DJI Support states that battery replacement is “Not supported. Only charging mode is supported.” An operator must land the aircraft, make the dock safe, remove the battery manually, install the exact compatible replacement, and verify the result in DJI FlightHub 2. The procedure differs by aircraft generation, so first determine whether you are servicing the original DJI Dock with an M30-series aircraft or DJI Dock 2 with a Matrice 3D-series aircraft.
What the dock can—and cannot—do
Both the original DJI Dock and DJI Dock 2 are unattended charging stations, not robotic battery-swapping systems. The aircraft can return, land and charge, but the dock has no mechanism for removing a depleted pack and inserting another one. DJI’s support answer to whether a dock can change the aircraft battery is: Not supported. Only charging mode is supported.
DJI gives the same limitation for Dock 2.

That distinction matters operationally. A battery that has reached its service limit, developed a fault or become physically damaged cannot be left in service merely because the dock still charges it. A trained operator must schedule a maintenance window, shut down and isolate the equipment as required by the maintenance manual for that exact model, and perform the physical replacement away from active missions.
Two battery systems are involved
- Aircraft Intelligent Flight Battery: the removable lithium battery that powers the drone. This is the pack you replace when cycle count, condition or persistent errors require it.
- Dock backup battery: a separate battery inside the dock that keeps selected dock functions operating during a mains outage. It is not an aircraft battery and cannot charge the aircraft while the dock is without external power.
Do not order a replacement based only on a similar-looking connector. Confirm the dock generation, aircraft model and official battery designation before purchasing or installing anything.

When a Matrice 3D battery must be replaced
For DJI Dock 2 and the Matrice 3D Series, DJI’s Maintenance Manual identifies three replacement triggers. Replace the aircraft battery when any one of them applies:
- It is visibly swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged.
- It has reached its rated 400 charge cycles (DJI, 2024).
- A battery error remains after two consecutive standard charge-and-discharge operations.
These are not merely suggestions for improving flight time. DJI warns that continued use after the battery’s life is reached can leave the user responsible for device damage and losses to third parties. Treat a FlightHub 2 warning as a maintenance action, not as a notification to dismiss.
Physical condition takes priority over the counter
A pack can be unsafe before it reaches 400 cycles. Swelling, a split casing, liquid, burn marks, impact damage, unusual heat or a smell different from normal operation are reasons to stop using it immediately. Do not attempt to flatten, open, tape, pierce or repair a damaged lithium pack. Remove it from operational service, keep it away from combustible materials and follow DJI’s discharge and recycling directions.

Use that exact Matrice 3D-series designation and verify compatibility with the aircraft’s current model documentation. An unrelated DJI Intelligent Flight Battery may have a similar shape or connector while using different electrical limits, firmware identification or mechanical tolerances. A connector that fits is not proof that the battery is approved.
Dock 2 charging-base limits
The Dock 2 charging base accepts 5–20 V USB-C input, is rated at 100 W, and provides 12–17 V at the battery port. It charges one aircraft battery at a time and is specified for a charging-base temperature of 5–40 °C. These limits describe the dock’s charging hardware; they do not authorize charging a different battery model or charging outside the aircraft battery’s specified range.
How to replace the aircraft battery safely
The exact latch and removal sequence is model-specific. DJI’s cited documents do not publish one universal screwdriver sequence for every Dock generation, so use the current maintenance manual for your aircraft and dock rather than adapting instructions from another model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Identify the equipment. Record whether the installation is the original DJI Dock/M30-series system or Dock 2/Matrice 3D Series. Note the aircraft serial number and the battery designation required by that aircraft.
- Review FlightHub 2. Open the aircraft and battery status views, then check cycle count, temperature history and error details. Save any warning information needed for the maintenance record. Stop operations immediately for swelling, leakage, impact damage, overheating or a reached cycle limit.
- End the mission normally. Command the aircraft to return, let it land and wait for the aircraft and dock to finish their active operations. Do not begin a battery change while a mission, update or automated landing sequence is still running.
- Power down and isolate the dock. Follow the shutdown, isolation and access steps in the maintenance manual for that exact generation. The dock must not be able to launch, move the aircraft or energize charging contacts while the pack is being handled.
- Remove the aircraft battery. Use the aircraft’s specified release controls. Do not pry against the cell casing, pull on wires, short the contacts or open the pack. If the battery is swollen or damaged, minimize handling and place it in the quarantine arrangement required by your site’s lithium-battery safety procedure.
- Inspect the bay. Check that the contacts, guides, latches and surrounding surfaces are clean, dry and undamaged. Do not use the aircraft if a contact is bent, contaminated or showing heat damage; correct that fault through an approved service procedure first.
- Install the replacement. Fit only the exact DJI-compatible battery for the aircraft. Seat it fully until the aircraft’s retention mechanism engages. Never force a pack into the bay or modify the casing, latch or connector.
- Restore power and inspect status. Re-energize the dock exactly as the manual specifies. Confirm that the aircraft recognizes the pack, that charging begins normally and that no battery warning remains in FlightHub 2.
- Run a controlled verification. Before returning to unattended missions, check battery identification, state of charge, temperature readings and the aircraft’s ability to complete its normal docked charging sequence. Record the replacement date, cycle count and any observed fault.
- Quarantine the old pack. Keep failed or damaged batteries out of service. DJI’s maintenance guidance calls for full discharge and recycling according to its Safety Guidelines. Never put a damaged lithium battery in ordinary household or commercial waste.
What not to improvise
- Do not create a battery-swap routine from a different DJI aircraft.
- Do not bypass a FlightHub 2 warning by clearing the message without fixing its cause.
- Do not charge a hot battery immediately after flight; allow it to cool first.
- Do not charge near fuel, solvents, paper, packaging or other flammable materials, and do not charge on a flammable surface.
- Do not charge or store the battery in a humid environment, where condensation or moisture can cause a short circuit.
Charging and temperature controls
For the Matrice 3D-series aircraft battery, DJI specifies charging between 5 and 45 °C (41 and 113 °F). The Dock 2 charging base itself is specified to charge one battery at a time at 5–40 °C. Keep the battery and dock within the narrower limit that applies to the component reporting the condition.

If FlightHub 2 reports that battery temperature is too high, DJI’s maintenance instruction is to initiate return-to-home immediately. Do not continue an operation merely because the aircraft still responds to commands. Once the aircraft is safely docked, investigate airflow, ambient heat, charging conditions and the battery’s physical state before authorizing another mission.
Safe charging checklist
- Battery casing and contacts are dry, clean and intact.
- Battery has cooled after flight.
- Dock and charging area are ventilated and free of combustibles.
- Ambient and component temperatures are within the published limits.
- Charging starts without an error and the battery percentage rises normally.
- FlightHub 2 shows the expected battery identity and no unresolved warning.
How to store a DJI aircraft battery
For storage longer than 10 days, DJI’s routine battery guidance recommends reducing the battery to 40–65%. Store it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location; DJI’s ideal temperature range is 22–28 °C. Avoid direct sunlight, heaters, vehicles exposed to high temperatures and places where condensation can form.
Storage is not a “charge to 100% and forget it” process. About every three months, perform DJI’s maintenance cycle:
- Charge the battery fully.
- Insert it in the aircraft and power the aircraft on without taking off.
- Discharge it until the last indicator starts flashing.
- Recharge it fully.
- Power the aircraft on again and discharge the battery to 65%.
- Remove it and return it to the recommended storage environment.
Charge only after the battery has cooled following flight. If the pack will not hold a charge, becomes unusually hot, swells or produces an error during this cycle, stop the process and quarantine it instead of repeating the test indefinitely.

Handling a failed, swollen or leaking pack
A damaged lithium battery requires a different response from a normal end-of-life battery. Do not disassemble, pierce, compress or immerse it. Keep people and combustible materials away, avoid creating a short across the contacts and follow the DJI Safety Guidelines and your organization’s hazardous-battery procedure for isolation, full discharge and recycling.
If damage is discovered while the aircraft is in the dock, stop missions and make the dock safe before attempting removal. If the battery is hot, smoking or actively venting, withdraw personnel and contact emergency services according to your site plan rather than attempting a routine replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The Dock 2 backup battery is a separate maintenance issue
Dock 2 contains a built-in 12 Ah, 12 V lead-acid backup battery. DJI rates runtime at more than five hours when the backup battery is fully charged at 25 °C. This figure describes backup operation under DJI’s stated conditions, not aircraft flight time or the number of aircraft charges available during an outage.
After a power outage, DJI states that Dock 2 cannot charge the aircraft and cannot run air-conditioning, dock-cover heating or wind-speed-gauge heating from that outage condition. Therefore, backup power is not a substitute for mains power or aircraft-battery maintenance. Check dock malfunctions promptly after an outage and restore normal power before planning operations that require charging or environmental control.

Because the lead-acid backup battery is distinct from the Matrice 3D lithium flight battery, do not apply the aircraft battery’s 40–65% storage rule, cycle limit or replacement procedure to the dock backup system. Use the dock’s own service documentation and approved parts for that component.
Original DJI Dock versus DJI Dock 2: maintenance decisions
| Question | Original DJI Dock | DJI Dock 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic aircraft-battery replacement | Not supported; charging only | Not supported; charging only |
| Aircraft generation referenced by the supplied guidance | M30 series | Matrice 3D series |
| Aircraft battery to identify | Use the exact battery specified for the installed M30-series aircraft; value not stated in the cited documents | DJI Matrice 3D Series Intelligent Flight Battery |
| Published aircraft-battery replacement trigger | Follow the applicable aircraft and dock manual; a universal cycle figure is not stated in the cited documents | Swelling/leakage/damage, 400 cycles, or an error remaining after two standard charge-discharge operations |
| Separate dock backup battery | Use the original Dock’s service documentation | 12 Ah, 12 V lead-acid; more than five hours at 25 °C when fully charged |
The practical rule is simple: never transfer a battery specification or removal sequence from Dock 2 to the original Dock, or vice versa. Read the model-specific manual, identify the aircraft battery by its official designation and use FlightHub 2 to confirm the installed pack after maintenance.
Records and return-to-service checks
Unattended infrastructure benefits from a written battery history. For each aircraft battery, record the installation date, serial number, cycle count, warnings, replacement reason, storage checks and the person who completed the work. A concise record helps distinguish a normal end-of-life replacement from a recurring charging or temperature fault.
- Aircraft and dock model confirmed.
- Battery designation and serial number recorded.
- Cycle count and FlightHub 2 warnings reviewed.
- Battery bay and contacts inspected.
- Battery seated and latched without force.
- Charging completed within the published temperature range.
- No unresolved battery, charging or temperature warning remains.
- Old or damaged pack quarantined for approved discharge and recycling.
- Dock backup-power status checked separately after any outage.
Only after these checks should the aircraft be returned to unattended service. If FlightHub 2 still reports an error after a correct replacement and two standard charge-and-discharge operations, keep the aircraft out of service and escalate through DJI Enterprise support or the organization’s authorized maintenance channel.
