You also need to power the stick, select the correct HDMI input, and connect it to the internet. For 4K playback, the TV and the rest of the signal path must meet additional requirements.
What an HDMI port does—and does not—guarantee
For basic setup, Amazon lists a TV with an available HDMI port as a requirement for the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation). Connect the stick, supply power, and switch the TV to that HDMI input. The stick also needs an internet connection for setup and streaming. See Amazon’s setup requirements and input-selection guidance.

That establishes a connection, not 4K compatibility. A TV may accept the stick’s HDMI connection while lacking the resolution or content-protection support needed for 4K.
What you need for 4K playback
Amazon’s general guidance calls for an Ultra HD TV with at least one HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2. It also specifies a high-speed internet connection of at least 15 Mbps and a streaming plan that supports 4K. These are requirements, not a guarantee: the TV, connection, content, and any equipment between the stick and TV must all be compatible. See Amazon’s 4K support guidance.

Check the TV’s HDMI port
Some Ultra HD TVs have HDMI ports that do not support HDCP 2.2. Amazon says ports labeled MHL, HDCP 2.2, UHD, or 4K typically support it, but labels vary; check the TV manual for the specific port. If Fire TV reports an HDCP issue, try a confirmed compatible input and set the Fire TV video resolution to Auto.
Check receivers and soundbars in the signal path
If the stick connects through an AV receiver or soundbar before reaching the TV, that device and its relevant HDMI port also need HDCP 2.2 support. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance additionally calls for 4K passthrough. A compatible TV cannot make up for an incompatible device in between. See Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance.

Check the connection and streaming plan
Amazon specifies at least 15 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD viewing. Some video apps, including Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps, according to the same Amazon guidance. The higher figure is an app recommendation, not Amazon’s universal minimum. A plan that does not include 4K, or a connection that cannot sustain the required bandwidth, can leave content at a lower resolution.

How to connect it and troubleshoot 4K
- Connect the stick: Plug it into an available HDMI port and connect its power as directed in the setup guide.
- Select the input: Use the TV’s input/source control to choose the HDMI port where the stick is connected.
- For 4K, verify the TV port: Confirm in the TV manual that the chosen input supports HDCP 2.2 and that the TV is Ultra HD.
- Check intermediate equipment: If a receiver or soundbar is in the path, verify HDCP 2.2 and 4K passthrough for the device and port.
- Set resolution and verify service conditions: Set Fire TV’s video resolution to Auto, then check the internet connection and whether the streaming plan and selected content support 4K.
When an HDMI extender helps
Amazon describes the HDMI extender as optional when the stick is difficult to plug into the TV. It can help with access or clearance if the stick is crowded by nearby ports or cannot seat comfortably. It does not add HDCP 2.2 support or turn a non-4K TV into a 4K display.

The basic setup example above is specifically Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Generation) guide. Amazon lists multiple generations and variants on its Fire TV Stick 4K specifications page; do not assume that every model has identical ports, power requirements, or features.
