Apple does not list the 1st- or 2nd-generation Apple Pencil as compatible with either M4 model. The right choice depends mainly on whether you want Pencil Pro’s extra features and magnetic charging or are comfortable pairing and charging the USB-C model by cable.

Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility guide distinguishes the M4 generation from earlier iPad Pro models. Second-generation Pencil compatibility includes earlier Pros—up to the 11-inch 4th generation and 12.9-inch 6th generation—but not the M4 models. If a listing or seller describes your tablet only as “iPad Pro,” verify its generation and size before buying a Pencil.

Which Apple Pencil should you choose?
Choose Apple Pencil Pro if you want its added features
Pencil Pro is the fit if squeeze, haptic feedback, double tap, or Find My support matters to you. It also magnetically attaches, pairs, and charges on the M4 iPad Pro, rather than requiring a cable for pairing and charging.
Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for core Pencil tasks
Apple describes the USB-C model for note-taking, sketching, and document markup. It works with both M4 iPad Pro sizes and supports hover, but pairing and charging require a USB-C charge cable. Choose it if those core tasks meet your needs and cable-based charging is acceptable. Compatibility information alone does not establish which model offers better real-world performance or value for every user.

Use the listed minimum software versions: iPadOS 17.5 or later for Apple Pencil Pro, and iPadOS 17.1.1 or later for Apple Pencil (USB-C). If you are unsure which iPad Pro you have, check its model name in Settings or confirm the generation against Apple’s compatibility guide before purchasing.
