A NEMA L6-30 receptacle is a 30 A, 250 V locking device with two hot conductors and an equipment grounding conductor. It has no neutral terminal. The device rating alone does not determine the right wire size, breaker, or installation method for a particular circuit; those depend on the equipment, site, product instructions, and locally adopted electrical code.
What an L6-30 receptacle is
“L” identifies a locking configuration. An L6-30 is a two-pole, three-wire grounding device rated for up to 250 V and 30 A, according to Schneider Electric’s description of NEMA L6-30. Leviton’s 2620-B is one manufacturer example of an L6-30R receptacle, rated 30 A and 250 V.

The “three-wire” description means two ungrounded (hot) conductors and one equipment grounding conductor. This is not a 120/240 V four-wire configuration. In particular, the grounding contact is not a neutral connection.

Leviton’s terminal chart assigns the L6 configuration’s two hot conductors to the brass terminals and the equipment grounding conductor to the green terminal. There is no neutral terminal. The chart describes terminal function; do not infer the function of conductors already in a box from insulation color alone. Verify the circuit and equipment documentation.

- Green terminal: equipment grounding conductor.
- No neutral terminal: do not connect a neutral or repurpose the grounding terminal as one.
Grounding is a safety function, not an optional substitute for neutral. OSHA’s general-industry rule requires receptacle grounding contacts to connect to the equipment grounding conductor of the supplying circuit. A protective device such as a GFCI does not make that grounding connection unnecessary.
Why the device rating does not specify the whole circuit
A 30 A, 250 V receptacle rating does not, by itself, establish the correct branch-circuit conductor size, conductor type, breaker, or suitability for a particular load. Leviton directs installers to applicable NEC tables—or CEC tables in Canada—for conductor type and size according to the application and load. Local code adoption, amendments, permits, wiring method, enclosure, and installation environment also matter.

Terminal wire acceptance is a product specification, not a branch-circuit design rule. For example, Leviton’s instructions for the covered devices state up to #10 AWG copper or copper-clad wire at the terminals; Legrand lists a 14–10 AWG wire range for its L630R product. Neither fact alone determines the correct conductor for a specific circuit.

Safety checks before any work
Leviton’s 2024 instruction sheet for its 20 A and 30 A flush locking receptacles says to turn off power at the breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring. It also specifies copper or copper-clad wire for the covered device, directs users to applicable code tables for conductor type and size, and says to consult an electrician if any part of the instructions is unclear. These manufacturer directions do not replace a complete safe-work procedure or code review.

- Use the instructions and terminal chart for the exact receptacle model; do not assume all devices use identical connection details or torque values.
- Confirm the circuit, load, conductor material, wiring method, breaker, enclosure, and location are suitable under applicable code.
- Do not work on energized wiring. Leviton’s instruction is to disconnect power and test that it is off.
- If the circuit cannot be positively identified, the wiring or equipment documentation is unclear, or the installation conditions are uncertain, stop and consult a qualified electrician.
Leviton’s sheet also refers users to its torque-value information. Do not guess a terminal torque or connection method; use the exact device documentation.
Code context: workplace rules versus residential installations
OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.304 grounding requirements apply to covered workplaces. Its temporary-wiring provisions impose GFCI requirements for specified construction-like work and, where required GFCI protection is unavailable for the covered receptacles, an assured equipment grounding conductor program. That program includes visual inspections and grounding continuity and correct-terminal tests at specified intervals. These are conditional workplace rules, not a universal statement of residential code requirements.

OSHA’s general-industry wiring-method rules also address grounding conductors, disconnecting ungrounded conductors in covered temporary circuits, and suitability for damp or wet locations. The rules do not settle every residential requirement or local code question. Check the requirements adopted by the authority having jurisdiction for the actual site.

Compare mounting arrangement, terminal compatibility, listing or approval information, environment rating, and model-specific instructions.
