If you want most calls to stop interrupting you while selected people can still reach you, set up Do Not Disturb or Focus and allow those contacts. This silences or filters notifications; it does not make your number unreachable to the cellular network. The steps below cover iPhone and Android.
What “unreachable” means here
Focus and Do Not Disturb manage interruptions on your phone. A caller may still be able to call, but your device can silence the alert, show the call later, or route it to voicemail depending on the feature. The official instructions below describe notification and call handling—not disconnecting your phone from the mobile network.

On iPhone: allow selected people in Focus
- Open Settings > Focus and choose a mode such as Do Not Disturb.
- Tap People or Choose People.
- Select Allow Notifications From, then add the contacts you want to be able to interrupt you.
- Review the call options in that Focus. Apple lets you configure exceptions for certain groups and for repeated calls. The documented repeated-call exception applies when the same person calls two or more times within three minutes.
Focus can also be configured to silence selected people, with a separate option to decide whether calls from those people are allowed. For one especially important contact, you can enable Emergency Bypass in that person’s contact card under Ringtone or Text Tone; Apple says this can allow sounds and vibrations even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced. - Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Tap Notification filters > People.
- Choose which calls or messages to allow or block, then adjust repeat-caller handling if you want it.
Google documents an Allow repeat callers option for a second call from the same person within 15 minutes. The route above is Google’s documented path, but Android settings differ by device and version; some instructions require Android 14 or later. If the labels do not match, check your phone manufacturer’s help for its Do Not Disturb settings. Google describes Modes as a way to “silence your device and to manage when and how you want to be notified” in its Android guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb.

On iPhone: handle unknown callers separately
If the interruption is specifically from unsaved numbers, iPhone call screening offers a separate control from Focus. Depending on the selected option, the phone can ask a caller for more information before ringing, or silence calls from unsaved numbers and send them to voicemail while showing them in Recents. That setting is not a way to whitelist a chosen set of contacts through Focus. See Apple’s call-screening instructions.

If callers must hear that your line is unavailable
Do Not Disturb and Focus are suitable when you mean “don’t let most calls interrupt me.” They do not establish that callers will hear an unavailable message or that the phone is disconnected from cellular service. The cited Apple and Google instructions do not document a method that makes the line genuinely unreachable while still allowing chosen contacts’ calls through. For network-level call handling, consult your carrier’s instructions rather than assuming a silenced notification changes what callers hear.
