Proton VPN is most compelling if you want a privacy-focused VPN with a genuinely usable free plan, or you need paid features such as broader location choice, streaming support, or P2P servers. The headline US offer—$2.99 a month on a two-year term—means $71.76 paid upfront before tax, and the stated renewal is $83.88 for the next 12 months. Those are US checkout figures captured on October 7, 2026, not universal prices. Proton documents its features and policies, but speed, streaming performance, leak resistance, and ease of use have not been independently tested here.
What does Proton VPN cost, including renewal?
The relevant figure is the full payment and what follows it, not just the monthly equivalent in the offer headline. Proton VPN’s US-dollar VPN Plus checkout showed these terms on October 7, 2026; prices are before tax.

| Term | Checkout price | Monthly equivalent | Renewal shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $9.99 per month | $9.99 | |
| 12 months | $47.88 total | $3.99 | |
| 24 months | $71.76 total | $2.99 | $83.88 for 12 months |
The checkout described the two-year price as 70% off its stated $9.99 monthly price and offered a 30-day money-back guarantee. The $2.99 equivalent applies to the introductory 24-month term; the stated next charge is $83.88 for 12 months, before tax. Proton says renewal prices can change. Local currency and taxes can also change the amount charged. Check Proton VPN’s pricing and checkout before committing. [c002]

Is Proton VPN Free enough, or should you pay?
Proton says its Free plan has no time, speed, or data limits and uses the same security level and no-logs policy as paid plans. It allows one connected device at a time. Location choice is more limited than on paid plans, and streaming access is not guaranteed. For general browsing, that may be sufficient; paying makes more sense when you need a particular location, more simultaneous connections, or the paid plan’s specific capabilities. Proton’s plan comparison sets out the plan differences. [c001] [c005]

Proton Unlimited bundles additional paid Proton services; consider it only if those bundled services matter to you. The checkout figures above apply to VPN Plus, not every Proton plan. Which plan lets me use streaming services with Proton VPN?
Proton says streaming services are supported on paid plans, while its Free plan does not guarantee streaming access. That is a plan-level statement, not a guarantee that a particular platform, title, or regional catalog will work at a given time. Streaming services can change their VPN detection, and no platform or region was tested here. Check Proton’s plan comparison for its current terms. [c005]

How can I use BitTorrent on Proton VPN?
Proton says P2P-optimized servers are available on paid plans and are identified in the app with a two-way-arrow icon. While connected, Proton says peers see the VPN server’s IP address rather than your real IP. Use P2P only for lawful activity; a VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful. See Proton’s P2P guidance for its instructions and terms. [c005]

Does Proton VPN keep logs?
Proton says it does not log websites visited, traffic or communications content, IP addresses, session lengths, or location-based information. It does retain account information, so “no logs” should not be read as “no data of any kind.” Proton says its apps are open source and independently audited, and identifies Securitum as an auditor in its no-logs information. These are the company’s documented policy and audit claims; no current audit report or logging behavior was independently examined here. Proton’s no-logs information explains its position. [c003]

What this review can—and cannot—establish
The price and feature descriptions above come from Proton’s published pages and checkout terms. No independent speed or latency measurements, leak tests, streaming checks, congestion observations, or usability tests were conducted. In particular, Proton’s “up to 400%” VPN Accelerator claim is not a substitute for a measured result. A performance verdict would require reproducible tests specifying the device, operating system, baseline connection, locations, protocol, test period, and streaming services and regions checked.
