Download 7-Zip for Windows 10 from the official 7-Zip download page, then choose the installer that matches your Windows processor architecture. The project lists EXE installers for x64, x86, and ARM64, and recommends EXE rather than the MSI alternative. 7-Zip is free, and its homepage says it works in Windows 10.

Which 7-Zip download should you choose?

Choose based on the architecture of Windows on your computer, not just the processor brand. The official 7-Zip homepage displayed version 26.04, dated 2026-10-05, when checked on 2026-10-07. Its version listing can change, so use the live download catalogue to confirm the available release.

Installer label Choose it for Page-listed size for version 26.04
Windows x64 EXE 64-bit Windows for Intel- or AMD-compatible PCs 1.6 MB
Windows x86 EXE 32-bit Windows 1.3 MB
Windows ARM64 EXE Windows running on an ARM-based device 1.5 MB

These sizes are those shown on the 7-Zip homepage for that release, not independent measurements. The official catalogue also lists MSI packages for x64 and x86, but recommends the EXE type. MSI is an alternative installer package; the source does not describe it as unsafe or broken.

Check your Windows architecture before downloading

If you are unsure whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, check Windows system information rather than guessing. The 7-Zip support page specifically tells users with 64-bit Windows x64 to check that they have the x64 build. Its official pages list ARM64 separately, so use that build for Windows on ARM.

How to download and install 7-Zip

  1. Open the official 7-Zip download page.
  2. Find the Windows installer matching your architecture: x64, x86, or ARM64. The project recommends the EXE package.
  3. Select that official download and save the installer. Avoid third-party download sites when the project provides the installer directly.
  4. Open the downloaded EXE and follow the installer prompts. The official source does not document the current dialog labels, so the exact screens may vary by release.

The 7-Zip homepage says the program works in Windows 10. That is the vendor’s compatibility statement; it does not establish compatibility with every possible Windows 10 configuration.

Is 7-Zip free, and what can it do?

Yes. The 7-Zip FAQ says it is free software and that users do not need to register or pay, including for use on a computer in a commercial organization. The homepage describes it as open-source software; most code is under GNU LGPL, some parts under BSD 3-clause, and some parts have an unRAR license restriction.

7-Zip can create and extract 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and WIM archives. The official format list also includes formats it can unpack but not create, including RAR. In other words, it can extract RAR files, but it does not create RAR archives. The homepage lists AES-256 encryption support for 7z and ZIP formats.

What Windows 10 support ending means for 7-Zip

Microsoft says Windows 10 version 22H2 and Home and Pro editions reached end of support on 2025-10-14. Those editions no longer receive security updates after that date, subject to separate lifecycle terms for exceptions such as LTSC editions. This is an operating-system security and servicing issue; it does not mean 7-Zip stopped working or became incompatible on that date. The 7-Zip homepage separately says the application works in Windows 10.

Troubleshoot common archive problems

Windows says the archive is invalid

A failed extraction does not necessarily mean 7-Zip was installed incorrectly. The 7-Zip FAQ notes that some ZIP files have incorrect headers or use unsupported methods. If the archive is invalid, the FAQ advises contacting the program that created it.

Files appear through a temporary folder during drag-and-drop

According to the 7-Zip FAQ, dragging files from 7-Zip into Windows Explorer uses temporary files because Explorer needs decompressed files on disk. To avoid that behavior, use 7-Zip’s Extract command or drag files from one 7-Zip window to another.
