There is no universal winner in AI workflow automation: the right choice depends on the workflow’s run volume, billable steps or modules, connector requirements, and who will maintain it. Consider Zapier for a managed no-code path, Make for visual scenario building with credit-based usage, and n8n when execution-based billing, custom logic, or self-hosting matter—and your team can take on the technical ownership.
How do n8n, Zapier, and Make differ?
The key practical difference is how each platform counts work. n8n counts a complete workflow execution, Zapier meters tasks, and Make uses credits as modules process data. A workflow with many steps, records, or AI calls can therefore consume very different amounts under each system.

| Platform | Metering unit | Builder and deployment fit |
|---|---|---|
| n8n | Workflow executions; its pricing page says billing is based on monthly executions regardless of complexity. n8n pricing | Low-code with code steps, APIs, custom nodes, and a self-hosted option. Cloud avoids much of the infrastructure work; self-hosting leaves operations to you. n8n comparison |
| Zapier | Tasks tied to successful actions, with some action types consuming more than one task and certain built-in steps listed as zero-task. Zapier task rates | Managed, no-code approach. Check that the specific app trigger and actions your workflow needs are available on your plan. Zapier pricing |
| Make | Credits consumed as modules run; most modules use one credit, while some modules and built-in AI features use more. Make comparison and pricing | Visual, drag-and-drop Scenario Builder; Make describes its service as cloud-first. Make comparison and pricing |
These are vendor-described features and billing rules, not results from an independent usability or performance test. Integration counts are also vendor-reported and may not use comparable definitions: Zapier describes 8,000+ integrations, while n8n describes 1,000+ and also supports generic API connections and custom nodes. Verify the exact trigger, action, limits, and plan access your workflow needs rather than choosing by headline count. Zapier task rates · n8n comparison

Choose Zapier for a managed no-code route
Zapier is worth considering when you want a managed builder and the app connector supports the events and actions you need. Its plan page describes unlimited Zaps and app integrations, but task allowances and access to specific apps or features depend on the plan. Zapier pricing
#1 Best Overall
Zapier lists Formatter, Paths, Filters, Delay, Looping, Sub-Zaps, Digests, Zapier Manager, Storage, Tables, and Forms as zero-task steps. Successful standard app action steps generally use one task, but some action types use more; calculate from the rate rules for your exact workflow rather than assuming every step costs one task. Choose Make for visual scenario building
Make foregrounds its visual Scenario Builder, which may suit people who prefer to map a process as connected modules. Its comparison page describes Make Grid, a visual map of connected scenarios, as a paid-plan feature. These are Make’s descriptions, not independent findings about ease of use or scalability. Credit use depends on which modules and data bundles a scenario processes, and AI features may consume more than one credit. Estimate with the modules and volumes in your real scenario, not just the number of scenarios you create. Make comparison and pricing

Choose n8n for execution-based pricing, custom logic, or self-hosting
n8n may suit a team that wants to count complete workflow runs rather than each successful action or module, or that needs code steps, API connections, webhooks, branching, merging, or custom nodes. Its comparison page also describes connections to AI and large language models, including local models via Ollama. n8n comparison
Self-hosting gives the operator responsibility for infrastructure, installation, security measures, updates, and maintenance. n8n Cloud avoids much of that technical setup. The no-cost Community Edition should not be mistaken for a zero-total-cost deployment: server resources, backups, monitoring, security work, and staff time still count. n8n comparison
How do the plans and prices compare?
The following figures are the vendors’ listed amounts on the cited pages, accessed in 2026. They are not a like-for-like cost ranking: billing units differ, and plan interfaces, prices, billing periods, and availability can vary. Check the live page for your region and selected billing period before deciding.

| Platform and plan | Listed allowance and price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| n8n Starter | 2,500 workflow executions per month; €20/month | Billed annually. n8n pricing |
| n8n Pro | 10,000 workflow executions per month; €50/month | Billed annually. n8n pricing |
| n8n Business | 40,000 workflow executions per month; €667/month | Billed annually; plan card labels it self-hosted only. Enterprise pricing is custom. n8n pricing |
| Zapier Free | 100 tasks per month | Current listed free-tier allowance; plan access may depend on task-tier selection and interface. Zapier pricing |
| Zapier Pro example | $19.99/month | Indexed annual example on the current pricing page; verify the live plan and task tier. Zapier pricing |
| Make Free | 1,000 credits per month | Listed on Make’s comparison page accessed in 2026. Make comparison and pricing |
| Make Core | Starts at $9/month for 10,000 credits per month | Verify billing period and regional price on the live page. Make lists Pro at $16 and Team at $29; the page does not establish a comparable included credit amount for those plans here. Enterprise pricing is custom. Make comparison and pricing |
n8n’s pricing page states: “Pricing based on monthly workflow executions, regardless of complexity.” That makes execution count a useful starting point for an n8n estimate, but it does not make the listed plan totals directly comparable with Zapier tasks or Make credits. n8n pricing

How should you estimate the cost of your workflow?
- Describe one representative workflow. Count how often it starts in a month, the successful app actions it performs, the records or loop iterations it processes, and any AI or tool calls.
- Translate that workload into each platform’s unit. Count complete workflow executions for n8n; apply Zapier’s successful-task rules and any applicable AI tier multiplier; estimate Make credits from the modules, data bundles, and AI features involved.
- Compare the result with a real plan. Include the monthly allowance, overage or pay-as-you-go rules if applicable, and any annual billing commitment. Confirm limits and plan gates on the current vendor pages.
- Add operational costs where relevant. For self-hosted n8n, include server resources, monitoring, backups, security updates, and staff time alongside any license or plan cost.
This method is more useful than comparing entry prices alone. A workflow with many successful app actions may use tasks differently from one with the same number of runs but few actions; a Make scenario’s modules and AI features affect credits, while n8n counts the full run regardless of its number of steps. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do AI features affect billing and control?
Evaluate AI capability separately from AI cost. A platform’s agent or model features do not establish how reliably an AI workflow will perform in your production environment; verify available models, tool use, testing and debugging options, and where a person can review or approve an action.

Zapier’s help article, updated October 1, 2026, lists task multipliers for AI by Zapier: Standard is 1x, Advanced is 3x, and Premium is 5x. Successful AI tool calls consume tasks according to the selected tier, so an AI workflow’s task estimate should account for both the tier and the number of successful calls. Zapier AI task billing
Make says some built-in AI features consume more than one credit. n8n describes AI and LLM connections, including local models, but feature availability alone does not establish the cost or reliability of a particular model-and-workflow combination. Make comparison and pricing · n8n comparison
What should you check before putting a workflow into production?
- Exact connector behavior: confirm the required trigger and actions, including any app or plan limitations. An integration listing does not guarantee the event or operation you need.
- Failure handling: check how the workflow surfaces errors, retries work, and lets you inspect or replay failed runs. The vendor feature descriptions cited here do not establish a neutral ranking of these capabilities.
- Human review for AI actions: decide which outputs need approval before they can send messages, alter records, or trigger downstream work.
- Data and access governance: review current contractual controls and the specific security requirements of your organization. n8n’s pricing page lists SSO/LDAP on Business and external secret-store integration on Enterprise; verify current feature gates. The available vendor descriptions do not support a complete independent compliance ranking of all three products. n8n pricing
- Ownership and maintenance: choose who will monitor, update, and troubleshoot workflows. With self-hosted n8n, infrastructure and security operations sit with the operator; managed cloud services reduce that operational burden but do not remove the need to own the workflow itself. n8n comparison
Which should you choose?
Start with the workflow you need to run, not the platform’s headline price or integration count. Zapier is a practical candidate when its app actions fit and you favor a managed no-code approach; Make when visual scenario building and credit-based billing fit the workload; n8n when execution-based billing, custom logic, or self-hosting is important and you can support the technical responsibilities. These are fit recommendations based on vendor-described features and billing rules, not a measured ranking.
