First identify which prompt Windows is showing: an administrator approval or credential request is different from a camera or location permission prompt. For User Account Control (UAC), check the signed-in account and review the notification level at Control Panel > System and Security > Change User Account Control settings. Microsoft identifies “Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer” as the default and cautions against “Never notify.”
Identify the prompt before changing settings
A UAC prompt appears when an action needs administrator-level permissions. It is a security confirmation, not proof by itself that Windows is malfunctioning. Read the dialog’s wording: a request to approve changes or enter administrator credentials points to elevation; a prompt for camera, location, or another device capability is an app privacy permission instead.

Windows’ app privacy controls are under Settings > Privacy & security. They do not list every desktop app that may have broad access to system resources, so not every permission-style dialog is controlled from one Settings page. See Microsoft’s App permissions guidance.
Check whether your account is an administrator
A standard account can use the computer but may need an administrator to approve tasks such as installing software or changing system settings. If a dialog asks for another account’s credentials, the signed-in account may be standard, or the task may require approval from an administrator.

- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Find the account and select Change account type to inspect its role.
- If approval or credentials from another administrator are required, ask the device owner or administrator to approve the specific task.
Microsoft says administrator accounts can change settings, install software, and access files, and recommends limiting the number of administrators. Do not switch an account to administrator simply to eliminate prompts. See Manage User Accounts in Windows.
Review UAC’s notification level
Open Control Panel > System and Security > Change User Account Control settings. The slider changes when Windows notifies you; it does not turn an ordinary account into an administrator or make an action that requires elevation safe to approve.

| Setting | When it notifies | Effect on other work | Security consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always notify | Apps attempting changes and user-initiated Windows setting changes | Dims the desktop and waits for a response | Most notification coverage of these choices |
| Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default) | Apps attempting changes, not changes you make to Windows settings | Dims the desktop and waits for a response | Microsoft’s stated default |
| Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop) | Similar notification scope to the default | Does not dim the desktop or wait in the same way | Microsoft recommends this only if dimming takes a long time |
| Never notify | Does not notify for program or user-initiated changes | No UAC notification to respond to | Microsoft says this is not recommended because of security concerns |
Microsoft describes UAC’s purpose and choices in User Account Control settings. If the slider is already at the default and one particular program prompts at every launch, note the program and whether it is expected to need elevated permissions. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal cause or fix for every repeatedly prompting app.

Know the difference between a sign-in and an elevation request
Signing in to Windows and approving an elevated action are separate processes. Windows sign-in can use a password, PIN, or Windows Hello; a UAC dialog may ask an administrator to approve a task or provide credentials. Check whose account the dialog requests and whether your current account has administrator rights. Microsoft explains account access in User Account Access in Windows.

Handle work or school devices through IT
On a device managed by an employer or school, an organization may control account settings or UAC behavior. If a control is unavailable, or prompts appear unexpectedly, contact the organization’s IT administrator instead of trying to override its policy. Microsoft notes that work or school account setup can vary with organizational management and rollout in its Add Your Work or School Account to a Windows Device guidance.
