At a concert, that might mean visuals layered over performers; in sports, it could mean contextual information or interactive elements. The experience may appear on a capable phone or a head-mounted display, and its success depends on more than the visual effect: tracking, timing, audience access and accessibility all matter.
What is augmented reality for live events?
AR combines a view of the physical world with virtual elements shown through a display device. In the live-event context, the physical venue and performance remain part of the view while digital content is added to it. ITU-T Recommendation H.430.11 discusses AR as part of immersive live experiences, including mobility, collaboration and interactivity.

AR is not the same as virtual reality (VR), which typically presents a computer-generated environment in place of the viewer’s surroundings. Nor is a live recording automatically AR because it uses immersive video. For example, Apple’s Metallica capture presentation concerns Apple Immersive Video: it offers useful production context about venue access, stage mapping, camera placement and performer movement, but it is not evidence of an AR implementation.
How is AR used in concerts and sports?
Concerts and performances
At a music performance, synchronized digital imagery can be layered into the view of the performers and stage. This can make virtual elements feel integrated with the scene rather than like graphics floating independently on a screen. Whether that illusion works depends partly on spatial understanding: the system needs to represent depth well enough for digital objects to appear in the right relation to performers and scenery.

A project described by ACM SIGGRAPH illustrates the challenge. In an interview published March 20, 2025, project contributors Christian Sandor and Dávid Maruscsák said their Canon head-mounted display did not provide a depth map they needed to mask a drummer in real time, so AR visuals could be properly occluded behind him. Occlusion is the visual ordering that makes one object appear in front of another; when it is wrong, virtual content may look pasted over the scene rather than situated within it.
Sports and other live experiences
Sports AR may place information or interactive elements in context with the event. ITU’s immersive-live-experience framework also discusses telepresence, remote operation and remote assistance. Those are live-experience applications, but they should not all be presented as entertainment overlays for spectators: some serve operational or collaborative purposes.

What equipment and planning can an event team need?
The audience’s display is only one part of an AR setup. ITU’s technical work identifies considerations such as real-time object extraction, spatial sensing, media transport, presentation equipment, and synchronization with video, sound and lighting. The exact design depends on the experience; not every installation needs the same architecture.
Before choosing a format, an event team can define the audience experience and its fallback:

- Display: Decide whether people will use capable phones, head-mounted displays or venue-based displays. Each option changes access, comfort and production requirements.
- Content and tracking: Specify what digital elements appear and how the system locates or anchors them in relation to the venue and performers.
- Show synchronization: Establish how AR content will stay in time with the event’s video, sound or lighting cues.
- Failure behavior: Plan what audiences see if tracking or connectivity becomes unreliable, so the experience does not depend on a perfect technical feed.
- Audience access: If the experience relies on phones, check device capability and provide a useful way to enjoy the event for people who cannot or choose not to use AR.
Apple’s developer guidance advises offering AR features only on capable devices. That makes device support part of audience planning, not simply a software detail.
What are the trade-offs and accessibility considerations?
AR can add information or visual spectacle while leaving the physical performance in view. It does not guarantee stronger engagement: graphics that arrive at the wrong moment, awkward device use or unreliable tracking can distract from the event instead.

Comfort and hardware limitations also vary by setup. In the March 2025 SIGGRAPH interview, the project contributors said AR glasses were not yet comfortable for extended wear at a reasonable price. That is their dated observation about the project context, not a universal or current comparison of every AR device.
Accessibility should be part of the design brief. ITU identifies the needs of disabled people, older people and foreign visitors as considerations for immersive live experiences. A useful adjacent example—not AR—is Field of Vision’s tactile sports product for visually impaired fans. The provider stated it had reached “300+ Fans,” “23 Venues” and “7 Sports” on a page accessed in 2026. Those are provider-reported deployment figures, not independently audited outcomes or measures of AR adoption.

How should you compare live-event AR formats?
There is no single best display format for every event. Compare approaches against the needs of the audience, the show and the venue rather than assuming a headset or phone is automatically preferable.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Audience reach and device access | Can attendees use the required device, and what experience is available to people who cannot or do not use AR? |
| Comfort and attention | Can people comfortably use the display while watching the event, and will it obstruct or distract from the performance? |
| Tracking and occlusion | How accurately must the system understand the stage or playing area, and what happens when virtual content should appear behind a performer or object? |
| Setup and synchronization | What sensing, content processing, media delivery and coordination with the show are needed? |
| Accessibility alternatives | How can the event remain useful and welcoming for people who cannot use the AR feature? |
These are relevant engineering and design axes, not a current product-by-product comparison. The available evidence does not establish headset rankings, costs or a universally suitable device.
