If you want a hiking pack listed at exactly 32 L, the Osprey Hikelite 32 is the clearest match in the available product specifications. It is listed at 2.28 lb (1.03 kg), with an adjustable torso, a suspended-mesh backpanel and an included raincover. That makes it a candidate to investigate—not a proven overall winner: these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The 33 L Osprey Talon 33 and 30 L Gregory Zulu 30 are nearby-capacity alternatives with different carrying and access features.
How the three packs compare
Capacity is only one part of the choice. Weight, intended load, fit, backpanel design and access can matter more once you pack the bag. The figures below come from product pages for different regional markets and, for the Zulu, different sizes. Confirm the exact model, size and regional listing before buying.

Choose the Hikelite 32 if exact capacity and a simple hiking layout matter
Among these options, the Hikelite is the only one listed at exactly 32 L. Its top-loading compartment and stretch side pockets suit a conventional hiking-pack layout, while the included raincover is a practical feature for wet conditions. Its listed 5–25 lb load range gives you a reference for the pack’s intended load, not a guarantee that a particular load will feel comfortable on your body.

The Talon is one liter larger than the target capacity and has a higher listed load range than the Hikelite. Osprey identifies it for light overnights and demanding day trips. That stated intended use makes it the most explicit option here for those outings, but it is heavier by the listed specifications and its dimensions are not a guarantee of airline acceptance.

Look at the Zulu 30 if you want a framed pack with panel access
The Zulu is the smallest of the three, but its internal frame, suspended mesh and top/panel access distinguish it from a basic top-loader. REI gives separate weights and torso ranges for S/M and M/L, so compare the size that fits you rather than treating the pack as one uniform specification.
How to judge fit and carrying comfort
A volume label cannot tell you whether a backpack will sit correctly on your torso or transfer weight comfortably to your hips. Measure your torso and check hipbelt sizing against the maker’s chart. Gregory’s pack fit guide advises trying a pack loaded with at least 10–20 lb; this is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comfort test.

- Try the size that matches your torso measurement, and adjust the harness and hipbelt according to the maker’s instructions.
- Load the pack with representative gear or weight when trying it on, rather than judging an empty bag.
- Walk, bend and move as you would on a hike. Check whether the hipbelt and shoulder straps stay positioned as you move.
- Consider the backpanel design in light of your priorities: suspended mesh is intended to allow airflow, while a closer-contouring carry system may appeal if you prioritize stability or freedom of movement. Neither feature guarantees a particular comfort outcome.
Will a 32 L hiking backpack work for travel?
A pack in the 30–33 L range can be useful for travel as well as hiking, but usable space depends on the shape and bulk of your belongings. REI’s 2026 category guide describes 21–35 L as a hiking-and-travel “sweet spot” and says packs in that range may be small enough for overhead bins. That broad guidance is not approval for any particular bag on any particular flight.

Check whether the carrier’s limit applies to carry-on or personal items, and whether it includes external pockets or protruding straps. A stated pack dimension is a manufacturer measurement, not an airline compliance determination. The Hikelite’s published dimensions are 58 × 32 × 32 cm; the Talon’s are 68 × 30 × 31 cm. Confirm the relevant limits directly with the airline because rules and enforcement can differ.

How much can you fit, and for how long?
A 30–33 L pack may work for a large day hike or a light overnight, depending on equipment bulk, season and what you carry. There is no universal trip-duration rule established by capacity alone. Osprey specifically describes the Talon 33 for light overnights and demanding day trips; do not assume that the same duration applies to every pack or every traveler.
For a travel trip lasting several days, the important question is whether your clothing and essentials fit within the pack’s actual usable space while leaving room for anything you need to access quickly. Bulky footwear, cold-weather layers and specialized hiking equipment can use space quickly. If possible, pack your real kit before relying on a volume figure.
