What makes an M.2 SSD compatible with PS5?
Sony’s compatibility requirements are the starting point—not a product’s “gaming” label. The drive must use the right interface, fall within the supported capacity and length ranges, meet the physical clearance limits, and have an effective cooling structure.

Check dimensions for the SSD with its cooling structure installed. Sony’s maximum overall dimensions are 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick; the thickness allowance is divided above and below the SSD board. A drive can be the right M.2 length and still be too wide or too thick once its heatsink is included.

Sony supports both single-sided and double-sided drives, but heatsinks vary. Compare the manufacturer’s dimensions for the exact SKU with Sony’s limits rather than assuming that a heatsink marketed for PS5 will fit every console model or drive configuration.
Does a faster SSD make PS5 games load faster?
The 5,500 MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential read speed, not a promise of a specific loading-time improvement. Sony notes that some games may not perform exactly as they do on the internal SSD, even when the M.2 drive exceeds that speed.

- Turn off the console and follow Sony’s model-specific preparation and safety instructions.
- Remove the expansion-slot cover, then adjust the supplied spacer to match the SSD’s length.
- Insert the SSD into the connector, lower it into place, and secure it as directed in the guide.
- Replace the slot cover and reassemble the console according to the instructions for your model.
- Start the console. With a newly installed SSD, follow the on-screen formatting guide before using the drive.
