Which AI voice models can connect to a phone line?
Of the two platforms identified in the available official documentation, OpenAI documents the clearest direct phone-call transport: SIP. That does not mean the model itself provides phone service. A telephony provider supplies the number and SIP trunk, and the application manages call handling and the model session.

Google’s Gemini Live API is documented as a real-time WebSocket interface, with Voximplant listed as an integration for connecting calls. That is evidence of a partner route to telephony, not documentation of a Google-provided phone number or a direct SIP endpoint. The sources do not identify the third model implied by the title, so an exclusive claim across all three would be unsupported.
How OpenAI’s documented phone-call path works
OpenAI’s Realtime API telephony guide describes two approaches: connect through SIP, or build a server-side audio bridge. OpenAI’s broader Realtime API guide lists telephony/SIP alongside WebRTC and WebSockets as connection choices, and links to integrations including Twilio, Telnyx, and Daily/Pipecat. What Google documents for Gemini Live
Gemini Live API provides a real-time, bidirectional interface over stateful WebSockets. These establish live audio transport, but WebSocket access is not itself a phone line or public telephone network connection. Google’s overview lists integrations and describes Voximplant as connecting inbound and outbound calls to Live API. This is a documented integration path. The practical distinction is ownership: the model API handles the AI session and its audio exchange; the telephony provider or integration handles the connection to phone service. A partner listing can make a phone workflow possible without making the model API itself a native telephone endpoint.
Does ChatGPT voice connect to a phone number?
OpenAI’s consumer Help Center describes voice as a feature in ChatGPT app experiences. It is not documentation for connecting a public phone number to the Realtime API. Can you conclude that only one of three models has a phone path?
Not from these sources alone. They support a comparison between OpenAI Realtime and Gemini Live, but do not identify the third model or establish its current telephony documentation. OpenAI explicitly documents SIP and provider-based phone setup; Google documents WebSocket access and a listed telephony integration. That supports a narrower conclusion about these two platforms, not the title’s full three-model exclusivity.
Before comparing a third model, establish its exact name and check its current official API documentation for phone-network transport, provider prerequisites, supported inbound or outbound calls, and whether a named route is native or partner-provided.
