Which Financial Metrics Matter Most in Quarterly Results? Revenue, Margins, EPS and Cash Flow

No single quarterly metric gives a complete verdict. Read results as a chain: revenue shows demand and scale, margins show how efficiently sales become operating profit, diluted EPS shows the earnings attributable to each share, and operating cash flow plus free cash flow test whether reported performance turns into cash. Then check guidance, share-count changes and the GAAP-to-adjusted reconciliations.

Start with the four-metric chain

Quarterly analysis works best when each number answers a different question:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Revenue: Are customers buying more, and is the business expanding?
  • Operating margin: How much operating profit is produced from each dollar of revenue?
  • Diluted EPS: How much earnings reached each diluted share after interest, taxes and share-count effects?
  • Operating cash flow and free cash flow: Did accounting earnings become cash that can support the business?

The most important metric depends on the company and the question. A fast-growing company may need revenue momentum; a mature company may be judged more heavily on margins and cash generation. A quarter with strong EPS but weak cash conversion needs a different interpretation from one with flat sales and exceptional cash flow.

1. Revenue: the growth starting point

Revenue is the first test because it shows the scale of customer demand. Compare both year-over-year growth, which controls for seasonality, and sequential growth, which shows the latest operating direction. Do not stop at the headline percentage.

Test the quality of revenue growth

Identify whether the change came from volume, price, product or customer mix, acquisitions, foreign exchange or one-time timing. If the company reports organic or constant-currency growth, compare it with reported growth. A large gap can mean acquisitions or currency translation, rather than stronger underlying demand.

Also check segment mix and recurring revenue where disclosed. Broad growth across major segments is generally more durable than a single product or geography carrying the quarter. Revenue growth deserves more weight when it arrives with stable or improving margins and cash generation.

Example: Cognizant’s Q2 2026 revenue

Cognizant Technology Solutions reported Q2 2026 revenue of $5.481 billion, up 4.5% year over year. That establishes the demand and scale result, but it does not by itself show whether the additional sales were profitable or cash-generative. Those questions require the next three metrics.

2. Margins: the test of operating quality

Operating margin is calculated as operating income divided by revenue. It shows how efficiently the company converts sales into operating profit before interest and taxes. A rising margin can reflect pricing, a favorable product mix, productivity, or cost control. It can also result from temporary cuts, unusually low spending or an easy comparison.

Compare GAAP and adjusted margins

Use the GAAP operating margin as the anchor, then inspect any adjusted margin. Read the reconciliation line by line to see whether the company excluded amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring, acquisition costs or other items. Similar labels are not automatically comparable: each issuer can define its adjustments differently.

For Q2 2026, Cognizant reported a 15.9% GAAP operating margin and a 16.0% adjusted operating margin. The narrow difference indicates that the listed adjustments had little effect in that quarter, but the reconciliation remains necessary before comparing Cognizant with another company.

Interpret margin movement with revenue

  • Revenue up, margin up: growth is accompanied by better operating leverage or mix.
  • Revenue up, margin down: demand is growing, but delivery costs, pricing pressure or investment are consuming more of each sales dollar.
  • Revenue flat, margin up: efficiency may be improving, although cost cuts can make the result temporary.
  • Revenue down, margin up: the company may be protecting profit through reductions, but the shrinking demand base still matters.

3. EPS: per-share economics, not total profit

Diluted earnings per share divides earnings attributable to common shareholders by the weighted-average diluted share count. It is the most direct quarterly measure of what each share earned, which makes it especially relevant to investors who own the stock rather than the company in the abstract.

Use diluted GAAP EPS first

Start with diluted GAAP EPS because it reflects the reported earnings available to each diluted share. Then review adjusted EPS, the reconciliation, tax and interest changes, and weighted-average diluted shares.

Cognizant reported GAAP diluted EPS of $1.36 and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.37 in Q2 2026. The one-cent difference should not be treated as a universal definition of adjusted earnings; it reflects that issuer’s stated adjustments for that period.

Check the share-count bridge

EPS can grow faster than net income when buybacks reduce the number of shares. Conversely, operating improvement can fail to reach EPS if stock compensation, acquisition consideration or other dilution increases the share count. Compare diluted shares with the prior-year quarter and determine whether EPS growth came from higher earnings, fewer shares, or both.

Interest expense and taxes can also move EPS independently of operations. A company can report a better operating margin while higher borrowing costs or an unfavorable tax rate hold down per-share earnings.

4. Cash flow: whether earnings become cash

Cash flow tests the quality and liquidity of reported earnings. Begin with net cash from operating activities, then examine working-capital movements and capital expenditures.

Operating cash flow

Operating cash flow includes cash generated by the core business after working-capital movements. A quarter can show rising earnings but weak operating cash flow if receivables increase, inventory builds or payables decline. Those movements may be normal timing effects or signs that reported profit is not yet being collected.

Free cash flow

Free cash flow generally means operating cash flow minus capital expenditures, but definitions vary. An SEC-filed Octave exhibit defines free cash flow as cash flow from operations net of capital expenditures and defines free-cash-flow margin as free cash flow divided by revenue. The same filing warns that free cash flow “is not a measure of cash available for discretionary expenditures.” Treat it as a supplemental measure, not a replacement for GAAP cash-flow figures.

Compare cash conversion with net income over several quarters rather than treating one quarter as definitive. A single payment cycle can distort working capital, while a sustained gap deserves investigation.

Example: Expedia Group’s Q2 2026 cash generation

Expedia Group reported Q2 2026 revenue of $4.315 billion, up 14%; operating income of $800 million, up 65%; and diluted EPS of $7.16, up 188%. It also reported $1.478 billion of net cash from operating activities, up 32%, and $1.279 billion of free cash flow, up 39%. The cash figures support the earnings result, while still requiring review of the company’s definition and capital spending.

How to compare two companies or two quarters

Use the same five-axis process for every company. Keep the period, currency and accounting basis consistent.

  1. Measure revenue growth and quality. Record year-over-year and sequential changes, organic or constant-currency growth, segment mix and recurring versus one-time drivers.
  2. Compare margin direction. Put GAAP operating margin beside adjusted margin, and read each reconciliation before drawing a conclusion.
  3. Analyze diluted EPS. Compare GAAP EPS, adjusted EPS, net income and diluted shares to identify buyback or dilution effects.
  4. Check cash conversion. Review operating cash flow, working-capital movements, capital expenditures and the issuer’s free-cash-flow definition.
  5. Compare guidance with the prior outlook. A result above the old forecast can matter more than a result that merely beats an analyst estimate, while lowered future guidance can outweigh a strong historical quarter.
Axis Questions to ask Warning sign
Revenue Is growth organic, broad-based and recurring? Growth depends on acquisitions, currency or one-time timing
Margins Are GAAP and adjusted margins moving together? Improvement appears only after large exclusions
EPS Did earnings rise, or did share count fall? EPS growth is much faster than net income without a clear reason
Cash flow Does operating cash flow track net income over time? Receivables or inventory absorb cash repeatedly
Guidance Is the new outlook above or below the previous one? Management raises the quarter’s result but cuts the forward range

GAAP versus adjusted results

GAAP figures follow standardized accounting rules and provide the primary basis for comparison. Adjusted or non-GAAP figures can help isolate management’s view of recurring operations, but they are supplemental. The SEC-filed Octave exhibit states that non-GAAP measures should be considered “in addition to, and not as replacements for,” the comparable GAAP measure.

Build a bridge rather than choosing whichever number looks better. For margin, start with GAAP operating income and identify each excluded cost. For EPS, start with diluted GAAP EPS and trace adjustments through tax effects. For free cash flow, start with the statement of cash flows and verify capital expenditures and the issuer’s definition.

When the metrics disagree

Strong revenue, falling margins

This pattern suggests demand is present but profitability is under pressure. Investigate discounting, labor or input costs, customer mix and investment spending. The growth may still be valuable if management can explain a deliberate, temporary investment; otherwise, the lower margin reduces the quality of the expansion.

Rising EPS, weak cash flow

Review receivables, inventory, contract assets, payables and capital expenditures. Determine whether the difference is a normal timing issue or a repeated failure to collect reported earnings. Also check whether buybacks, rather than higher net income, are driving the EPS increase.

Strong cash flow, flat revenue

This can describe a mature business that converts sales efficiently, or a shrinking business releasing working capital. Separate recurring operating cash generation from one-time balance-sheet movements and confirm whether management’s guidance assumes renewed growth.

Guidance and management commentary

Quarterly results describe the past; guidance describes management’s current expectations. Compare the new range with the immediately preceding outlook and note changes in revenue, margin, EPS and cash-flow assumptions. Management explanations can identify whether a result was broad-based or concentrated.

Ravi Kumar S., Cognizant’s chief executive officer, said, “Our organic revenue growth momentum continued in the second quarter and was at the high end of our expectations,” in the Q2 2026 release. Ariane Gorin, Expedia Group’s chief executive officer, said, “We exceeded the high end of our guidance in the quarter, driven by growth in our consumer brands, sustained B2B momentum, and disciplined execution.” Such statements are useful context, but the reported numbers and reconciliations remain the evidence to test those explanations.

A practical quarterly-results checklist

  • Write down reported revenue, year-over-year growth and sequential growth.
  • Separate organic, constant-currency, acquisition and foreign-exchange effects.
  • Record GAAP operating margin and every adjusted-margin exclusion.
  • Record diluted GAAP EPS, adjusted EPS and weighted-average diluted shares.
  • Compare net income with operating cash flow and explain working-capital changes.
  • Subtract capital expenditures using the company’s stated free-cash-flow definition.
  • Compare new guidance with the previous guidance, not just with a consensus estimate.
  • Read footnotes for seasonality, one-time items, tax changes, interest costs and non-GAAP definitions.

The best quarterly judgment is therefore a connected one: revenue establishes demand, margins establish operating quality, diluted EPS establishes per-share economics, and cash flow establishes conversion and liquidity. Weight the metric that answers your decision, but use all four before reaching a conclusion.
