Buy Sieges of Middle-earth with Promo Card Set when its delivered price is close to the standard expansion. That edition adds two War of the Ring–Éowyn promo mini-expansion cards. If the promo box carries a substantial premium, is unavailable in your region, or you simply want the lowest cost, the standard Sieges of Middle-earth box gives you the same siege system and is the better purchase.
Neither edition is playable by itself. Both are expansions for War of the Ring – Second Edition, so you need that base game before you can use the siege rules, cards, tokens and figures.

The short decision
- Choose the Promo Card Set edition for a collector, a gift, or any purchase where the surcharge over the standard box is small.
- Choose the standard edition when it is materially cheaper, the promo version is sold out, or the buyer cares about the siege mechanics rather than promotional collectibles.
- Buy War of the Ring – Second Edition first if you do not already own it. Sieges of Middle-earth cannot replace the core game.
The publisher’s listing identifies the promo product as WOTR025PO. Retailers may use different stock codes, so match the complete product name and contents rather than relying on a short title alone.

What Sieges of Middle-earth actually is
Sieges of Middle-earth expands War of the Ring – Second Edition with rules and components for major stronghold battles, including the kind of confrontations associated with Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith. It adds a siege layer to the existing game instead of introducing a separate Lord of the Rings board game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ares Games states this limitation explicitly: “This is not a complete game. A copy of War of the Ring – Second Edition is required to use this product.” That requirement affects both editions, not only the promo box. Check that the base copy you own is the Second Edition named by the publisher before ordering.
Standard versus Promo Card Set
| Edition | Included components | Best fit | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Sieges of Middle-earth | Rulebook; 12 plastic siege-engine figures; three special Heroic Feat dice; 12 Despair tokens; Fellowship and Palantír tokens; event cards; Heroic Feat cards; reference sheets | Players who want the complete siege expansion at the lowest verified delivered price | Confirm that the listing is the 2026 Ares expansion, not an older War of the Ring product with a similar name |
| Sieges of Middle-earth with Promo Card Set (WOTR025PO) | Everything in the standard expansion, plus two War of the Ring–Éowyn promo mini-expansion cards | Collectors, gift buyers and players who want every publisher-identified card | Ares lists this edition as a preorder; stock, release timing, taxes and shipping vary by region |
The table is the practical distinction: the promo edition does not replace or expand the siege component list. Its extra value is the pair of Éowyn cards. If those cards are not important to you, paying a large premium buys no additional siege engines, dice or core rules.
How the added components change play
Siege engines
The box contains 12 plastic siege-engine figures. These physical pieces represent the new siege capability on the table and are the most visible difference from a game played with only the base set.

Three special Heroic Feat dice and Heroic Feat cards support exceptional actions by named or significant characters. The reference sheets and rules explain when these elements enter play, so keep the expansion rulebook with the base-game materials rather than trying to fold the cards into an unmodified deck.

Despair, Fellowship and Palantír tokens
The expansion supplies 12 Despair tokens plus Fellowship and Palantír tokens. These markers track effects that ordinary base-game counters do not cover. Keep the new token types separated in storage; mixing them with generic counters makes setup and pack-up slower and increases the chance of using the wrong marker.
Event cards and references
New event cards and reference sheets integrate the siege rules with the existing War of the Ring system. The standard box and the promo box contain the same core event and reference material.
Price, preorder status and release timing
Ares Games lists the Promo Card Set edition at $39.90 excluding tax in its 2026 webshop preorder listing. That is a pre-tax publisher price, not a guaranteed delivered total. Your final amount can be higher after regional tax, shipping, currency conversion or retailer fees.
Recommended Free Tools
The same listing gives an estimated release date of December 31, 2026. “Estimated” matters: preorder dates can move, and a local retailer may receive stock later or earlier than the publisher’s own schedule. The standard edition’s price and availability are not established by that listing, so compare live delivered prices rather than assuming a fixed discount or a permanent price difference.

Which edition fits your situation?
You already own War of the Ring – Second Edition
Compare the two delivered totals. Select the promo box when the difference is modest and you want the two Éowyn cards; select the standard box when the surcharge is large. In either case, you already have the required foundation and only need the expansion.
You do not own the base game
Put War of the Ring – Second Edition at the top of your buying list. You can order it together with either expansion, but purchasing Sieges first leaves you with an unusable box until the base game arrives. Make sure the base listing explicitly says “Second Edition,” because the publisher’s requirement is edition-specific.
You are buying for a collector or as a gift
The Promo Card Set edition is the safer default. The two Éowyn cards are identified by the publisher as promo mini-expansion content, making the bonus tangible and easy to explain to the recipient. Still check the expected delivery date if the gift is needed before the estimated December 31, 2026 release.
You want the lowest cost
Choose whichever verified listing has the lower total after tax and shipping. Do not treat the $39.90 figure as a universal checkout price, and do not pay a large premium solely for two cards unless the buyer values promotional or completionist content.

Player count, age and playing time
| Specification | Publisher listing | BoardGameGeek entry | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Players | 2–4 | Not stated in the cited entry | The expansion is designed for the player range shown by Ares; confirm your group’s base-game format before adding it. |
| Recommended age | 13+ | Not stated in the cited entry | This is the publisher’s age guidance, not a claim about every child’s familiarity with the rules. |
| Play time | 120 minutes or more | 180 minutes | The figures are compatible as planning estimates: a session can run beyond two hours, with 180 minutes listed as the database estimate. |
The added siege decisions can make an already substantial game longer for a group learning the expansion. Reserve a full evening for a first play instead of scheduling it as a short filler game.
A buying checklist that avoids the common mistakes
- Confirm the foundation. Check that you own, or are ordering, War of the Ring – Second Edition.
- Identify the edition. For the bonus version, look for “with Promo Card Set” and, where shown, product code WOTR025PO. For the regular version, verify that the listing names Sieges of Middle-earth as the 2026 Ares expansion.
- Read the contents panel. The core list should mention 12 plastic siege engines, three Heroic Feat dice, 12 Despair tokens, Fellowship/Palantír tokens, cards, references and the rulebook.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add tax and shipping to the displayed price. A pre-tax preorder amount is not an apples-to-apples comparison with a local in-stock price.
- Check timing and region. The promo edition is listed as a preorder with an estimated December 31, 2026 release. Confirm language, regional distribution and the seller’s expected dispatch date.
- Save your order evidence. Keep the product title and contents from checkout. This makes it easier to resolve a shipment that contains a similarly named older War of the Ring item.
Pitfalls and how to handle them
A listing shows an old or ambiguous War of the Ring item
Do not rely on a thumbnail or a short marketplace title. Compare the description with the component list above and look for the 2026 Ares product designation. If the listing does not identify the expansion clearly, ask the seller before paying.
The promo edition costs much more than expected
Use the standard box. The siege rules and physical components are the same; the documented difference is the two Éowyn promo mini-expansion cards. A high premium is therefore a collector decision, not a gameplay requirement.
The preorder date passes without delivery
Check the seller’s updated fulfillment notice and your region’s distribution status. Because December 31, 2026 is an estimate, a delay does not mean you received the wrong edition. If timing is critical, an in-stock standard expansion may be more practical than waiting for the promo box.

You bought the expansion before the base game
Keep the expansion sealed or inventory its components while you obtain War of the Ring – Second Edition. Do not attempt to substitute another edition without confirming compatibility from the publisher.
Is the Éowyn promo worth paying extra for?
There is no universal price threshold because the standard edition’s current price, taxes and shipping differ by seller and country. The objective test is simple: the cards are worthwhile when their incremental cost is small to you and you value exclusive, publisher-identified content. They are not necessary for the siege system, and nothing in the product description indicates that they add the 12 figures, dice or core rules a player needs to use the expansion.
For a first-time player focused on learning the siege mechanisms, direct the budget toward the required base game and a reasonably priced standard expansion. For a collector, completionist or gift recipient, the promo edition removes the later search for two separate cards and is usually the cleaner purchase when available at a near-standard price.
