Your comfort is personal, so the best choice depends first on which style you can wear happily, then on noise control, battery life, and the Apple devices and features you need.
Which AirPods should you buy?
For most shoppers comparing Apple’s newer models, these are the three distinct starting points. This guide compares published specifications and claims; it does not report hands-on testing by Freedom251.

How do AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 3 differ?
Fit and noise control
The key difference is physical design: AirPods 4 with ANC sit open in the ear, while Pro 3 uses in-ear tips to create a sealed fit. The seal and the way either design feels are individual; specifications cannot predict which one will stay comfortable in your ears.

Apple says Pro 3 provides up to four times more active noise cancellation than the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC, based on testing under IEC 60268-24. That is Apple’s stated comparison, not an independent result or a promise that every listener will perceive four times the noise reduction. Battery and features
With ANC enabled, Apple lists up to 4 hours of listening per charge for AirPods 4 with ANC and up to 8 hours for Pro 3. Pro 3 is the model in this comparison associated with Apple’s hearing and heart-rate features, but availability and operation can depend on supported devices, software, language, and region. That makes Pro 3 the more feature-oriented earbud choice on paper; it does not establish that every feature will work with your setup.

When should you choose AirPods Max 2?
Choose Max 2 if you specifically want over-ear headphones rather than earbuds. Its listed maximum is up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled. Apple says Max 2 has up to 1.5 times more ANC than the previous generation, tested under IEC 60268-24; this is Apple’s claim against that baseline, not a direct comparison with Pro 3. Will AirPods features work with your devices?
Basic Bluetooth use with a non-Apple device is possible, but some functions may be limited. Apple’s comparison notes that advanced features can depend on the specific model, compatible device and operating-system version, current firmware, region, or language. Check the requirements for the feature you care about against your own devices before buying; the model name alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Hearing features need particular care. Apple describes Hearing Aid as intended for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, subject to age, device, regional, and language limits. Apple also warns that Hearing Protection is not suitable for some extremely loud impulse sounds, sustained sound above 110 dBA, or every workplace. Do not treat AirPods as a replacement for properly selected occupational hearing protection.

Water and sweat resistance
Apple lists IP57 for Pro 3 and IP54 for AirPods 4 variants. These ratings do not mean waterproof: Apple says resistance is not permanent, the products are intended for non-water sports and exercise, and wet devices should not be charged. Check the rating for the exact model rather than assuming it applies across the range.
Environmental information for Pro 3
In its September 9, 2025 environmental report for AirPods Pro 3, Apple estimates a 13 kg CO2e footprint for the assessed US configuration and reports 40% recycled content and 40% of manufacturing electricity sourced from renewable-energy projects. These are Apple’s reported figures; the footprint is a modeled life-cycle estimate that relies partly on industry averages and assumptions, not a universal measured value.
