Log poll failures as structured JSON events with stable fields, then filter those events to an explicit 30-day time range. Express 5 forwards rejected promises from returned async route handlers to error middleware; Express 4 requires you to pass asynchronous errors to next(err). A 30-day search window does not, by itself, establish retention or a bill: those depend on the logging provider, region, volume, bucket settings, metrics, and applicable rates.
Build one searchable event for each handled poll failure
Emit a single structured error event where the poll failure is handled. Use a consistent schema so you can filter by event type, service, environment, version, route, or poll name rather than searching arbitrary message text.

This is an application pattern, not a schema required by Express or Google Cloud. Include duration, retry count, or a trace ID only when your application actually records it. Keep values used for filtering bounded; avoid putting unique user, request, or resource identifiers into metric labels unless you have deliberately managed their cardinality.

Handle asynchronous errors according to your Express version
Check the installed Express major version before relying on promise handling. Express 5 forwards errors from rejected promises returned by route handlers; Express 4 requires asynchronous failures to reach next(err). In either version, a detached promise that the handler neither returns nor passes into error handling is not reliably visible to Express.

Express 5
A rejected promise from a returned async route handler is forwarded to error handling automatically. Put the poll operation in the handler’s returned promise chain, and let a single error middleware record the resulting failure.
Express 4
Pass asynchronous failures to next(err), or use the application’s established async-handler wrapper. For example:
app.get('/api/status', async (req, res, next) => {
try {
const result = await runPoll();
res.json(result);
} catch (err) {
next(err);
}
});

Place the error logger after routes
Express error middleware has four parameters and belongs after routes and regular middleware. Log the handled error once, then send an appropriate response. If headers have already been sent, delegate to the next error handler rather than attempting a second response.
app.use((err, req, res, next) => {
if (res.headersSent) return next(err);
logger.error({
event: 'poll_error',
severity: 'ERROR',
service: 'api',
route: req.route?.path,
request_id: req.id,
error_name: err.name,
error_code: err.code,
message: sanitizeErrorMessage(err.message)
});
res.status(500).json({ error: 'Internal server error' });
});
Adapt the example to your logger and redaction policy. Express’s default error handler omits stack traces from responses in production; application logs should still avoid exposing secrets. For framework diagnostics, Express 5 documents DEBUG=express:*,router,router:*, but verbose debug output is not a substitute for stable application-level events: Express debugging.
Search an explicit 30-day interval
Set the interval in the logging product’s time picker or query, using the intended start and end timestamps in the relevant timezone. Filter on the stable event and service fields, then narrow by environment, version, or poll name as needed. The exact query syntax depends on the provider; do not assume a query written for one backend works on another.

- Choose the log source for the deployed service and set the time range to the exact 30 days being investigated.
- Filter for the poll error event and error severity, then add bounded service, environment, version, or poll fields to isolate the workload.
- Review matching entries and their timestamps; verify that routing, exclusions, and permissions have not removed the log stream you intend to measure.
- Record the query interval separately from the log bucket’s retention setting. A lookback query cannot retrieve entries that have expired or were never ingested.
In Google Cloud Logging, structured JSON fields are stored in jsonPayload; plain text is stored in textPayload. Google documents querying JSON paths and indexing selected fields, while text payloads cannot be indexed. These are Cloud Logging behaviors, not a universal guarantee about other platforms. See Google Cloud structured logging.

Separate the cost inputs rather than treating “30 days of logs” as one price. Identify how many matching events or bytes were ingested, what retention applied, and whether derived metrics, queries, exports, or downstream destinations add usage. The available facts establish that some Google Cloud Logging features are chargeable, but they do not establish a universal per-error cost or a bill for an unspecified deployment.
| Cost or coverage factor | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Provider and scope | Provider, project or account, region, and relevant log source | Rates, available controls, and data location depend on the deployed service and scope. |
| Ingestion | Event count or bytes for the interval, plus filters, exclusions, and routing | Observed error count is not necessarily the same as billable ingested volume. |
| Retention | Bucket or destination and its configured retention days | A 30-day query window is distinct from how long entries are retained; longer retention can have additional charges. |
| Derived metrics | Metric type, filter, labels or distribution, and creation date | User-defined Google Cloud log-based metrics are chargeable and include only entries received after metric creation, not earlier history. |
| Queries and exports | Query or scan behavior, export route, and downstream destination | These may have separate usage or billing implications under the chosen provider and configuration. |
| Rate source | The provider’s current rate information for the applicable region and features | A defensible estimate requires current rates and actual usage inputs, not a guessed count multiplied by a guessed unit price. |
For each cost component, label the time period and whether the figure is observed usage, a configured allowance, or an estimate. Do not attribute all logging spend to poll errors unless the query and billing data isolate that workload.

Google Cloud example: retention, metrics, and Node.js permissions
Google Cloud documents default retention of 30 days for project _Default and user-defined log buckets, and 400 days for _Required buckets. For project _Default and user-defined buckets, retention can be configured from 1 to 3650 days; extending retention beyond the defaults may incur charges. Check the actual bucket and configuration before treating those defaults as properties of a deployed project. Details: Cloud Logging quotas and limits.
Google Cloud log-based metrics can count matching entries or extract values into distributions for charts and alerting. User-defined log-based metrics are chargeable and do not backfill entries received before the metric was created. If you need a complete historical 30-day count, search the retained logs for that interval; a newly created metric alone will not supply the earlier history. See Log-based metrics overview.
When using Google Cloud Logging libraries from Node.js, the underlying resource’s service account needs roles/logging.logWriter. Some hosted environments configure that role on a default service account, but verify the identity actually used by the application. See Setting Up Cloud Logging for Node.js. For provider-specific pricing and capabilities, consult the Cloud Logging overview and the applicable current billing information; the evidence here is not enough to calculate a project bill.
Quick Recap
Operational checks before trusting the result
- Confirm the deployed Express major version and test that a rejected poll promise reaches the error middleware.
- Verify every relevant async operation is returned or explicitly forwarded to error handling.
- Check that one failure generates one intended event rather than duplicate logs at both the catch site and middleware.
- Inspect redaction and field bounds before enabling production ingestion.
- Confirm the time-zone interpretation and exact endpoints of the 30-day query window.
- Check retention, ingestion exclusions, metric creation date, and export routes independently of the query interval.
