The original DJI Dock is documented with the Matrice 30 and Matrice 30T. DJI Dock 2 supports only the Matrice 3D series (Matrice 3D and Matrice 3TD), while DJI Dock 3 supports only the Matrice 4D Series (Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD). These are closed pairings: a Matrice 3D-series aircraft is not documented for Dock 3, and a Matrice 4D-series aircraft is not documented for Dock 2.
Choose the aircraft by mission after identifying the dock. The 3D is the mapping-oriented Dock 2 aircraft; the 3TD adds infrared for security and inspection. For Dock 3, the 4TD adds thermal imaging, an NIR auxiliary light and a laser range finder to the 4D platform.

Original DJI Dock: Matrice 30 and Matrice 30T
DJI’s current FlightHub 2 feature matrix lists the first-generation DJI Dock with the Matrice 30 and Matrice 30T as its dock aircraft. That is the current documented pairing to use when evaluating an existing installation or sourcing a replacement aircraft.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The matrix does not establish compatibility for other enterprise aircraft, nor does it specify a universal operating life for every market. A buyer planning a new deployment should therefore ask DJI or an authorized DJI Enterprise dealer to verify firmware support, regional certification, spare-aircraft availability and lifecycle status for the particular dock serial number. Older hardware can remain operational while no longer being the best choice for a new fleet, so the date of the support confirmation matters.
What the original pairing tells you
- Use the exact Matrice 30 or Matrice 30T model identified by DJI for the dock; do not assume that a similarly named Matrice aircraft will fit.
- Check the FlightHub 2 feature matrix and the dock’s release notes together, because a hardware pairing can still be constrained by software versions.
- If you are expanding an installed fleet, have the dealer validate that replacement aircraft and batteries remain obtainable in your country.
DJI Dock 2: Matrice 3D or Matrice 3TD only
DJI’s Dock 2 support FAQ is explicit: “DJI Dock 2 only supports the DJI Matrice 3D series drones.” In practical terms, the supported choices are the Matrice 3D and Matrice 3TD. The same FAQ says that the Matrice 3D series can only be used with DJI Dock 2, so these aircraft should not be treated as transferable assets for a Dock 3 deployment.
Choose Matrice 3D for mapping
The Matrice 3D is the mapping-focused option in this generation. DJI specifies a mechanical shutter and describes it as suitable for 1:500 high-precision mapping. A mechanical shutter helps keep image timing consistent as the aircraft moves, which is important when a mapping workflow must align a large number of photographs for survey processing. The 1:500 description is DJI’s stated suitability, not a guarantee that every site, flight plan or processing workflow will achieve a particular accuracy.

Choose Matrice 3TD for security and inspection
The Matrice 3TD adds an infrared camera and is the Dock 2 choice DJI describes for security and inspection. That makes it the more appropriate selection when an operator needs visual information from the visible spectrum together with infrared observations during recurring autonomous missions. The cited compatibility information does not define a universal detection distance or temperature-measurement accuracy, so those mission requirements must be validated separately.
Dock 2 fleet topology limits
Dock 2’s current firmware does not support one drone with multiple docks, and it also does not support one dock with multiple drones. A Dock 2 deployment should therefore be planned as a one-aircraft, one-dock pairing unless DJI publishes a later firmware change. Buying extra aircraft as interchangeable spares for several Dock 2 locations is not the same as having one aircraft legally or technically assigned to several docks; the documented multi-dock behavior does not allow that arrangement.
DJI Dock 3: Matrice 4D or Matrice 4TD only
DJI’s Dock 3 FAQ states: “DJI Dock 3 only supports the DJI Matrice 4D Series drones.” The supported aircraft are the Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD. DJI also documents the Matrice 4D Series as dock-specific, so a 4D-series aircraft should not be purchased with the expectation that it can be moved to Dock 2.

What the Matrice 4D provides
The Matrice 4D is the standard aircraft in the Dock 3 family. It is the appropriate baseline when a project needs Dock 3 operations without the additional sensing package DJI lists for the TD variant. The compatibility statement does not, by itself, define every camera mode, mapping accuracy or inspection result; those depend on the aircraft configuration and the mission plan.
What the Matrice 4TD adds
The Matrice 4TD adds three capabilities specifically identified by DJI: thermal imaging, an NIR auxiliary light and a laser range finder. Those sensors make it the Dock 3 choice for work where a visible-light camera alone is insufficient, such as thermal inspection, low-light or near-infrared observation, and range-related measurements. Whether those tools are necessary depends on the site and the information the operator must collect.
Dock 3 fleet topology limits and exception
Dock 3 supports one drone with multiple docks for multi-dock tasks. That can let an organization position several docks along a route or across a large operating area while assigning the same compatible aircraft to those locations, subject to the system’s scheduling, communications and regulatory requirements. DJI still does not support multiple drones with one dock.

DJI notes an exception involving the D-RTK 3 Relay Fixed Deployment Version: multi-dock operation has a specific limitation when the dock links with that relay configuration. Treat the relay arrangement as a design item to verify with DJI rather than assuming that every Dock 3 multi-dock topology behaves identically.
Can a Matrice 4D work with Dock 2, or a Matrice 3TD with Dock 3?
There is no documented cross-generation compatibility. Dock 2 is a closed pairing with the Matrice 3D series, and Dock 3 is a closed pairing with the Matrice 4D Series. DJI’s statements are stronger than a simple “not recommended”: they identify the supported family for each dock and state that the Matrice 3D series can only be used with Dock 2.
Do not rely on physical fit, a shared battery design, a similar controller or an enterprise software account as evidence of dock compatibility. Automated landing, charging, environmental sealing, aircraft identification and flight authorization are all parts of the dock system. A model that is absent from the dock’s support list should be treated as unsupported until DJI confirms otherwise in writing for the relevant firmware and region.

Which pairing fits the mission?
| Primary requirement | Pairing to investigate | Why | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:500 high-precision mapping | Dock 2 with Matrice 3D | DJI identifies the mechanical-shutter aircraft as suitable for this mapping use | Actual survey accuracy depends on flight planning, site conditions and processing |
| Security patrols or inspection requiring infrared | Dock 2 with Matrice 3TD | DJI describes the infrared-camera variant for security and inspection | Detection and measurement performance are mission-specific |
| Dock 3 operations without the TD sensor set | Dock 3 with Matrice 4D | It is one of the two aircraft DJI lists for Dock 3 | Confirm the camera and workflow requirements separately |
| Thermal, NIR or laser-equipped missions | Dock 3 with Matrice 4TD | DJI lists thermal imaging, an NIR auxiliary light and a laser range finder | Sensor usefulness depends on the target, distance and operating conditions |
| Existing first-generation dock | Original DJI Dock with Matrice 30 or Matrice 30T | This is the pairing shown in the current FlightHub 2 matrix | Verify lifecycle, firmware and regional support before expanding |
Hover-time figures: useful for planning, not a guarantee
In DJI’s controlled comparison, the Matrice 3D Series is listed at a maximum hovering time of 40 minutes and the Matrice 4D Series at 47 minutes. DJI identifies both figures as windless controlled tests conducted in 2026. They are not guaranteed autonomous-mission durations.
Payload choice, temperature, wind, flight speed, battery condition, communications behavior and firmware can all change the time available for a mission. Use the figures to compare the families at a high level, then size routes and reserve margins using the conditions expected at the actual site.
Quick Recap
Pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Identify the dock generation. Read the dock’s nameplate, purchase documentation and FlightHub 2 entry. “DJI Dock” without a generation can refer to the original system, Dock 2 or Dock 3.
- Match the full aircraft model. Select Matrice 30/Matrice 30T for the original pairing, Matrice 3D/Matrice 3TD for Dock 2, or Matrice 4D/Matrice 4TD for Dock 3. Do not substitute another Matrice model because its dimensions appear similar.
- Define the sensor requirement. Pick the 3D when DJI’s stated mapping orientation fits the project, the 3TD when infrared is needed, and the 4TD when thermal, NIR or laser functions are required.
- Check software and region. Ask DJI or a local DJI Enterprise dealer to confirm aircraft firmware, dock firmware, FlightHub 2 support, local regulatory approval and the availability of service parts.
- Model the fleet topology. Dock 2 requires a one-drone/one-dock approach under its current firmware. Dock 3 permits one drone with multiple docks but not multiple drones with one dock; verify the D-RTK 3 relay exception if it is part of the design.
- Request written confirmation before ordering. Provide the exact dock and aircraft model numbers, intended country, firmware versions and proposed number of docks. A DJI Dock systems integrator can check installation-specific constraints that a general product listing may not reveal.
Common compatibility mistakes
- Buying by aircraft family name alone: “Matrice” is not a compatibility specification. The dock generation and exact suffix matter.
- Assuming newer means backward-compatible: Dock 3’s Matrice 4D Series does not become a Dock 2 aircraft simply because it is newer.
- Planning shared aircraft on Dock 2: The current firmware does not support one aircraft across multiple Dock 2 units.
- Ignoring lifecycle status: The original Dock pairing is documented, but a new purchase still needs a current regional and firmware-support check.
- Treating hover time as route time: Controlled maximums do not include the operational reserves and environmental penalties required for safe autonomous work.
