For most beginners choosing between these two Canon DSLRs, the Rebel T8i is the more capable learning camera: Canon’s 2020 launch announcement lists a 45-point optical-viewfinder autofocus system, up to 7 fps, a vari-angle touchscreen, wireless connectivity and 4K UHD video. The Rebel T7 is a simpler option if you find a suitable kit at a substantially lower price. These are older DSLR models, so compare the exact body or kit, condition and local availability before buying; Canon’s US listings do not establish worldwide stock.
Which Canon DSLR is best for a beginner?
Choose by the features you will use and the price of the specific camera in front of you—not by an old launch price or a kit listing that may no longer be available.

- Consider the Rebel T7 if you find a complete, compatible kit at a compelling price and want a basic entry into Canon’s EF/EF-S DSLR lens system.
The T8i features below come from Canon’s announcement dated February 12, 2020, and should be treated as launch-era specifications, not evidence of current availability or price. Canon’s support pages are the place to check technical details and manuals for each model: T8i support and T7 support.

When the T8i makes more sense
The T8i is the stronger fit for a beginner who expects to photograph moving subjects, compose from awkward angles, or learn video as well as stills. Its 45-point all cross-type optical-viewfinder AF system and up-to-7-fps burst rate are useful capabilities to weigh for action; they do not guarantee a particular result. The vari-angle touchscreen can make low- or high-angle framing more convenient, while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth add wireless connectivity. Canon also listed Dual Pixel CMOS AF with Eye Detection in Servo for live view and video use.
Canon’s February 12, 2020 announcement gave estimated US launch retail prices of $749.99 for the body and $899.99 for a kit with an EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM lens. Those are historical launch figures only, not current quotes or a guide to today’s used-market value. Check the current price and exactly what is included in the offer. Canon’s T8i announcement

When to consider the T7
The T7 can be a sensible starter if its total price and condition make it a better value for your needs. Canon’s support specifications list a 24.1 MP CMOS sensor and EF/EF-S lens compatibility. That makes it a route into the same broad DSLR lens families used by the T8i, but the kit and card details matter: Canon’s page for the T7 with an EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens says that specific configuration is no longer available or discontinued. That does not prove the T7 model itself is retired. Canon T7 kit listing
Canon’s US DSLR catalog separately lists a T7 Double Zoom kit, but a catalog entry is not a promise that a particular kit is in stock, new, or available in your location. Check the Canon US DSLR catalog and the seller’s exact listing rather than assuming every T7 configuration remains available.

Check lenses and memory cards before buying
Match the lens mount
Both cameras accept Canon EF and EF-S lenses, but Canon excludes EF-M lenses from compatibility. Verify the exact lens version and mount before purchasing. Kit lenses are configuration-specific examples: Canon sold a T7 kit with an EF-S 18-55mm IS II, while the T8i’s 2020 launch kit used an EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM. Neither example confirms present stock.
Choose a card for the exact camera
Both models use SD-family cards, but their speed compatibility differs. Canon lists UHS-I compatibility for the T8i and says the T7 is not compatible with UHS speed class cards. Check the relevant camera manual or support specification before buying a card; do not assume a card’s label alone guarantees compatibility.

What Canon’s support status does—and does not—tell you
Canon says its general policy is to typically retire products after 10 years of life. Canon also says assisted support ends after retirement, though self-service material such as troubleshooting articles, user guides and how-to videos may remain. That policy page does not establish that either the T7 or T8i has been retired; check the model’s current support page and your country’s service options. Canon retired-products policy
