How Big Can a Power Bank Be on a Plane? The 100 Wh Rule Explained

For flights covered by U.S. FAA passenger guidance, a power bank up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) is generally allowed without airline approval. A bank rated 101–160 Wh needs the operating airline’s approval, and one above 160 Wh is forbidden on passenger aircraft. The 160 Wh figure is a conditional ceiling, not a general allowance. Power banks must travel in carry-on baggage, not checked luggage.

What is the largest power bank allowed on a plane?

The limit depends on capacity and airline approval. The FAA’s passenger guidance, based on U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, sets these thresholds:

Power-bank capacity FAA passenger guidance What to do
Up to 100 Wh Generally allowed on passenger aircraft without airline approval. Check the carrier’s quantity limits and any stricter policy.
101–160 Wh Allowed only with the air carrier’s approval; passengers are limited to two spare batteries in this range. Ask the operating airline how to request approval before flying.
Above 160 Wh Forbidden on passenger aircraft. Do not bring it on the flight.

These are FAA passenger rules for the United States, not a universal promise for every route. Airline, security, and international requirements may be stricter. See the FAA passenger battery guidance, its PackSafe overview, and IATA’s traveler guidance; confirm the current policy with the airline operating your flight.

Can you bring a 30,000 mAh power bank?

That label alone is not enough to determine whether a 30,000 mAh power bank fits the limit. Convert its capacity to Wh using the battery voltage: Wh = volts × (mAh ÷ 1,000). Use the Wh rating printed on the device when available, or calculate from its actual voltage.

For example, 30,000 mAh at 3.7 V works out to 111 Wh (3.7 × 30), which falls in the 101–160 Wh range under FAA guidance and therefore requires airline approval. At a different voltage, the Wh result changes. Do not assume every 30,000 mAh bank has the same rating.

How do you check the Wh rating?

  1. Look for a Wh figure on the power bank or battery label. Use that rating when it is clearly provided.
  2. If the label gives only volts and mAh, convert the units. Divide mAh by 1,000 to get amp-hours, then multiply by volts.
  3. Compare the result with the thresholds. Up to 100 Wh is generally allowed without approval under FAA guidance; 101–160 Wh requires airline approval; above 160 Wh is forbidden.
  4. Ask the operating carrier if the marking is unclear or its policy is uncertain. Airline limits may be stricter than the FAA passenger guidance.

As a reference, 20,000 mAh at 3.7 V equals 74 Wh. At 3.7 V, 100 Wh is about 27,027 mAh, but that conversion is illustrative; mAh alone is not a universal cutoff.

Can a power bank go in checked luggage?

No. A power bank is a spare lithium-ion battery and must be carried in the cabin, not checked. The FAA states: “Spare lithium batteries (including power banks and portable chargers) must be carried on and cannot be checked.” If your carry-on is taken at the gate to be loaded into the hold, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin.

How many power banks can you bring?

Under FAA guidance, there is no passenger-use quantity limit for rechargeable batteries under 100 Wh, but an airline can impose a stricter limit. For spare batteries rated 101–160 Wh, the FAA limits passengers to two, and each requires carrier approval. Check the operating airline’s policy for your flight rather than relying on the FAA allowance alone.
