To change an Ethernet adapter’s Speed & Duplex setting in Windows 11, open the adapter’s properties, choose Configure, then select Advanced and Speed & Duplex. For most setups, leave the setting on Auto Negotiation: the adapter and the connected switch, router, or other device need to agree on the link mode.
Find the Ethernet adapter’s Speed & Duplex property
Speed & Duplex is a driver property for a wired Ethernet adapter. It is separate from Windows network settings such as IP assignment or the network profile. The exact labels and available options depend on the adapter and its driver.

- Open the adapter list. Press Windows+R, enter
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. Alternatively, start at Start > Settings > Network & internet and look for the Ethernet adapter’s configuration controls. Microsoft’s overview of Windows network settings is at Essential Network Settings and Tasks in Windows. - Open the Ethernet connection’s properties. In the adapter list, right-click the Ethernet connection and choose Properties.
- Open its driver settings. Choose Configure, then select the Advanced tab.
- Select the property. In the property list, select Speed & Duplex. The label may differ slightly or be localized, and some adapters do not expose this property.
- Choose a mode and apply it. Select Auto Negotiation as the normal starting point, then choose OK. Only select a fixed mode when troubleshooting a specific compatibility issue and when both ends of the connection support compatible settings.
The Configure > Advanced route is common Windows support guidance, not a guarantee that every driver presents the same controls. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion Ethernet Link Speed at 10 Mbps.

What speed and duplex mean
Speed is the Ethernet link rate agreed between your adapter and the device at the other end of the link, such as a router or switch. Duplex describes whether the link can send and receive traffic simultaneously (full duplex) or handles traffic in one direction at a time (half duplex). Microsoft’s driver documentation treats transmit speed, receive speed, duplex, and pause-function negotiation as distinct properties: NET_ADAPTER_AUTO_NEGOTIATION_FLAGS enumeration.

The setting’s menu is determined by the adapter and driver. Some show only Auto Negotiation; others list fixed speed-and-duplex combinations. Do not assume that a particular option will appear on every Windows 11 PC.
Why Auto Negotiation is usually the right choice
Auto Negotiation lets the adapter and its link partner agree on a mode they both support. Intel’s guidance for its Ethernet adapters states, “Auto Negotiation is the correct setting for Gigabit speeds in Speed & Duplex for Intel Networking Adapters.” Intel also notes that some drivers do not offer a 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex choice; that missing option does not itself mean the adapter cannot establish a gigabit link. With compatible equipment, Auto Negotiation can produce a 1.0 Gbps link. See Intel Ethernet Adapter Limited at 100 Mbps.

A fixed mode is best treated as a diagnostic or compatibility setting, not a way to make an otherwise limited connection faster. The adapter cannot negotiate a rate the connected device does not support, and forcing incompatible settings can make the link unstable or cause it to drop. If a forced mode makes matters worse, return the property to Auto Negotiation.

- Check the physical connection. Make sure the cable is firmly connected at both ends. If you have one available, try a known-working Ethernet cable.
- Compare with another computer. Test the same network using another PC, if possible. This can help distinguish a problem on this computer from one involving the router, service, or network adapter.
- Check both ends of the link. Confirm that the adapter and the connected switch or router port support compatible speeds and settings. A Windows adapter’s choice alone cannot determine the negotiated link rate.
- Check driver-specific options. If Speed & Duplex is absent or behaves unexpectedly, consult the PC or adapter maker’s driver support. The absence of a 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex menu item is not, by itself, proof of a fault.
- Run Windows’ network troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends the Network and Internet troubleshooter as an initial diagnostic for Windows 11 Ethernet problems. Its guidance also covers cable checks and testing with another PC: Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.
Link speed is not internet speed
The Ethernet link rate describes the connection between your computer and its neighboring network device. It is not a measurement of internet throughput. After applying a setting, check whether Windows reports a stable Ethernet link, then assess internet performance separately. A faster link-rate label does not guarantee faster internet service.
