If your name or address looks wrong in the voter-registration record when you go to vote, tell a poll worker and ask them to check your registration and precinct. A mismatch does not automatically mean you cannot vote, but the remedy depends on your state and local rules. Ask whether you can update the record or cast a provisional ballot, and what steps or deadlines apply.
What to do at the polling place
- Explain the mismatch to a poll worker. Say whether the problem is your name, address, or both, and provide the information they request. Ask them to verify your registration and tell you whether you are at the correct polling place for your current residence.
- Ask whether the record can be corrected or you should vote elsewhere. Some states permit same-day registration or updates, but that is not universal. The poll worker or local election office can explain what applies in your jurisdiction.
- If eligibility cannot be confirmed, ask about a provisional ballot. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission says that in most states, a voter whose registration cannot be verified will be offered one. A provisional ballot is held separately while officials review eligibility; it is not automatically counted. Ask how to check its status and whether you must provide identification or take another step by a deadline. U.S. Election Assistance Commission, In Person Voting 101
- Contact an election office if the answer is unclear. State and local election officials can give instructions for your location and election. Use the USAGov state and local election-office directory or the Election Assistance Commission’s state election information.
Check whether you are at the right polling place
Your registered address and the place where you are standing are separate questions. If you moved, the polling place for your previous address may differ from the correct location for your current residence. Ask the poll worker to check your precinct, and use your state’s official registration lookup or election-office information to confirm the location. If you are directed to another site, ask whether your current location can offer a provisional ballot or whether you need to go to the correct polling place. Do not assume that a polling-place locator or a general federal summary settles the local procedure; state and local rules control.
What a name or ID mismatch means
Having identification does not necessarily resolve a mismatch between the ID you present and the registration record. Depending on the state’s rules and the details of the discrepancy, officials may ask you to vote provisionally or take another step. Ask which identification is acceptable and whether anything must be submitted after Election Day. State requirements differ; see USAGov’s voter ID requirements and confirm the answer with your election office.

Most voters do not need to bring a voter-registration card on Election Day. A card is not a substitute for any state-required voter ID, and you generally do not need to obtain one just because your record is wrong. USAGov explains voter registration cards.
