Buy Shrek 2: The Game if you want the safest all-round choice. Its 11-level adventure combines platforming, puzzles, mini-games, character-specific Hero Time sections and console multiplayer for up to four players. It works best as a solo, family or co-op purchase when you already own a PlayStation 2, Xbox or GameCube.
Choose Shrek SuperSlam instead when your priority is repeatable local fighting-game matches. The original Xbox game and the GameCube release called Shrek: Extra Large are separate nostalgia-focused platformers, not interchangeable versions of one disc. Platform and edition labels matter throughout the series, especially for PC, handheld and regional listings.

Shrek (2001): the original Xbox platformer
The 2001 Shrek game is a single-player platformer for Xbox. It is the straightforward choice for someone collecting first-film-era Xbox software or wanting a game tied to the original movie rather than a party fighter or co-op adventure.

Do not assume a GameCube listing with the same general premise is the same release. The GameCube counterpart was reworked and sold as Shrek: Extra Large. A seller who writes only “Shrek” without naming the console may be describing the Xbox product, the GameCube game, or an incorrectly catalogued listing.
Shrek: Extra Large (2002): a distinct GameCube release
Shrek: Extra Large is the GameCube version associated with the first game’s era, but it has an altered story and altered levels. Treat it as its own product in a collection and in a buying search. The cartridge or disc label, case artwork and platform logo should all say GameCube; an Xbox disc will not substitute for it.
This is a single-player platformer, so it suits a buyer who values GameCube collecting and first-film nostalgia more than multiplayer variety. Its appeal is edition identity: owning the GameCube-specific game is not the same as owning the original Xbox release.

Shrek 2: The Game is an action-adventure game for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. Activision Publishing’s 2004 release announcement describes 11 levels, a playable team built around Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and Puss-in-Boots, puzzles, mini-games and character-specific Hero Time sections. Console editions support up to four players.
The format gives different kinds of players something to do: a solo player can work through the adventure, a family can share mini-games and a group can use the local multiplayer modes. Activision described it as an expanded version of the film’s world that lets fans revisit movie moments while taking on new adventures.

“The Shrek 2 video game offers fans an expanded version of Shrek’s world where they can relive favorite movie moments and embark upon a host of all new adventures,” Activision Publishing president Kathy Vrabeck said in the 2004 announcement.
Activision listed a suggested retail price of $49.99 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube versions in 2004. That was the original launch price, not a current used-market value; physical copies now vary with condition, completeness, region and demand.
Shrek SuperSlam (2005): the party-fighting specialist
Shrek SuperSlam is an arena fighting game for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and Windows. Its central mechanic is the Slam attack: characters build toward a powerful move, then try to land it while managing a chaotic arena. The game includes Slamageddon, king of the hill, a story mode and multiplayer for up to four players.
It is the better fit when your planned use is short competitive sessions rather than a long platforming campaign. Four controllers and a screen are more important here than which console has the highest historical review number. The period aggregate figures reproduced in the cited reference were 71/100 for Xbox, 70/100 for GameCube and 67/100 for PlayStation 2. Those are 2005-era review aggregates, not modern testing or a guarantee that one port will be in better condition today.
Shrek the Third (2007): a later movie tie-in
Shrek the Third is a separate 2007 game associated with the third film. Editions appeared on Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, PSP, Windows and other platforms. It belongs in a collection focused on that movie’s story, but it is outside the strongest early-console comparison between the original platformers, Shrek 2 and SuperSlam.

Check the year and platform carefully: a listing for Shrek the Third is not another edition of Shrek 2, even if the cover art and movie characters look similar.

Pick by the activity you will actually repeat. If one person may play alone and other people might join occasionally, the adventure structure of Shrek 2 covers more situations. If everyone will sit down specifically to fight, SuperSlam gives the clearer purpose and its multiplayer modes are the reason to buy it.
How the console editions differ
PlayStation 2
PlayStation 2 has console editions of both Shrek 2: The Game and Shrek SuperSlam, as well as Shrek the Third. For a used purchase, verify that the listing names PS2 rather than simply “PlayStation,” and check whether the seller is including a playable disc, a case and a manual. Multiplayer depends on having the required number of compatible controllers and the appropriate console accessories.
Original Xbox
The original Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 and SuperSlam all have Xbox editions. The original Xbox Shrek is the first-film platformer; it is not the GameCube Extra Large release under another name. Xbox is also the platform with the highest listed historical SuperSlam aggregate, 71/100, but that figure reflects period reviews and should not be read as a present-day performance test.
GameCube
GameCube buyers have a particularly important naming issue. The first game’s reworked counterpart is Shrek: Extra Large, while Shrek 2 and SuperSlam use their own GameCube editions. Search for the exact title and inspect the GameCube branding on the disc and case. A listing that says only “Shrek GameCube” may be missing the word “Extra Large” or may be incorrectly identifying another release.

Xbox 360, Wii, PSP and other later systems
Shrek the Third expanded the series to Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, Windows and other editions. Those platforms do not turn it into a version of Shrek 2; they identify a later movie tie-in. If your goal is the classic early-console lineup, start with the platform printed on the box and then confirm the game’s year.
Is the PS2 version of Shrek 2 the same as Xbox?
The PS2 and Xbox releases share the same core game concept and are separate console editions documented by Activision. They are not one universal disc: each requires the matching hardware and regional format. The safest buying language is “Shrek 2: The Game for PS2,” “for Xbox” or “for GameCube,” not an unqualified “Shrek 2.”
Do not pay extra on the assumption that a listing marked Xbox will run on a different system. Confirm the console logo, disc region and condition before purchase. If multiplayer is your reason for buying, check that the console and your available controllers support the number of players you intend to use.

The console comparison does not automatically apply to Windows or Game Boy Advance releases. References describe a separate KnowWonder PC game aimed at younger players and Shrek 2: Team Action, a console-style PC port. Those should be treated as distinct PC products, not as guaranteed equivalents of the PS2, Xbox or GameCube disc.

The Game Boy Advance release is also a separate handheld game. Activision’s 2004 suggested retail price was $29.99 for the PC and Game Boy Advance versions, compared with $49.99 for the PS2, Xbox and GameCube editions. Those were launch recommendations in 2004 and do not establish today’s used prices.

When buying a computer copy, confirm the exact subtitle, operating-system requirements, included disc or code and region. A Windows listing for Shrek 2: Team Action should not be assumed to contain the younger-player KnowWonder game, and neither should be assumed to be identical to a console edition.
Used-copy checklist for any classic Shrek game
- Write down the exact title and platform. Include the year where two games have similar names: Shrek (2001), Shrek: Extra Large (2002), Shrek 2: The Game (2004), Shrek SuperSlam (2005) or Shrek the Third (2007).
- Match the physical format to your hardware. Xbox, PS2, GameCube, Windows and Game Boy Advance releases are separate products. A disc or cartridge from another platform is not a substitute.
- Check region and edition details. Ask for a clear photo of the disc or cartridge label, the case spine and any regional markings. This prevents an incorrectly titled listing from turning into the wrong purchase.
- Inspect condition and completeness. Look for deep scratches, cracked cases, missing manuals and damaged cartridge labels. For disc games, ask whether the disc has been tested if the seller provides that information; do not treat an untested copy as confirmed working.
- Plan the controller setup. Four-player claims matter only if you have the compatible console accessories and enough controllers. For a single-player platformer, controller count is less important than the correct hardware and a readable disc.
- Keep price expectations realistic. The $49.99 and $29.99 figures attached to Shrek 2 were 2004 suggested retail prices. Current stock, authenticity and resale prices depend on the individual listing and are not established by those launch figures.
Should you wait for a Shrek 2 remaster?
GamesRadar+ reported on October 17, 2026 that a deleted Xbox Store listing and trailer appeared to point to an Aspyr Shrek 2 remaster. The report mentioned possible 4K support, improved textures, an enhanced user interface, Photo Mode and Cheat Mode, but gave no confirmed release date or price.
That is an unconfirmed development signal, not a product announcement you can safely use as a purchase plan. If you want to play a physical classic now, buy according to the console and condition guidance above. If you prefer a potential modern release, wait for an official store listing or publisher announcement that confirms availability, platforms, price and release date.
Recommendations by buyer type
For a first classic Shrek purchase
Choose Shrek 2: The Game on the console you already own. Its documented combination of 11 levels, puzzles, mini-games, Hero Time sections and up to four-player play gives a solo buyer and a group the most flexible starting point.
For a family or co-op group
Choose the Shrek 2 edition that matches your console, then verify that you have enough compatible controllers. The game is the broadest fit because its adventure content does not require every session to be a competitive fight.
For a fighting-game night
Choose Shrek SuperSlam for the platform with the controllers you already have. Its Slam attacks, Slamageddon and king-of-the-hill modes are the reason to select it over an adventure game. The historical aggregates favor Xbox narrowly over GameCube and PS2, but the state of your copy and multiplayer setup matters more for a used purchase.
For a collector of first-film games
Buy Shrek for original Xbox or Shrek: Extra Large for GameCube according to the hardware and edition you want to own. They are related releases with different content, so catalog them separately.

Look for the exact Shrek the Third edition for Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP, Windows or another listed platform. Confirm the platform before buying because the title belongs to a later movie tie-in, not the early Shrek 2 lineup.
