The Canon EOS R can charge an LP-E6N battery inside the camera, but only with Canon’s PD-E1 USB power adapter and while the camera is switched off. An LP-E6 battery cannot be charged in-camera this way. For either battery when removed, use a compatible external charger; for extended camera operation from mains, use a separate AC adapter and DC coupler.
Choose the right way to power your EOS R

Charge a removed battery with an external charger
The EOS R accepts LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries. To charge one outside the camera, use a compatible LP-E6-series battery charger and follow the charger’s indicator instructions. Canon’s EOS R Advanced User Guide includes battery-charging guidance, and Canon’s LP-E6NH product information identifies the LC-E6E as a compatible mains charger.

Do not assume a charger is included with every camera kit or that the plug is the same in every region. Check the battery and charger model before buying or using a replacement.

Charge an LP-E6N inside the EOS R with PD-E1
Canon’s EOS R-specific instructions state that the USB Power Adapter PD-E1 can charge an LP-E6N without removing it from the camera. Canon’s support article, “Charging the battery in the EOS R using a USB C adapter,” was published July 23, 2024.

- Switch the camera off.
- Insert the PD-E1 connector fully into the camera’s digital terminal.
- Connect the adapter’s power cord to a wall outlet.
- Wait for charging to finish. The access lamp lights green while charging; when complete, it turns off and the LCD indicates “FULL.”
Canon says charging stops if you operate the camera during the process. If a BG-E22 battery grip is installed, both batteries in the grip must be LP-E6N.
Why a generic USB-C adapter is not a substitute
Although the EOS R specifications describe a USB Type-C terminal and list USB power characteristics, Canon restricts in-camera charging to the PD-E1. Do not treat a generic USB-C charger as an equivalent. The PD-E1 also does not power the EOS R for operation.

Use a separate setup for extended mains-powered operation
If you need to run the EOS R from mains for a long session, Canon lists an AC adapter with a DC coupler as an option. This is different from charging a removable battery: the PD-E1 is for in-camera LP-E6N charging, not for powering the camera while you shoot.
