The right output depends on the Stick generation, TV, HDMI connection—including any soundbar or receiver—plus the app, title and streaming plan. Start by checking what the connected equipment supports; change a setting only when it addresses a specific problem.
Check your model and HDMI setup first
Fire TV menus and available features can differ by model and software version. Identify which Fire TV Stick 4K you own, then note the full signal path: the Stick may connect directly to the TV, or pass through an AV receiver or soundbar first. Each device and HDMI input in that chain must support the format you want.

For example, Amazon lists 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG for the Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen). Those specifications describe the Stick; they do not guarantee that a particular TV input, receiver, app or title supports the same format. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K device specifications and confirm the capabilities of your own equipment.
Use diagnostics before changing picture settings
See what your connected devices report
If your Stick offers it, open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio/Video Diagnostics. Amazon says this tool checks connected HDMI devices, such as a TV, soundbar or AV receiver, for maximum resolution and refresh rate, HDR and Dolby Vision support, and supported surround-sound standards. The tool is not available on every Fire TV device. Amazon’s Audio/Video Diagnostics guidance

If the menu path or tool is absent, do not assume your device is faulty: the feature may not be available on that model. Check the labels shown on your own software version rather than applying a menu path documented for a different Fire TV device.
If 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision is missing
- Check that the TV and every HDMI device between it and the Stick support the desired resolution or HDR format, and that the selected TV input supports it.
- Check the TV’s input and picture settings using the TV maker’s instructions. Receiver and soundbar passthrough can also affect which formats reach the TV.
- Confirm that the app, specific title and streaming plan provide the format. A compatible Stick and TV cannot add 4K or HDR to a stream that does not offer it.
- Run Audio/Video Diagnostics if available to see which capabilities connected HDMI equipment reports.
Amazon documents one specific resolution-negotiation case: a Fire TV device may stream at 1080p 60 Hz for smoother playback when connected to a 4K 30 Hz Dolby Vision TV. For that scenario, Amazon says to set the resolution to 4K 60 Hz. This is targeted guidance for the described compatibility case, not a universal recommendation for every television. Choose audio settings around your equipment
Start with the actual playback route
Determine whether audio plays through the TV speakers, a soundbar or an AV receiver. If Audio/Video Diagnostics is available, use it to check supported surround formats for the connected setup. The Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) specification lists Dolby Atmos (EC3_JOC), but Amazon qualifies it as available on select Prime Video and Disney+ titles when connected to compatible equipment. That does not mean every title or audio chain will deliver Atmos.

Amazon’s explanations of PCM, Dolby Digital, Passthrough and Auto appear on a page for Fire TV Smart TVs; they do not establish that the same controls or labels are available on every Fire TV Stick 4K generation. If speech is hard to hear
Dialogue Boost may help make speech clearer where the feature is available. Amazon says it can also be managed in Fire TV Display & Sounds settings, but availability depends on device and content. Do not confuse Dialogue Boost with AC4 Dialog Enhancer: Amazon describes the latter on its Fire TV Smart TV audio page, which is not universal Stick menu documentation. Fire TV accessibility features
If sound is delayed or a format will not play
Audio delay and format support can involve Bluetooth, HDMI and receiver settings. Check the route the audio takes and the capabilities/settings of those connected devices. Amazon’s available guidance covers diagnostics and Bluetooth audio sync on Fire TV Smart TVs, but does not establish one universal delay-adjustment menu path for Fire TV Stick 4K models.

Which setup should you use?
| Setup or goal | What to check |
|---|---|
| Stick connected directly to TV | Whether the selected TV HDMI input supports the desired resolution, HDR format and audio format. |
| Stick routed through a receiver or soundbar | Whether each HDMI device passes through the desired video formats and supports the audio output. Use diagnostics if present. |
| TV speakers | Whether the TV supports the audio format being sent and whether dialogue clarity is adequate; use Dialogue Boost where available. |
| Soundbar or AV receiver | Whether the connected equipment accepts the detected surround format and whether the HDMI path passes the desired video signal. |
| Automatic output versus a manual setting | Prefer the detected capability unless troubleshooting a specific issue. The documented 4K 30 Hz Dolby Vision case is an exception with Amazon’s stated 4K 60 Hz guidance, not a reason to force that value elsewhere. |
A practical order for changing settings
- Identify the Stick generation, TV input and any receiver or soundbar in the HDMI path.
- Open Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio/Video Diagnostics if your model provides it, and note the reported capabilities.
- For missing 4K or HDR, verify the TV input, every passthrough device, and availability in the app, title and plan before changing resolution.
- For audio problems, establish whether sound uses TV speakers, a soundbar or a receiver; check supported formats and use Dialogue Boost for speech clarity if available.
- Use a manual resolution only when it addresses a documented or observed compatibility issue. Do not copy audio menus or settings from Fire TV Smart TV instructions unless they appear on your Stick.
