EmuDeck does not publish a ranking of controller brands or models. The best controller for EmuDeck on SteamOS is the one that connects reliably to your Steam Deck, feels familiar for the games you play, and supports any features you need—such as gyro or extra player slots. EmuDeck’s documentation focuses on configuring controllers and Steam Input, not certifying particular hardware.
What makes a controller a good fit?
Choose based on how you play rather than looking for an EmuDeck-approved model. EmuDeck’s help pages explain controller profiles and emulator setup, but do not compare specific controllers.

- Connection and setup: Can you connect the pad to the Steam Deck in your preferred way, and can the emulator select it as an input device? The documentation covers external-controller setup but does not certify specific hardware.
- Button layout: Decide whether you prefer the controller’s own button positions or mapping that matches the original console. EmuDeck Quick Settings offers a choice between those approaches.
- Motion controls: If a game needs gyro, check the instructions for its emulator. The software setup differs by emulator and may require changing Steam Input.
- Multiplayer: Consider how many players you need to support and whether you can identify and reorder controllers if player assignments are wrong.
- Comfort and price: These are sensible purchase considerations, but EmuDeck’s documentation provides no comparative measurements or current prices.
How do you connect and configure an external controller?
- Start in Game Mode for ordinary ROM play. EmuDeck generally recommends Game Mode. If you are in Desktop Mode, hold the Steam Deck’s Start button for three seconds to switch the controller configuration to gamepad mode. See EmuDeck Troubleshooting.
- Connect the controller and select it in the emulator. In Game Mode, connect the pad, then open the relevant game’s controller settings or the emulator’s input settings and choose the connected device. Exact menus vary: EmuDeck’s guides cover Dolphin, Cemu, Yuzu, Ryujinx, RPCS3 and RMG.
- Check the Steam Input profile. EmuDeck provides dedicated profiles for some emulators. If an emulator does not have a dedicated profile, its FAQ recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad; using an unsuitable profile can leave controls unresponsive. See the EmuDeck FAQ.
- Follow the emulator’s gyro instructions if needed. Some guides require disabling Steam Input for the individual game, and may call for a restart. If you want to return to the Deck’s usual controls, follow the guide’s steps to restore Steam Input or the default emulator profile.
- For multiplayer, check player assignments. Configure the additional virtual gamepads in the emulator, then verify the controller order in Game Mode. Reordering may be necessary if a pad’s input is assigned to the wrong player.
Which Steam Input profile should you use?
Use the profile intended for the emulator when one is available. EmuDeck’s FAQ lists profiles for a subset of emulators and recommends Gamepad with Joystick Trackpad when there is no dedicated profile. The appropriate choice is tied to the emulator, so there is no single profile that can be called best for every EmuDeck game.

What changes for gyro and multiplayer?
Gyro and motion input
Gyro configuration is emulator-specific. EmuDeck’s Dolphin, Cemu, Yuzu, Ryujinx, RPCS3 and RMG guides describe external-pad, motion or input settings where applicable. Some gyro setups involve disabling Steam Input for a particular game and restarting; use the relevant emulator guide rather than applying that change globally.
More than one controller
For local multiplayer, the emulator may require additional virtual gamepads to be enabled or assigned. If players’ inputs are mixed up, check the controller order in Game Mode and rearrange it as needed. The exact settings depend on the emulator.

Can you buy a controller specifically recommended for EmuDeck?
Not on the basis of EmuDeck’s published documentation: it does not name a best model or provide model-by-model compatibility testing. Treat any purchase as a choice based on your preferred layout, connection method, comfort, motion-control needs and budget—not as an EmuDeck certification. Consult the manual pages for your emulator’s setup steps before relying on a particular feature.
