There is no defensible all-time top five in the available price records: a ranking changes depending on whether it compares launch prices, maximum upgrade configurations, inflation-adjusted dollars, or accessories such as displays and wheels. The figures that can be documented do show how far apart those measures are—and why the 2019 Mac Pro’s reported maximum configuration should not be treated as a standard price.
Why a single “most expensive” ranking is misleading
A computer’s original base price is not comparable to its most expensive build-to-order configuration. Nor is a nominal price from one year directly comparable to a price from another era without an inflation method. Accessories and displays add another variable: they may be sold separately rather than included in the computer’s price.

The figures below therefore are historical examples, not a ranked top five. They distinguish Apple’s own published prices from later secondary reports, and identify what each figure represents.

Documented Apple computer prices
| Computer and year | Reported price | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Lisa, 1983 | $9,995 | Macworld reports this as the Lisa’s launch price. It is a secondary historical figure, not corroborated here by a primary Apple source. Macworld |
| Power Mac G4 and Macintosh Server G4, February 2000 | Power Mac G4: $1,599–$3,499; Macintosh Server G4: $2,999–$4,199 | Apple listed these configuration ranges. The Server G4 was a separate product line, not simply another consumer desktop configuration. Apple Newsroom |
| Power Mac G4 Cube, July 2000 | $1,799 for 450 MHz; $2,299 for 500 MHz | Apple announced both prices and said the 500 MHz configuration would be available through the Apple Store. These are two launch configurations, not a claim that the Cube ranked among the five most expensive Apple computers ever. Apple Newsroom |
| Mac Pro, 2019 | $52,599 including $400 wheels; $52,748 excluding a display | These are different secondary reports of a maximum configuration, with differing option or accessory assumptions—not Apple-published standard retail prices. MacRumors reported the first total; Macworld reported the second. MacRumors; Macworld |
What the 2019 Mac Pro figures mean
Apple’s June 3, 2019 announcement supports the machine’s high-end processor and memory capabilities, but it does not state either of the reported checkout totals above. Apple described the Mac Pro as “a completely redesigned, breakthrough workstation for pros who push the limits of what a Mac can do”—promotional language from the company’s product announcement, not an independent assessment. The distinction matters: a maximum configured workstation total depends on which options are selected and whether accessories are counted. It should not be presented as the launch price of every 2019 Mac Pro, or as a settled, directly comparable price for the computer alone.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- The Lisa’s reported $9,995 launch price is higher than the cited nominal launch prices for the G4 systems, but it is supported here by secondary historical reporting.
- The cited G4 prices are Apple-published 2000 configuration prices; they do not establish an all-time ranking.
- The reported 2019 Mac Pro totals show how expensive an extensively configured system could become, but they are secondary reconstructions with different assumptions.
- No inflation-adjusted comparisons are included, because the figures available do not specify an inflation index or calculation date.
As a result, these records are not enough to identify the five most expensive Apple computers of all time under a consistent rule. A reliable top-five list would require a defined price method and dated, comparable evidence for every candidate.
