Start with tires when wheelspin or loss of grip is stopping you. The developer has confirmed that tire upgrades increase grip, although no percentage gain or guaranteed climb is published. Do not buy a winch expecting stronger pulling force: stronger winches were not planned as an upgrade benefit in the developer’s AMA. A winch only helps when its line can reach a tree or another anchor; a portable anchor or jack solves that geometry problem. If impacts have weakened the vehicle, repair it before spending on performance parts.
There is no evidence-backed universal order for engine, suspension, or other upgrades in the demo. Prices, complete effects, and vehicle-specific specifications are not published, so the safest approach is to diagnose one failure, change one variable, and retest the same obstacle.

The practical upgrade order
Use the failure you can observe—not a presumed “best build”—to decide what to fit. This table reflects the effects that have been directly documented for the demo and separates them from assumptions that are not supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| What is going wrong? | First action | What the evidence does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Wheels spin, or the vehicle loses grip on a climb | Fit a tire upgrade | Developer confirmation says upgraded tires provide higher grip. No percentage increase or guaranteed route result has been published. |
| You are stuck but a tree or other anchor is within line range | Improve winch placement and line geometry before buying parts | The developer said stronger winch pulling power was not planned as an upgrade benefit. Reach, angle and attachment point determine whether the existing winch can help. |
| No tree or other anchor is reachable | Use portable winching equipment, such as a portable anchor or jack, if available | This addresses the position of the anchor. It is not an engine-power upgrade. |
| The vehicle feels weaker after collisions | Repair it before evaluating another upgrade | Damage reduces performance, and repair kits are limited. Testing a damaged vehicle can make a good part look ineffective. |
| You cannot identify the cause | Change one variable and repeat the same obstacle | There is no published price-and-effect table that can support a universal ranking for every part or vehicle. |
In short, tires are the only performance part with a directly stated benefit. Recovery equipment determines whether you can get a line to an anchor, while repairs restore a vehicle whose baseline performance has been reduced by damage.

What unlocks first in the demo
The demo contains three named vehicles: Protector, Burro and Trail Burner. Vehicles are earned through trail challenges rather than by purchasing a car from a conventional store. The demo has three trail challenges, and two of those challenges unlock a vehicle beyond the starter. These counts come from the 2026 Over the Hill Wiki and describe the demo, not necessarily the final release.
Upgrades are installed per vehicle. That changes the spending decision: a part fitted to the starter does not automatically become available on the next vehicle. If a challenge is about to unlock a replacement, avoid sinking scarce resources into the current car unless the part solves a problem you must overcome immediately. A tire upgrade that gets you through the next gate can be worthwhile; an untested part bought only because it sounds powerful is harder to justify when the vehicle may soon be replaced.
A sensible progression rule
- Use the starter long enough to identify the obstacle that actually stops you.
- Check whether the problem is grip, anchor access, or damage.
- Install the smallest relevant change on the vehicle that must complete the next challenge.
- Retest the same section before adding another part.
- When a challenge unlocks another vehicle, reassess the new car instead of assuming the old setup transfers.
This approach preserves Pebbles for a vehicle you expect to keep using and gives you a clean comparison between the stock and upgraded behavior.

Why tires come first for wheelspin
Funselektor developer Pete_MG stated: “if you upgrade the tires then the grip becomes higher.” That is the clearest upgrade effect currently documented. If the engine is running but the wheels repeatedly spin, the vehicle slides sideways, or it cannot maintain traction on a wet or loose section, tires are the logical first experiment.

The statement does not supply a numerical gain. There is no published percentage, traction coefficient, or list of climbs that an upgraded tire is guaranteed to conquer. Treat the improvement as a direction—more grip—not as a promise that every route becomes easy. The result can still vary with the vehicle, surface, weather and condition of the tires.
How to test a tire upgrade without fooling yourself
- Choose a repeatable obstacle where the failure is wheelspin rather than a missing anchor.
- Record the conditions: vehicle, weather, tire condition and damage state.
- Repair the vehicle if it has taken damage, because damage itself reduces performance.
- Fit the tire upgrade and attempt the same line, speed and approach.
- Compare whether the wheels hold the surface for longer or climb farther. Do not convert one successful attempt into a claimed percentage gain.
Weather and tire condition affect grip according to the official FAQ information collected by the guide. A route that works in dry conditions may behave differently when wet, and worn or compromised tires can change the result. For a fair comparison, keep those factors as constant as the game allows.
What a winch upgrade can—and cannot—do
A winch is a recovery tool, not a documented power upgrade. In the developer AMA, stronger winch pulling force was not planned as an upgrade benefit. Buying a different winch should therefore not be your response to every failed pull. First ask whether the cable can reach a suitable anchor and whether the line is positioned to pull the vehicle out rather than sideways into another obstacle.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When the existing winch is enough
If a reachable tree or another anchor is available, work on line geometry. Move the vehicle so the cable is as direct as possible, attach to the reachable point, and avoid wrapping the line around an angle that wastes the pull. The same winch can be effective from one position and useless from another because the anchor’s distance and direction have changed.

When you need a portable anchor or jack
If there is no nearby tree or other fixed point, a stronger pull cannot solve the missing attachment point. The available equipment includes portable winching gear; the guide specifically identifies a portable winch anchor or jack as the response to this situation. These tools change where force can be applied. They do not add engine output or guarantee that a damaged vehicle will climb.
A recovery sequence for a stuck vehicle
- Stop spinning the wheels and inspect the surroundings for a reachable tree or other anchor.
- If an anchor is reachable, reposition for a straighter line before attaching the winch.
- If no anchor is reachable, deploy the portable anchor or jack from your available equipment.
- Pull in short, controlled attempts while watching whether the vehicle is moving toward firm ground.
- Once free, inspect damage and repair before judging the vehicle’s performance on the next obstacle.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: interpreting a lack of anchor access as evidence that the winch needs more strength.
Repair before comparing performance parts
Impacts can leave a vehicle feeling weaker because damage reduces performance. Repair kits are limited, so use them deliberately, but do not evaluate a new tire—or any future engine or suspension part—on a vehicle that is already impaired. Otherwise you are comparing “upgraded and damaged” with “stock and healthy,” which tells you little about the upgrade.
When to spend a repair kit
- Repair before a controlled upgrade test on a repeatable obstacle.
- Repair before a difficult challenge where a performance loss could turn a recoverable mistake into a failed run.
- Do not consume a kit merely to repeat a low-risk section if the vehicle’s condition will not affect the decision you are making.
The last point matters because the supply is limited. Preserve kits for situations where restoring baseline performance changes your decision, not simply for cosmetic neatness.

Weather, tire condition and route choice
Grip is not a fixed number attached only to the upgrade screen. The official FAQ information collected by the guide says weather and tire condition affect grip, while damage reduces performance. That means the same vehicle and tire setup can produce different results on the same route under different conditions.
Challenge trails, points of interest, cabins that act as save points, portable winching equipment and a day-night cycle were all noted in PC Gamer’s demo report. Use cabins as recovery checkpoints before committing to a difficult trail, and learn the recovery equipment on a manageable route rather than discovering its limitations deep into a run. A day-night change can also alter how confidently you can read the terrain, so plan difficult attempts around a checkpoint instead of treating every departure as a one-way push.

The developer said points of interest provide enough Pebbles for upgrades on most vehicles. Completing all of the demo’s unlocks, however, requires extracting some meteorites; meteorites were described as infinite. No spawn timer or earnings rate has been published, so there is no reliable farming-per-minute figure to plan around.

Installing, unmounting and the refund question
Upgrades can be mounted and unmounted. Pete_MG’s wording is explicit: “you can currently unmount upgrades but not sell them or move them to other cars.” Unmounting should therefore be treated as reversible fitting, not as a confirmed refund. The available information does not establish that removing a part returns its Pebbles.
That distinction affects experimentation. You can remove a tire or another fitted part when you want to test a different configuration on the same vehicle, but you should not spend on the assumption that the currency comes back. You also cannot transfer the part to a newly unlocked Protector, Burro or Trail Burner, so fit expensive or uncertain upgrades only when the current vehicle still has a job to do.
A repeatable decision framework for every upgrade
Because engine, suspension and other part effects are not fully published, use this six-question check before buying:
- What exactly failed? Separate wheelspin from a lack of anchor, a damaged vehicle, and a route that simply needs a different line.
- Which vehicle is being tested? Record whether it is the Protector, Burro or Trail Burner; an upgrade on one car does not describe another.
- What are the terrain and weather? Note surface, wetness and tire condition because they affect grip.
- Is the vehicle damaged? Repair before comparing performance if damage could be the cause.
- Can a reachable anchor solve the problem? If yes, adjust winch geometry. If no, consider portable equipment rather than a stronger winch.
- Can you change only one variable? Fit one part, repeat the same obstacle, and keep the result as an observation rather than a universal ranking.
This framework is more reliable than copying a build order from another vehicle or assuming that a higher-priced part must be better. Prices, complete effects and per-vehicle specifications remain unpublished for the demo, so controlled observation is the only defensible way to compare unlisted parts.
What is still unknown
There is no source-backed ranking that says engine first, suspension second, or any other fixed sequence for every player. The documented evidence covers higher grip from tire upgrades, the absence of a planned stronger-winch benefit, the usefulness of portable anchors when no fixed anchor is reachable, and the performance penalty from damage. It does not provide:
- A percentage grip increase for upgraded tires.
- A guaranteed list of climbs that tires will conquer.
- Final-game prices for upgrades or vehicles.
- A complete effect sheet for engine, suspension or other parts.
- Vehicle-by-vehicle specifications that prove one car is universally superior.
- A refund amount when an upgrade is unmounted.
- A meteorite spawn timer or Pebbles-per-minute rate.
Keep those gaps in mind when reading claims about a “best” build. A recommendation that ignores vehicle, terrain, weather, damage and anchor access is broader than the available evidence allows.
A first-session plan
- Drive the starter vehicle through an easy section and learn how the grip changes with the current weather and tire condition.
- Locate a repeatable climb or loose section where wheelspin is the clear failure.
- Repair any damage, fit tires, and repeat that same line.
- Practice attaching the winch to a reachable tree or other anchor; experiment with vehicle position and line angle.
- Try the portable anchor or jack when the route offers no fixed anchor, so you know the difference between an equipment problem and an engine problem.
- Use a cabin as a save point before a difficult challenge.
- Collect Pebbles at points of interest and avoid fitting multiple untested parts at once.
- When one of the three demo challenges unlocks a new vehicle, reassess its behavior from stock before moving upgrades onto your shopping list; fitted parts cannot be moved between cars.
Following that order gives you a useful baseline, protects limited repair kits, and makes the tire upgrade’s documented grip benefit easier to recognize without promising a result the demo has not measured.
