Puppeteer officially supports Chrome and Firefox. It does not mean every release of either browser works with every Puppeteer version: use the browser build paired with your Puppeteer release in the official supported-browser table. Puppeteer’s documentation surfaced as version 25.12.0 on October 3, 2026; browser and runtime details can change.
Which browsers are supported?
The official Puppeteer API identifies its supported browser choices as chrome and firefox. The project’s FAQ says both browser families are supported from Puppeteer v23.0.0 onward. Safari and Microsoft Edge are not named as supported choices in that API type; engine similarity alone does not establish official support.

Which automation protocol does Puppeteer use?
| Browser | Default protocol | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) | Puppeteer continues to support Chrome automation through CDP, including Chrome-specific functionality. |
| Firefox | WebDriver BiDi | Puppeteer’s FAQ describes its WebDriver BiDi support as production-ready for Firefox from v23.0.0 onward. |
| Chrome | WebDriver BiDi | WebDriver BiDi can also automate Chrome; CDP remains the default. |
These protocol defaults and the v23.0.0 support statement are documented in the Puppeteer FAQ. Protocol support does not remove the need to match browser builds to the Puppeteer version.

Puppeteer releases are paired with specific browser releases to keep their underlying CDP and WebDriver BiDi implementations compatible. Check the supported-browser table for the Puppeteer version you actually use rather than assuming that the newest Chrome or Firefox will work.

- Identify your installed Puppeteer version from your package manifest or with
npm ls puppeteer. - Find that release in the official browser compatibility table and use its listed browser build.
- If your exact Puppeteer version is not listed, Puppeteer’s table instructs you to use the browser version shown for the immediately preceding Puppeteer entry. This is a documented lookup rule, not a guarantee for arbitrary browser versions.
- Recheck the table when upgrading Puppeteer or changing browser builds; the mapping can change between releases.
Does Puppeteer use Chrome, Chromium, or Chrome for Testing?
The supported browser family is documented as Chrome, but the browser binary Puppeteer downloads has changed over time. From Puppeteer v20.0.0 onward, it downloads and works with Chrome for Testing. Before v20, it downloaded and worked with Chromium. Consult the supported-browser documentation for current terminology and release pairings.
What does headless mode mean?
The documentation says regular headful and headless Chrome share a code path. The older, separate headless implementation is the chrome-headless-shell program; choose it with headless: 'shell'. This distinction matters when following older examples or when your automation depends on behavior specific to that separate program.
What runtime and operating-system requirements apply?
The current system requirements page lists Node.js 22.12 or newer, and TypeScript 5.0.1 or newer if using TypeScript. Its Chrome for Testing platform list includes Windows x64; macOS x64 and arm64; Debian/Ubuntu Linux x64 and arm64; and openSUSE/Fedora Linux x64 and arm64. Linux may also require system packages.

Does Puppeteer always download a browser?
No. Puppeteer configuration sets Chrome as the default browser and lets you select the default supported browser. It also provides skipDownload options, so support for a browser family does not imply that its binary is downloaded in every setup. See the configuration guide for the current setting names and behavior.

When is Puppeteer the right browser-automation choice?
Browser compatibility is only one part of a framework decision. Compare the exact browser/version matrix, protocol and API coverage, language bindings, and orchestration needs. Puppeteer is a Node.js library; its FAQ notes that Selenium offers broader language bindings and that Selenium Grid-style large-scale orchestration is outside Puppeteer’s scope. That difference does not negate Puppeteer’s documented Chrome and Firefox support.
