Visual testing improves software quality by comparing rendered screens with approved baselines, helping teams catch interface regressions—such as missing images, shifted layouts, overlapping elements, or incorrect typography—that functional assertions may miss. It complements functional and accessibility testing; it does not replace either.
What visual testing checks
A visual test captures an interface at a meaningful point in a test, then compares the resulting image with a previously accepted baseline. The comparison surfaces visible changes for review. As Applitools’ visual UI testing documentation puts it, “Visual testing is a type of regression testing that ensures previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly.”
A difference is not automatically a defect. A planned redesign may produce an expected change; a missing image or unintended overlap may be a regression. A reviewer decides whether to correct the implementation or accept the updated screen as the new baseline.
What it adds to software quality
Behavior-focused tests can pass even when the rendered interface is visibly broken. A button may still trigger its handler while sitting beneath another element; a page may load while an image is missing or text uses the wrong font. Visual comparisons add evidence about what users actually see, rather than only whether a code path or interaction completed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Finds presentation regressions: comparisons can flag layout shifts, overlapping elements, missing imagery, and typography changes.
- Reviews the result at important states: capturing key screens after relevant interactions helps teams assess the appearance of particular flows, not only the initial page.
- Supports deliberate UI changes: baseline review distinguishes an intentional design update from an unexpected change, provided the change is reviewed rather than accepted automatically.
These benefits are practical, not a guarantee of a specific quality gain. The available evidence does not establish an independently validated percentage improvement in overall software quality. Percy’s vendor article discusses visual defects, but its cited “up to about 50%” figure is not sufficiently validated here to treat as a general statistic.
How to add visual checks to a test workflow
The exact implementation depends on the framework or service. Applitools’ documented workflow is a useful model: capture important UI states, compare them with stored baselines, inspect differences, and accept or reject the new appearance. Framework-native screenshot assertions and dedicated visual-testing services can implement that pattern differently.

- Choose meaningful checkpoints. Identify important pages and states, such as a completed form or an opened navigation menu. A screenshot is useful only when the test has reached the intended state.
- Make capture conditions repeatable. Keep the browser, viewport, device scale, data, and relevant application state consistent. Where content changes on each run, control it or account for it before comparison.
- Capture and compare. Save a reference image as the baseline, then compare future captures against it. Review the tool’s comparison behavior and any noise-filtering options rather than assuming all tools treat image differences alike.
- Review each meaningful difference. Investigate whether it represents a bug or a planned change. Fix defects; update the baseline only when the new appearance is intentional and approved.
- Run checks in the development workflow. Connect the checks to the team’s test process or CI so relevant changes can be reviewed before release. Decide who owns baseline approvals and how unresolved differences block or inform a release.
Start with high-value screens and stable states. Expanding coverage before capture conditions and review ownership are reliable can create more noise and maintenance work than useful feedback.
Visual testing versus functional and accessibility testing
| Test type | Primary question | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|
| Functional testing | Does the specified behavior work? | A visibly broken layout or incorrect typography when behavior assertions still pass. |
| Visual testing | Does the rendered screen differ unexpectedly from an accepted appearance? | Whether controls work correctly, or whether the interface is accessible to people using assistive technology. |
| Accessibility testing | Can people with different access needs use the interface, and are relevant accessibility requirements met? | No single automated scan establishes accessibility; many issues require human assessment and user feedback. |
Accessibility concerns can include text contrast and whether controls have labels that assistive technology can identify. A matching screenshot does not prove these properties. Playwright’s accessibility testing guidance explains that automated scans catch some common issues, while many require manual evaluation; it recommends combining automated checks, manual assessment, and inclusive user testing.

Keep screenshot comparisons dependable
Comparisons are only as useful as the consistency of the captures and the quality of review. Content that changes between runs, browser or device differences, font rendering, and antialiasing can produce visual differences unrelated to a product defect.
- Dynamic content: stabilize changing data or choose a capture state where it does not obscure the UI being checked.
- Browser and device variation: define which browsers, operating systems, viewport sizes, and device configurations matter. A baseline for one configuration does not establish identical appearance everywhere.
- Rendering noise: investigate small differences before treating them as regressions. Some vendors describe noise-filtering capabilities, but that is a product capability claim, not proof that every difference will be classified correctly.
- Baseline upkeep: review intended design changes carefully. Automatic acceptance can hide defects, while frequent unnecessary baseline changes make later comparisons less trustworthy.
Visual test suites also require maintenance. A 2016 empirical study addresses maintenance of automated visual GUI test suites and notes that empirical information on automation maintenance costs was limited; it does not provide a directly usable general cost or ROI figure in the available abstract: Maintenance of Automated Test Suites in Industry: An Empirical study on Visual GUI Testing.

Choosing an approach or tool
Playwright is a browser automation framework relevant to framework-based checks. Applitools describes Eyes SDK integrations with Playwright and other frameworks, while Percy describes visual automation as part of a testing strategy. Those examples illustrate categories, not a neutral ranking of products.
For screenshot capture outside an existing test-runner workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture. Only clean shots are billed, and responses report page verdict and billing status. It is useful for capture and agent workflows, but it is not a substitute for baseline review inside a visual-testing process.
