A 2026 comparison names 14 candidates, while the strongest product-specific evidence covers Microsoft Purview, Virtru and Proton Mail. Use the names as a starting point—not as a validated ranking—and choose by how a service protects message content, handles outside recipients and fits your mail platform.
What email encryption actually protects
“Encrypted email” can describe different protections. The distinction matters because encryption between servers does not necessarily keep a message unreadable to the service that handles it.

| Method | What it protects | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| TLS | Protects a connection between mail servers while a message is being transmitted. | It is transport protection, not by itself a guarantee that the message stays encrypted from the mail service or other systems that process it. |
| Message-level encryption | Protects message content so a recipient may need to authenticate or use a portal to read it. | Find out who controls the keys, how external recipients gain access and whether controls such as expiration or revocation apply to their delivery path. |
| S/MIME | Uses certificates and recipient-held keys for peer-to-peer encryption. | Check certificate setup and compatibility on both sides. Microsoft recommends S/MIME when either organization requires true peer-to-peer encryption. |
| IRM | Applies rights-management controls to messages or content. | Confirm which restrictions are available in your configuration and what happens when recipients use different mail clients. |
These methods are not interchangeable. Microsoft 365 supports TLS, Purview Message Encryption, S/MIME and IRM; the right choice depends on whether you need transport protection, controlled external access or peer-to-peer encryption.
Which companies and services belong on an initial shortlist?
The 2026 Expert Insights comparison names the following 14 candidates. It is a secondary comparison, not independent verification of every product’s current capabilities, and its “best” labels should not be treated as a universal ranking.

Treat this as a set of names to investigate, not a recommendation that all 14 meet your requirements. Current features, regional availability, integrations and contract terms need to be confirmed with each provider. The available product-specific details below are not enough to make a like-for-like ranking across the entire list.
When Microsoft Purview may be enough
For an organization already using Microsoft 365, Purview Message Encryption is one option to assess before adding a separate service. Microsoft documents policy and mail-flow-rule configuration, with recipients opening messages in Outlook or through a web portal depending on their environment. That can cover external recipients, but the recipient workflow is part of the security decision: test it with the mail clients and devices your customers and partners actually use.

Revocation, expiration and licensing
Microsoft documents expiration and revocation through Advanced Message Encryption for externally shared messages under specific conditions. Portal-based access and the applicable branding and mail-flow-rule setup affect whether those controls apply. Do not assume that a message can always be revoked after sending; verify the exact recipient route and configuration first.

When to evaluate a separate provider
A separate service may be worth evaluating when the required key-management model, recipient experience, workflow automation or cross-platform support is not met by the tools already available in your mail environment. For Google Workspace and Microsoft users, Virtru describes support for those systems. Its vendor materials also describe Private Keystore, which lets an organization host keys in a chosen location, including use with Google client-side encryption. Treat these as vendor statements: validate the architecture, configuration, contractual terms and operational responsibilities for your own deployment.
Proton Mail is described in TechRadar’s 2026 review as a privacy-oriented email provider, with default encryption among Proton users and password-protected messages to external recipients. Those details come from secondary reporting; verify current business features, recipient workflow and pricing directly with Proton before making a procurement decision.

How to compare candidates for your organization
Ask vendors to demonstrate the same realistic use cases rather than relying on a feature list. Include internal and external recipients, your actual mail clients, attachments, mobile access and the policies your organization needs to enforce.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Protection scope: Is encryption limited to the server connection, or does it protect message content? Is peer-to-peer encryption required?
- Key control: Who holds and operates the keys? If customer-managed or customer-hosted keys are required, ask how they are provisioned, recovered, rotated and audited.
- Sending workflow: Is protection automatic through a policy or rule, or must the sender select it? Determine how exceptions and misdirected messages are handled.
- Recipient experience: Can outside recipients read messages in their normal client, or must they authenticate through a portal? Test the flow without assuming the recipient has an account with your provider.
- Post-send controls: Establish whether expiration, revocation, forwarding restrictions and audit records are supported—and which configurations and recipient paths they require.
- Platform fit: Confirm compatibility with your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace setup, identity system, mobile clients and any mail gateways already in place.
- Compliance evidence: Ask for documentation relevant to your jurisdiction and obligations. A provider’s general compliance claim does not establish that your own deployment or workflow meets a particular requirement.
- Deployment and contract: Confirm eligible licenses, implementation work, support, regional availability and total contract costs. Enterprise prices are often quote-based, so request a written proposal for your intended scope.
A practical way to make the decision
- Write down the requirement. Decide whether you need TLS, protected message content, true peer-to-peer encryption, or a combination. Include the reason—for example, a policy requirement for recipient-held keys.
- Map the recipient journey. Specify how an external person should receive, authenticate to and read a message, including on a phone or in a non-Outlook client.
- Check what your existing licenses and configuration provide. For Microsoft 365, review Purview, S/MIME, IRM and TLS separately rather than treating them as one feature.
- Run a representative pilot. Test policy-triggered and sender-triggered messages, attachments, external access, audit records and any required expiration or revocation controls.
- Compare written proposals against the same checklist. Record key custody, configuration dependencies, recipient steps, licensing and support so that a low-friction demo does not obscure a material operational difference.
