The key is choosing a structure that matches the content: use field groups for individual values, Repeaters for recurring rows, Options Pages for shared sitewide settings, and ACF Blocks for editor-inserted components. ACF supplies the editing and data tools; developers still need to build the templates or rendering logic that make a site dynamic.
What ACF adds to a WordPress site
ACF adds fields to WordPress editing screens so content can be entered in a consistent, structured way. A field might hold a subtitle, a location, or a call-to-action label. A template or component can then retrieve that value and decide how to display it. ACF’s documentation covers field types and APIs for working with those values: ACF Resources and Documentation.

This separates content from presentation. Editors enter information into defined fields instead of recreating the same layout in free-form text, while developers control how the information appears. ACF does not, by itself, generate a complete dynamic site: the WordPress theme, templates, blocks, or other code must use the stored values.
Choose the structure that matches the content
Field groups for structured values
A field group is a sensible starting point when an editing screen needs a set of related values. For example, a staff profile might have a role, location, and short biography. The group gives editors a predictable form; theme code or a component retrieves the fields and renders them.
#1 Best Overall
Repeaters for variable lists
Use a Repeater when an editor needs to add any number of similarly structured items, such as team members, slides, or call-to-action tiles. Each row contains the same subfields, making the data easier to enter and render consistently. ACF documents the Repeater field and its behavior at Repeater.
Repeater pagination is an admin editing aid: it changes how rows are loaded in the editing interface, not the results returned to a front-end template or the REST API. ACF also cautions that pagination offers little performance benefit inside ACF Blocks, where block data is stored in post content and the DOM.
Rank #2
Options Pages for shared site settings
Use an Options Page for values that should be managed centrally and reused across multiple pages, such as header or footer content. ACF stores Options Page data in the WordPress wp_options table. If field groups are shared across Options Pages, those pages share their field values too, so make sure that is the intended behavior. See ACF’s Options Page documentation.
ACF Blocks for editor-inserted components
When editors should be able to insert a bespoke component into a page, an ACF Block can provide that component within the WordPress block editor. ACF Blocks are registered through WordPress’s block registration system, using register_block_type() and a block.json configuration. Their output is rendered on the server with PHP, using a template or callback; a block can use ACF fields, but it can also render post data without its own field group.
Rank #3
ACF Blocks support InnerBlocks and block context, allowing a parent block to pass data to child blocks. ACF documents the registration and rendering model in its ACF Blocks guide and ACF Blocks key concepts. ACF Blocks are a PRO feature, and the basic PHP workflow does not require JavaScript. The PHP template or callback remains responsible for the HTML the site displays.
How to plan a dynamic implementation
- Define the content editors need to manage. List individual values, repeatable lists, global settings, and page components separately. Avoid choosing a field type just because it is available; choose it because it represents the content accurately.
- Assign each kind of content to an appropriate structure. Use a field group for related values on an editing screen, a Repeater for recurring rows, an Options Page for shared site settings, or an ACF Block for a component editors insert into content.
- Plan how the data will be rendered. Decide which theme template, PHP callback, or block template will retrieve the fields and produce the markup. Consider where a value is stored and whether it is local to a post or shared sitewide.
- Test the editor workflow and the output. Confirm that editors can enter and update the intended content, that optional or missing values do not produce broken layouts, and that lists and blocks render as expected on the front end.
Block Bindings: connect a field to a core block
Block Bindings can connect a WordPress core block attribute directly to an ACF field, rather than requiring every presentation choice to be implemented as a custom ACF Block. This is a separate, version-dependent option, not a universal way to bind every ACF field. ACF’s documentation, last updated May 13, 2026, specifies ACF PRO 6.8.1 or later, WordPress 6.7 or later, and an enabled ACF datastore. Check the Block Bindings documentation and the versions installed on the site before relying on it.
Rank #4
Some complex or multi-value fields cannot be bound as a whole. ACF lists Repeater, Flexible Content, Gallery, whole Group, Relationship, multi-value Post Object, and Checkbox among unsupported whole-field bindings. For those structures, use a rendering approach that handles their data shape rather than assuming a core block can consume the entire field directly.

What ACF PRO adds—and what it does not
ACF PRO includes advanced field types such as Repeater, Flexible Content, Clone, and Gallery, as well as Options Pages and ACF Blocks. These features expand the ways a site can model and present content, but they do not replace the work of designing a data model, building templates, or deciding how the editor experience should work. ACF describes its audience as WordPress developers and notes that PHP and basic WordPress concepts are needed to get the most from the plugin; see its frequently asked questions.
Best Value
ACF Blocks V3 documentation describes compatibility with WordPress/Gutenberg blocks v3 and changes to the editing and validation experience. Because those behaviors are tied to specific releases, consult the ACF Blocks V3 documentation and verify the installed WordPress and ACF versions before depending on a version-specific editing behavior.
