page.keyboard.type(text, options) accepts one documented option: delay, the number of milliseconds to wait between each character’s keydown and keyup events. Its default is 0, so typing happens without an added delay. Use press() for named keys such as Control or ArrowDown; type() is for text.
What options does Puppeteer Keyboard.type() accept?
The Puppeteer 25.9.0 method reference documents Keyboard.type(text, options?) with a single option:
| Option | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
delay |
Time to wait in milliseconds between keydown and keyup for each character. | 0 |
For example, the official method reference shows immediate typing followed by typing with a 100-millisecond delay:
await page.keyboard.type('Hello'); // Types instantly
await page.keyboard.type('World', { delay: 100 }); // Types slower, like a user
The 100 milliseconds is an example value, not a recommended setting or evidence of a typical human typing speed. A delay changes timing; it does not change the characters or keys sent.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What events does type() generate?
Puppeteer describes Keyboard.type() as its high-level API for raw characters. For each character, it generates keydown, keypress/input, and keyup events on the page. The method reference describes delay as the wait between keydown and keyup.
A held modifier does not change text passed to type(). For example, holding Shift will not capitalize a lowercase string supplied to this method.

Use type(), press(), or lower-level keyboard methods?
| Method | Use it for | Event and modifier behavior | Documented delay option |
|---|---|---|---|
type(text, options?) |
Typing raw characters. | Generates per-character key events; modifiers do not affect the supplied text. | Yes: delay, default 0. |
press(key, options?) |
Pressing a named key, such as Control or ArrowDown. | Modifiers affect this method. | The cited method guidance directs users here for special keys; it does not establish a delay option for this comparison. |
down(key) and up(key) |
Manually controlling key-down and key-up state. | Modifiers affect these methods; you control the down/up sequence. | Not listed in the cited class reference as a type delay option. |
sendCharacter(char) |
Sending character input without keydown or keyup. | Does not generate those key events; modifiers do not affect it. | Not listed in the cited class reference as a type delay option. |
Choose the method according to the browser interaction you need: type() for text, press() for a named key, or down()/up() and sendCharacter() when you need finer control over the event sequence.
Typing into a page element
The page-level Page.type(selector, text, options?) reference also lists delay with a default of 0. The method reference labels its documentation Puppeteer 25.9.0, while the page reference labels itself 25.10.0; those are the versions identified by the respective pages, not a claim that both pages describe one synchronized release.

await page.type('#email', '[email protected]', { delay: 50 });
This uses the page-level convenience method to type into the element selected by #email. If you are already working with a focused element or need the keyboard interface directly, use page.keyboard.type().
Troubleshooting typing behavior
- A special key is being treated like text: use
page.keyboard.press('ArrowDown')or another named key rather than passing it totype(). - Shift does not capitalize the typed string: this is expected; modifiers do not affect
type(). Supply the desired characters directly, or use key methods when the interaction specifically requires modifier key events. - Typing is too fast for the interaction: set a nonzero
delayin milliseconds. The documented default is zero; no particular nonzero value is guaranteed to mimic human input or avoid detection. - You need a character without keydown/keyup: use
sendCharacter(), whose event behavior differs fromtype(). - You need to hold or release a key explicitly: use
down()andup()to control that sequence.
