Then use Samsung Members to test the buttons and Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app may be involved. Samsung does not identify one universal cause for this symptom; the steps below help narrow it down without assuming the key or an app is at fault.
What can make a Samsung device’s volume rise by itself?
A volume-up key that is being pressed, caught, or mechanically triggered can make the volume rise. A temporary software issue, device settings, or a hardware problem can also affect how buttons work. Samsung lists these as possible button-related issues, but they do not establish the cause on any one device. The exact Galaxy model and software version can affect menu wording and troubleshooting steps.

Start with the checks that can identify accidental pressure, then test the buttons and software. Samsung’s button troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for a case, dust, or other foreign material that may prevent buttons from working properly.
Check the case and volume key first
- Remove the case or cover. Check whether its edge is pressing against the volume-up key. Samsung also advises checking for accidental button presses and removing third-party covers in its guidance about unexpected screen wake; that article addresses screen wake, not volume changes specifically.
- Inspect the key. With the case off, see whether the volume-up key feels held down, catches, or fails to move normally. Look for visible dust or other material around it.
- Do not probe the button. Avoid inserting sharp objects or applying liquids around the key. If it remains depressed or appears damaged, arrange service rather than trying to force it free.
- Observe whether the symptom stops. If the volume no longer rises after removing the cover, the cover may have been pressing the key. If it continues, proceed with diagnostics.
Run a Samsung Members button diagnostic
Samsung Members can test the device’s buttons. On supported devices, open Samsung Members, tap Support, choose Get started under Phone diagnostics, select Buttons, and follow the prompts. Samsung says you can stop the scan and select individual tests instead.

Check for software or app involvement
Install available software updates
Samsung notes that outdated software can affect device performance or button functionality. Check for and install available system updates using the update controls on your Galaxy. The precise menu path can vary by model and software version; consult your device’s settings or Samsung’s model-specific support instructions if the labels differ.

Test in Safe mode
Safe mode runs the phone without third-party apps, which helps determine whether a downloaded app may be involved. On supported current Galaxy software, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode. Samsung’s Safe mode instructions note that the steps can vary by device.

Think about apps installed or updated shortly before the symptom began. Samsung recommends removing recent suspect apps one at a time and checking whether the behavior changes. Safe mode points toward app involvement but does not identify which app is responsible.
- If the volume still rises in Safe mode: The symptom is not resolved by disabling third-party apps. That does not, by itself, prove hardware failure; check the button diagnostic and key condition, then consider the settings reset or service steps below.
When to reset settings or seek service
Reset all settings if diagnostics find no hardware issue
Samsung says resetting all settings may help when Samsung Members does not detect a hardware issue. This is different from a factory reset: Samsung states that resetting all settings does not delete personal data. The menu wording and location can vary by model, so confirm the option on your device before proceeding. Do not select a factory reset as though it were the same action.

Contact Samsung or a repair provider for a stuck or faulty key
Arrange service if the volume-up key stays depressed, is visibly damaged, fails the button test, or the volume continues to change and the button does not work properly. Samsung’s audio troubleshooting guidance states that service is required if volume buttons appear stuck or do not work. That page discusses wired-headphone audio, so its service advice applies here specifically to a stuck or nonworking volume button, not as proof that a headphone connection causes the volume to rise.
When contacting support, have the Galaxy model and software version available and describe whether the behavior occurs with the phone speaker, headphones, or Bluetooth audio. This helps support assess the right device-specific next step.
