HelloTalk is the better fit if you want friendship to grow through language practice and may enjoy text, voice, video, or group conversations. InterPals is a stronger fit for pen-pal-style correspondence and searching by country, language, or interests. These are recommendations based on each service’s stated features, not a hands-on ranking. Neither app can guarantee that a match will become a lasting friendship.
How to choose between HelloTalk and InterPals
| If you prefer… | Consider… | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Practicing a language while meeting people | HelloTalk | It describes partner discovery by native language and city, reciprocal language practice, messaging, voice and video, group audio rooms, livestreams, and community posts. HelloTalk’s official product page lists those formats and tools. |
| Slower written exchanges or pen pals | InterPals | It presents pen pals and language partners as core uses and says members can search by country, language, or interests. Its official site says profile creation, searching, and messaging are free. |
| Primarily finding local in-person events | Not established here | The available official information for these two services does not establish either as the best choice for event-based meetups. |
Why HelloTalk suits language-centered friendships
HelloTalk is organized around reciprocal language practice: you can look for people whose language strengths complement yours, then use the shared learning goal to start a conversation. Its official product page describes text, voice, and video chat, plus Voicerooms, livestreams, and community posts. It also lists translation, pronunciation, transliteration, and correction tools, which can help keep an exchange moving when you do not yet share a fluent language.

HelloTalk says users can search for partners by native language and city. Its language-exchange feature page also advertises ratings, verified profiles, one-tap blocking and reporting, and a 24/7 moderation team. These are HelloTalk’s stated features, not independent evidence that every match is genuine or that unwanted contact is eliminated. The page also lists certified teachers for people seeking structured instruction rather than peer conversation.

InterPals is built around written correspondence and open-ended cultural exchange. It defines a pen pal as “a friend you write to regularly, usually in another country,” and says users can search profiles by country, language, or interests. That slower, message-led format may suit someone who prefers to think through a reply rather than join a live call.

InterPals says creating a profile, searching, and messaging are free. Its official page also displays claims of 8.5+ million users and connections in 180+ countries, but does not date those audience figures; they should be read as the platform’s own undated counts, not as independently verified current activity.
What the audience numbers do—and don’t—tell you
HelloTalk’s official page displays 70M+ language learners, 200+ countries and regions, and 260+ languages. The page does not date these figures, so they do not establish current active-user volume or prove that HelloTalk leads to more friendships. InterPals’ displayed 8.5+ million users and 180+ countries are likewise undated platform claims. HelloTalk and InterPals present these figures themselves; there is no independently dated comparison here of response rates, lasting friendships, or safety outcomes.

Use either service with sensible boundaries
Both services facilitate contact; neither can ensure that a person is sincere or that an online conversation will become a friendship. InterPals says contact details remain private unless a user chooses to share them. It describes blocking and reporting, and says automated systems act on reports around the clock. HelloTalk similarly advertises block/report controls and moderation. Those are platform descriptions, not an independent safety audit.
