Google controls several protections centrally, so you do not need to find a separate switch for every feature. Also review optional Intrusion Logging, the Security & privacy overview, and Theft protection—while remembering that Android Device protection is separate from Google Account Advanced Protection.
Confirm Android Device protection is on and setup is complete
Open Settings > Security & privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. On some devices, the route is Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection. Check that Device protection is on. Setup requires a screen lock and may require a restart; if you chose Restart later, return to the Advanced Protection page and restart the device. Google describes the setup and screen-lock behavior in its Android Advanced Protection help page.

Keep the screen lock in place. Google warns that if you remove it after enabling Device protection, the program remains active, but some protections might not work optimally and a warning appears.
Know which protections are managed for you
The Advanced Protection page summarizes protections that may be managed when Device protection is enabled. It is not a checklist of independent switches that every Android phone exposes. Depending on the device and region, Google lists:

- Google Play Protect: scanning cannot be turned off while Device protection is on.
- Install and update safeguards: blocking new installs and updates from unknown sources.
- Accessibility restrictions intended to limit abuse.
- Device-safety features: Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Inactivity Reboot, USB Protection, Failed Authentication Lock, and limits on Watch Unlock.
- Automatic Call Screen: availability depends on region.
Which features appear or work can depend on Android version, manufacturer, model, and location. For example, Google documents USB Protection for Pixel 6 and later; it blocks a new USB data connection while the screen is locked, but not a connection initiated while the phone is unlocked. Google also notes that effectiveness can vary with the manufacturer’s USB implementation. See Google’s USB Protection details.
On Android 16, the Advanced Protection page can also show Apps that checked for Device protection. That view is not documented for earlier Android versions.

Check Chrome’s Advanced Protection status
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Android Advanced Protection is on. Treat this page as a status and behavior check; Android Device protection is the control point. Google says the mode controls these Chrome behaviors:

- Android Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection.
- JavaScript optimization and security: JavaScript optimizations are off under this mode.
- WebGPU: Google’s overview says it is turned off.

Choose whether to enable Intrusion Logging
Intrusion Logging is optional and is offered during setup. It records device and network activity, including apps running, to help a trusted expert investigate suspected compromise. Google says the logs are end-to-end encrypted and kept on Google servers for 12 months, then automatically deleted. If you download and decrypt a log, protecting that copy becomes your responsibility. Details are in Google’s Intrusion Logging help page.
Consider whether the diagnostic benefit fits your privacy needs before enabling it. Google says Intrusion Logging does not distinguish Chrome Incognito network events. If you are concerned about DNS-event completeness, consult Google’s Secure DNS or Private DNS troubleshooting directions before changing those settings; changing Secure DNS casually can affect what is captured.

Review the Security & privacy overview
Open the device’s Security & privacy overview and address any alerts it shows. Useful areas to review include app-security warnings, device lock, account security, system updates, device-finder information, privacy permissions, and lock-screen notifications. The exact layout varies: Google says Android 13 and later generally combines Security and Privacy, while Android 12 and earlier may show separate sections. Check Theft protection separately
Go to Google > All services > Personal and device safety > Theft protection to review the theft-related features available on your device. This is a related area, not a duplicate of the Advanced Protection page; some features may already be enabled by default. A screen lock is required. Availability varies by Android version, model, and device type, and Google’s documented feature set excludes tablets, wearables, and Android Go devices. See Google’s theft-protection guide.

Keep device and Google Account protection distinct
Android Device protection is a device setting. The Google Account Advanced Protection Program is a separate enrollment that adds safeguards to your account, including restrictions on apps accessing account data and more demanding account recovery. Do not assume turning on one enrolls you in the other.
For an account enrolled in the program, Google says Android runs Play Protect scanning and blocks most app installations from outside the Play Store, with ADB and preinstalled app stores as exceptions. Already-installed non-Play apps are not removed. Account enrollment can use passkeys or security keys; stronger account controls can also mean more friction when signing in or recovering access. Read Google’s Android guidance for Account Advanced Protection and its Advanced Protection Program overview before deciding whether to enroll.
