Pack a lightweight rain poncho or rain jacket, comfortable footwear suited to the ground, and dry spare socks or clothes. If you’re camping, add protection for your tent and sealed storage for clothing and gear. Check your festival’s current bag and item rules before you leave: policies differ, and some events prohibit umbrellas.
Rainy festival packing list
Wear or carry on the festival grounds
- A poncho or rain jacket: A lightweight poncho is easy to stash in a day bag and can cover more of your clothing; a jacket may be more comfortable to wear and useful beyond the festival. Both are recommended options in REI’s festival camping checklist, and Hinterland’s 2026 festival guidance names ponchos.
- Footwear suited to the terrain: Choose comfortable, supportive shoes for a long day on your feet. Waterproof boots are a practical option if rain, mud, or standing water is likely, but they are not necessary for every festival.
- Dry socks and a change of clothes: These are especially useful for multi-day trips or camping. The cited packing guidance recommends socks and wet-weather preparation, but it does not prescribe a universal quantity; pack according to the trip and your available storage.
- A permitted day bag: Check the event’s current rules for bag size, material, and pockets before choosing one. A bag that is acceptable at one festival may not meet another’s entry policy.
If you’re camping
- Waterproof shelter protection: Bring a suitable tarp or tent rain protection. Hinterland’s 2026 camping tips recommend waterproof tarps.
- Sealed storage: Use sealed bags or waterproof containers to keep spare clothes and belongings dry, as Hinterland advises.
- Wet-ground footwear: Consider rain boots if the campsite is likely to be muddy or waterlogged.
- A way to move your gear: If the campsite is far from parking, plan how you’ll carry equipment. Hinterland notes that cars are not beside tents in its campground and suggests a wagon there; check the rules before taking a wagon into any festival venue.
Choose gear for your conditions

Check the festival’s current rules before packing
Do not assume an item is allowed because another festival permits it. Official policies illustrate the differences: Hinterland’s 2026 information permits empty refillable bottles and bags no larger than 18 x 13 x 8.5 inches at its festival grounds, prohibits umbrellas, and sets separate campground rules. Riot Fest’s FAQ lists raincoats and ponchos as allowed and warns that its list may change. BottleRock’s festival information specifies a clear-bag rule, prohibits umbrellas, and says its policy is subject to change. These are examples for those events, not rules that apply everywhere.

Revisit the organizer’s official allowed- and prohibited-item page and bag policy close to departure. Check the local forecast, overnight low, expected ground conditions, and whether you’ll be camping. If you need to bring medication or medical equipment, review the event’s specific requirements too; for example, Gov Ball’s policy, marked last updated August 27, 2026, includes medication requirements.
