 days; Amazon says login information and preferences are saved so the app can be downloaded again. Internet access is needed. The feature is not available on some older Stick models or devices with Kids profiles. See Amazon’s Auto Offload information.

Clearing an app cache or data
Amazon recommends clearing an app’s cache or data for intermittent app problems or low-storage messages, rather than as a routine optimization. Clearing data is app-specific troubleshooting and can remove app state; do not assume it preserves every preference or sign-in. Follow Amazon’s app troubleshooting steps if an app is misbehaving.
Why menu names and options may differ
Amazon support materials use labels including My Fire TV and Device & Software. The available options and exact paths can vary by Stick model, software, geography, and connected equipment. If a listed item is missing, check for a similarly named section or consult support for the exact model rather than assuming the device is faulty.
