Set video resolution to Auto, verify the HDMI path if 4K is missing, and then review audio, privacy and accessibility settings according to your equipment and preferences. There is no single best setup for every home, and menu labels can vary by Stick generation and software version.
1. Set video resolution to Auto and check the HDMI path
On the Stick, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Display > Video Resolution and choose Auto. Amazon says the device can notify you if it does not detect HDCP 2.2 on the HDMI connection. Follow the closest matching labels if your software uses a different menu layout.

For 4K playback, Amazon specifies an Ultra HD TV, HDCP 2.2 support through connected home-theater devices, and an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps. Some apps recommend at least 20 Mbps. These are published requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback in every home. Check the TV’s manual or port labels: some TVs support HDCP 2.2 on only certain HDMI inputs. If a receiver or soundbar sits between the Stick and TV, it also needs to support the required signal path.

2. Match audio output to your connected equipment
Start with the device that actually plays the sound: the TV speakers, a soundbar, or an AV receiver. Choose an output format that the connected equipment supports. If audio disappears or sounds wrong after changing formats, return to the previous option or try Auto where available.
Amazon’s detailed audio guide covers PCM, Dolby Digital, Passthrough, Auto, dialogue enhancement, and Bluetooth audio sync for Fire TV Smart TVs. Those controls should not be assumed to exist on every Fire TV Stick. The options shown depend on the device and connection. Consult Amazon’s Fire TV Smart TV audio settings guide as a reference, not as a promise that every listed control appears on your Stick.

3. Review privacy controls separately
On Fire TV, open Preferences > Privacy Settings and review the available controls for Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads. Their labels and availability may vary. Amazon says Fire TV’s operating system collects usage information such as home-screen navigation, settings selections, and app opening or closing.
- Device Usage Data: Amazon says turning this off stops processing of that data for marketing and product-improvement purposes. It does not stop processing needed for device features or Amazon services, or other advertising-related processing.
- Collect App Usage Data: This is a separate control concerning app usage data. Review its description on your device to understand the scope of the setting.
- Interest-based Ads: This is a separate advertising preference; changing Device Usage Data does not change it.
Turning off one control does not disable all data collection or make Fire TV fully private. For Amazon’s explanation of the distinctions, see its Privacy Settings FAQs.

4. Choose accessibility settings for the person watching
Accessibility options are useful when they address a specific need; you do not have to enable them all. Amazon notes that feature and language availability can vary by device.
- Closed captions: During compatible playback, press the remote’s Menu button and open Subtitles to select captions.
- VoiceView: Reads on-screen text while you navigate. Amazon says it works with Fire TV remotes, not the Fire TV Remote App.
- Adaptive Display: Enlarges interface text, menus, icons, and other elements; the available size levels include Large and Larger.
- Audio Descriptions: Available only on select compatible Prime Video titles. During playback, choose an audio track marked Audio Descriptions, or enable the Prime Video option under Accessibility if it is available.
- Other options: Magnification and Text Banner may help with particular vision or reading needs when offered on your device.

5. Check installation only if there is a connection problem
Power and physical access are troubleshooting checks, not settings changes every owner needs to make. For the 2nd-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, Amazon recommends using the included wall power adapter instead of a TV USB port. Its setup guide also says an HDMI extender can help if a port is crowded or hard to reach. These instructions are specific to that generation; check the documentation for your own model.
