For gaming, 32GB is the sensible default for most PC buyers. Moving to 64GB usually does not raise frame rates if your games and other open apps already fit comfortably in 32GB. Choose 64GB when a specific game, large mod setup, streaming workflow, or combination of applications creates a demonstrated need for more memory—not just because a larger number sounds faster.
What changes when you go from 32GB to 64GB?
RAM capacity determines how much data your PC can keep readily available for games and other applications. More capacity can help when the workload exceeds the amount available; it does not automatically make a game run faster. If a game and your usual background apps fit in 32GB, the evidence cited here does not establish a general gaming performance gain from 64GB.

Average frame rate is only part of the picture. Frame-time spikes, 1% lows, stutter during movement through a game world, and changes to texture or asset quality can reveal memory pressure that an average FPS figure misses.

TechSpot’s 2026 capacity test
TechSpot tested a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5090 at 4K, usually with maximum settings, on a three-year-old Windows 11 installation containing existing apps and games. Chrome was open with six tabs, as was Discord. To vary available capacity while keeping the memory kit, timings, frequency, and ranks consistent, the outlet used one 64GB kit and Windows’ maximum-memory setting to simulate 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB. The results describe that test system and workload, not every gaming PC. TechSpot’s 2026 RAM-capacity test

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F32GX2-TZ5NR
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Many of the tested games ran well with 16GB or less. Marvel Rivals and Borderlands 4 performed similarly at 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB in the reported tests. Mafia: The Old Country was a notable exception: TechSpot reported that around 20GB of system memory was needed for a smooth experience and recommended a 24GB-to-32GB kit. Space Marine 2 showed why acceptable headline frame data is not always the whole story: at 8GB, the game could use lower-resolution textures.
TechSpot’s 2024 Hogwarts Legacy test
In a separate test using a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4090, DDR5-6000 memory, and more than 30 games at 1440p with high settings, TechSpot recorded Hogwarts Legacy using 22GB of system memory in its 64GB configuration. Access to 32GB produced similar performance to 64GB. Restricting available memory to 16GB led to frame-time spikes and noticeable traversal stutter over longer play. The result supports 32GB as useful headroom for that workload; it does not show that 64GB is faster than 32GB. TechSpot’s 2024 memory comparison
PC Gamer’s 2026 game-specific results
PC Gamer’s April 2026 hands-on comparison focused on 16GB versus 32GB, so it is not a direct general comparison of 32GB against 64GB. In its Stalker 2 test on an RTX 5070 system, the outlet measured an 11% improvement in 1% low frame rates with 32GB versus 16GB; that figure applies to its setup, scene, settings, and measurement. Its tests of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Hogwarts Legacy showed little difference between 16GB and 32GB, with some stuttering caveats. Escape from Tarkov was tested in a training scenario with AI bots; PC Gamer cautioned that live players raise memory use, and reported that the game’s developers recommend 64GB. | Choose | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 32GB | Gaming with ordinary background apps, when the actual workload stays within capacity and you do not see memory-pressure symptoms. | A sensible default for most gaming-focused desktop buyers. The cited tests do not show a general FPS benefit from 64GB over an adequate 32GB setup. |
| 64GB | A particular memory-heavy game, large mod setup, streaming workflow, or several demanding applications run alongside a game—especially where monitoring or repeatable stutter points to memory pressure. | More room for that workload, but not an automatic frame-rate upgrade. Verify that the PC supports the capacity and module arrangement. |
Do not treat 64GB as a guarantee against future performance problems. The useful question is whether the games and applications you actually run together need more than 32GB. If you are unsure, check system memory use while reproducing your normal workload and pay attention to stutters, 1% lows, and visual compromises rather than relying on average FPS alone.

How to decide for your own PC
- List your real workload. Include the games you play, mods, browser tabs, voice chat, recording or streaming software, and other applications you keep open at the same time.
- Look for evidence of pressure. During the workload that matters to you, check memory use and note repeatable stutter, poor 1% lows, or reduced asset quality. A high capacity number on its own is not proof that more RAM will help.
- Separate RAM from other limits. Resolution, graphics settings, game scene, GPU VRAM, background apps, and test method can all affect results. A benchmark on another system may not predict yours.
- Compare the upgrade with other needs. If memory is not constraining your games, spending on more capacity has no established gaming-FPS advantage over 32GB in the cited evidence; another component or upgrade may be the more relevant bottleneck.
Check compatibility before buying
“32GB” and “64GB” describe capacity, not whether a kit fits your computer. Desktop DDR4 and DDR5 are different generations and are not interchangeable. Laptops may use SO-DIMMs or soldered memory, while desktops generally use DIMMs. Check the motherboard or laptop support page and the CPU’s memory support before choosing a kit.
- Confirm the supported memory generation and module type.
- Check the system’s maximum capacity, available slots, and supported module layout.
- Verify the memory speed the platform supports; a kit’s advertised rating does not guarantee that speed in your system.
- Check whether memory can be upgraded. Some laptops have soldered RAM or limited upgrade options.
For desktop systems, 2×16GB is a common way to make 32GB and 2×32GB a common way to make 64GB, but neither layout should be assumed compatible without checking the system’s support information.
Windows’ minimum is not a gaming recommendation
Microsoft lists 4GB of RAM as the minimum requirement for Windows 11. That is an operating-system minimum, not a recommendation for gaming or a claim that modern games will run well at that capacity. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications
